So how do small market teams and Stern benefit if Chris Paul is not traded and leaves as a free agent at the end of the season?
― Another Suburbanite, Saturday, 10 December 2011 17:35 (twelve years ago) link
its not abt not trading paul, its abt that nola was getting completely hosed in that particular trade
― Cooper Chucklebutt, Saturday, 10 December 2011 17:39 (twelve years ago) link
in fact i wouldnt be surprised if he did get moved to the lakers w/a party than houston as the third team
― Cooper Chucklebutt, Saturday, 10 December 2011 17:40 (twelve years ago) link
what any team wants when they are forced to move a superstar and go into rebuilding mode is some combo of good young players, quality draft picks, and cap relief, they got none of those things!

stern has since confirmed that this was in fact his motivation for negging the trade
― Cooper Chucklebutt, Saturday, 10 December 2011 17:41 (twelve years ago) link
-also wanted to practice techniques he learned from reading the game

"Yes, we've been given autonomy to make another trade," Hornets general manager Dell Demps told reporters at a news conference Friday night.
― Cooper Chucklebutt, Saturday, 10 December 2011 18:19 (twelve years ago) link
lol
does no one understand what 'owning a team' means
i really don't want cp3 on the lakers guys :(
― k3vin k., Saturday, 10 December 2011 18:20 (twelve years ago) link
yeah me neither, i dont think theyre championship quality w/him sans odom and gasol tho so w/e lol, their top three players would all be major injury risks now too
― Cooper Chucklebutt, Saturday, 10 December 2011 18:21 (twelve years ago) link
they could be a dangerous playoff team if they're all healthy but i don't think this deal adds any wins to their regular season total
― k3vin k., Saturday, 10 December 2011 18:23 (twelve years ago) link
i sense a large kobe decline coming
― Cooper Chucklebutt, Saturday, 10 December 2011 18:23 (twelve years ago) link
nah unfortunately his decline will be gradual and extremely protracted
― k3vin k., Saturday, 10 December 2011 18:24 (twelve years ago) link
thats whats happened so far but gradual decline tends to turn into sudden decline
― Cooper Chucklebutt, Saturday, 10 December 2011 18:26 (twelve years ago) link
its weird that the lakers arent going after howard instead of cp3 btw imho
― Cooper Chucklebutt, Saturday, 10 December 2011 18:27 (twelve years ago) link
i don't understand what could be included in this trade to make it more palatable -- i mean, the lakers have no young players, unless you consider, uh, derrick caracter -- the rockets have a bunch of young players, some are interesting, maybe not good tho, and also if they're still giving up scola & martin, i'm not sure that they could or should give up much more
― v-shasty, Saturday, 10 December 2011 18:28 (twelve years ago) link
yeah me neither, im surprised they didnt try to use a diff third party
― Cooper Chucklebutt, Saturday, 10 December 2011 18:33 (twelve years ago) link
theyre prob just playing chicken w/stern hoping hell cave post public outrage
― Cooper Chucklebutt, Saturday, 10 December 2011 18:34 (twelve years ago) link
not really a guy i would count on taking kindly to that sort of behavior
don't really understand point guard + shooting guard combo
― dayo, Saturday, 10 December 2011 18:39 (twelve years ago) link
like, CP3 + dwight howard = rack 'em up. CP3 + kobe - how is CP3 gonna help create more scoring opportunities for Kobels?
― dayo, Saturday, 10 December 2011 18:40 (twelve years ago) link

In the details available to Yahoo! Sports, Paul goes the Lakers, Pau Gasol to the Rockets, and Houston still sends Kevin Martin, Luis Scola, and a 2012 first-round pick to the Hornets. The main changes in the deal, originally nixed by the NBA, will come between New Orleans and the Lakers, sources say.
i still dgi -- hollinger is speculating that it means bynum is getting flipped for okafor
― v-shasty, Saturday, 10 December 2011 19:00 (twelve years ago) link
CP3 + kobe - how is CP3 gonna help create more scoring opportunities for Kobels?
yeah, i think this is right. it creates for LAL the same type of potential redundancies that led to criticism of the wade/bron pairing, but -- for a lot of reasons (including age and health/durability) -- the latter has a lot more upside potential than the former. now if LA adds howard, that will help, but as i say, a lot depends on health and durability. and yeah, kobe may decline fast.
― Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 10 December 2011 19:00 (twelve years ago) link
wait, bynum for someone besides howard? i'm a little behind the news today.
― Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 10 December 2011 19:01 (twelve years ago) link
which means that the lakers would've traded their two best big men, absorbed the core of last year's 7th seed, and added a 33 year old kobe bryant
well done?
― v-shasty, Saturday, 10 December 2011 19:02 (twelve years ago) link
the bynum thing is just john hollinger's speculation as to how paul, gasol, scola and martin can still be involved in a deal that will be in any way significantly different than the nixed trade
odom stays in LA as part of this deal?
― Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 10 December 2011 19:04 (twelve years ago) link
so that would be odom -- WORLD PEACE -- bynum -- kobE -- CP3
ehhhhh . . . yeah, i guess.
― Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 10 December 2011 19:05 (twelve years ago) link
no, bynum would be leaving
― v-shasty, Saturday, 10 December 2011 19:05 (twelve years ago) link
the parameters of this deal are unclear to me. bynum leaving for anything less than howard has to be a big disappointment to LA, since they have nothing left to offer the magic, i assume.
― Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 10 December 2011 19:07 (twelve years ago) link
if the Magic lose howard they might as well just create animatronic fans to attend teh games

odom was sulking, last I heard
― Aimless, Saturday, 10 December 2011 19:08 (twelve years ago) link
he'll get over it
cuz he's sleeping w/ a Kardashian
well they would be getting back okafor, so in hollinger's theoretical deal their line up would look like
paul-bryant-world peace-odom-okafor
w/ no bench to speak of
― v-shasty, Saturday, 10 December 2011 19:08 (twelve years ago) link
again, this is just hollinger speculating on how the deal could go through and involve the hornets getting back a good, young player
― v-shasty, Saturday, 10 December 2011 19:09 (twelve years ago) link
honestly i think that the nets would trump whatever deal the lakers could put up if all they had to offer was bynum anyway
― v-shasty, Saturday, 10 December 2011 19:11 (twelve years ago) link
yeah. okafor's okay. he's no dwight howard, and he offers nothing that the magic would want for dwight howard.
that LAL lineup isn't too scary to me, especially with no bench.

he will! here's how: kobe bryant will say to him, "shut the f--k up, lamar odom."
― Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 10 December 2011 19:11 (twelve years ago) link
i'm pretty sure odom, who will continue to be paid millions of dollars to play basketball professionally in los angeles, will get over it
― v-shasty, Saturday, 10 December 2011 19:13 (twelve years ago) link
meanwhile, the hornets
jackmartinarizascolabynum
this is a playoff team
― v-shasty, Saturday, 10 December 2011 19:14 (twelve years ago) link
honestly tho, on the one hand the lakers would be crazy to send out gasol and bynum and get back anyone besides howard, but on the other, i don't see how this deal goes through otherwise. there's no one of consequence left to trade besides bynum.
― v-shasty, Saturday, 10 December 2011 19:15 (twelve years ago) link
The Lakers (read: Kupchak) seem to think that Kobe's knees can make it through the shortened season and maybe they can steal one last title before the major rebuilding phase starts.
