is "chopper in the car" called something different than "chopper in the car"??

bene_gesserit, Saturday, 10 December 2011 20:05 (twelve years ago) link

ok i guess it's "john" and it's my pick.

and "marvin's room" is the song about drunk-dialing your ex - people like this song as more than a novelty for real?

(i spend 95% of my time in the car listening to urban rap radio so i am familiar with these songs in some capacity but they never say the titles /also didn't realize drake was on 75% of them.)

bene_gesserit, Saturday, 10 December 2011 20:29 (twelve years ago) link

"Marvin's Room" love is the weirdest of all to me, because even if you don't like Drake as a person, even if you don't like Drake as a rapper, at least he's made some pop songs qua pop songs & "Marvin's Room" is a meandering, directionless sexless slow jam

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Saturday, 10 December 2011 21:05 (twelve years ago) link

i mean it is kind of a hilarious song because it's all serious and dark but it's about drunk dialing someone and telling them you are sleeping with a bunch of other women!

bene_gesserit, Saturday, 10 December 2011 21:24 (twelve years ago) link

I'VE HAD SEX FOUR TIMES THIS WEEK I'LL EXPLAIN
HAVING A HARD TIME ADJUST TO FAME

dayo, Sunday, 11 December 2011 01:58 (twelve years ago) link

marvins room is my fav drake song

wil smif, Sunday, 11 December 2011 07:08 (twelve years ago) link

in spite of the awkward lines his performance is def moving--not in that it inspires sympathy or pity but, like, i can relate to being in that pathetic position and it really hits that nerve. captures the vibe of being bummed out & reaching out perfectly; the beat sounds like the bathroom of a club, the way the keys seep through and the volume increases in hesitant bursts. the phone call is pretty devastating

i mean presumably he's calling someone he's, like, in love with; kind of serious imo

some dude feel like it's my duty to inform you that your dn is biting the rev

am0n shumpert (dayo), Monday, 12 December 2011 01:56 (twelve years ago) link

ok my bad but i should do you a favor and post under the dn to which you're referring in this actual thread before i change it so people aren't totally confused

skrillex pretend (Mr. Stevenson #2), Monday, 12 December 2011 02:06 (twelve years ago) link

"sounds like the bathroom of a club" is the new "watching a party ending through smoke"

Mr. Stevenson #2, Monday, 12 December 2011 02:06 (twelve years ago) link

haha well I just posted in the thread most likely to get your attention xp

am0n shumpert (dayo), Monday, 12 December 2011 02:09 (twelve years ago) link

ha, thank you some dude, i was confused myself.

malcolm the tenth (furnace mane), Monday, 12 December 2011 02:35 (twelve years ago) link

gucc_ebooks (tpp), Thursday, 15 December 2011 16:10 (twelve years ago) link

i <3 "roll up"

v-shasty, Thursday, 15 December 2011 16:12 (twelve years ago) link

the chorus of "roll up" is like the most rhythmically incompetent vocal performance of 2011

some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Thursday, 15 December 2011 17:09 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i could see that -- idk i love the production on that

I'm sorry, I thought you had heard the Childish Gambino album

OH NOES, Thursday, 15 December 2011 17:40 (twelve years ago) link

this song is terrible!

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Thursday, 15 December 2011 17:53 (twelve years ago) link

i feel so sorry for people who live nowhere near DC that they have to hear Wale on the radio all the time now too

some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Thursday, 15 December 2011 17:55 (twelve years ago) link

like it's been our cross to bear for much longer but it's not my desire to spread the misery

some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Thursday, 15 December 2011 17:56 (twelve years ago) link

jesus christ how many of these songs are gigantic blousey sapfests

OH NOES, Thursday, 15 December 2011 18:01 (twelve years ago) link

and slooooooooooooooooooooooooow too

OH NOES, Thursday, 15 December 2011 18:05 (twelve years ago) link

now I am better understanding how/why ppl would be appreciating Waka

rolling gigantic blousey sapfests 2012

some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Thursday, 15 December 2011 18:07 (twelve years ago) link

yup i think we got our thread title goons

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Thursday, 15 December 2011 18:08 (twelve years ago) link

I mean, I'm going through in order and I am actually psyched/happy about hitting Lupe because at least it isn't a turgid dirge, to the point where I am tempted to give his album a chance despite the massive negative reaction I had to "The Show Goes On"

someone should put some Paxil in Weezy's weed

OH NOES, Thursday, 15 December 2011 18:10 (twelve years ago) link

haha that means the biggest blousy sapfest of all, "Marvins Room," is up next

some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Thursday, 15 December 2011 18:13 (twelve years ago) link

gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawd why won't he shut the fuck up

I don't care if this make me old, Drake is fucking terrible and should just be punched 24/7

OH NOES, Thursday, 15 December 2011 18:15 (twelve years ago) link

the Lupe Fiasco + Trey Songz joint is kind of a jam

www.myislamicdream.com (step hen faps), Thursday, 15 December 2011 18:16 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i fuck w/ that song

some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Thursday, 15 December 2011 18:18 (twelve years ago) link

kind of telling that a wholly anonymous generic track like "Racks" is coming across like the greatest thing in the universe thanks to exposure to stupid ass Drake

OH NOES, Thursday, 15 December 2011 18:18 (twelve years ago) link

okay "Bring It Back" is a genuinely YES song, the first I've hit on this list (of the ones I didn't already know) in a while

OH NOES, Thursday, 15 December 2011 18:20 (twelve years ago) link

^^^^^^^^i know right!

(ha this was an xp but it applies to both)

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Thursday, 15 December 2011 18:21 (twelve years ago) link

racks is a pretty unusual song, maybe not as unusual as tony montana but they're both ugly and rythmically contorted in a way most or all futuristic stupid fruity swag ever is

wil smif, Thursday, 15 December 2011 18:22 (twelve years ago) link

tpp's list otm

wil smif, Thursday, 15 December 2011 18:23 (twelve years ago) link

the big takeaway I'm having so far is that I didn't think that 90% of hip-hop would spend 2011 trying to unsuccessfully merge "I Need Love" with "Ms Jackson"

OH NOES, Thursday, 15 December 2011 18:23 (twelve years ago) link

haha

well considering that that style's been done to death for 3 years in a row there's not really anything unusual about that anymore

some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Thursday, 15 December 2011 18:25 (twelve years ago) link

srsly though, coming to Waka after the indefensible SHIT I just sat through makes me want to go back and apologize to you guys for all the mocking; if only I'd been paying attention to what the other choices were I'd have gotten it

OH NOES, Thursday, 15 December 2011 18:27 (twelve years ago) link

racks & tony montana are the increasingly rare late-era innovations on the futuristic swag template

wil smif, Thursday, 15 December 2011 18:30 (twelve years ago) link

haha "grove st. party" and "bring it back" are my top 2 out of this list so it's a pleasant surprise to see you embrace both (although i decided to throw a vote to "ima boss" itt)

some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Thursday, 15 December 2011 18:30 (twelve years ago) link

we got tons of wale in miami too cuz of the MMG thing

v-shasty, Thursday, 15 December 2011 18:36 (twelve years ago) link

no i mean the pre-"no hands"/maybach music years when D.C. radio was playing mostly awful wale songs nobody else cared about

some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Thursday, 15 December 2011 18:41 (twelve years ago) link

"that way" was obv huge everywhere
