The trade would also have allowed Lakers coach Mike Brown to get creative. One of the things that instantly popped into my mind when I heard about the deal (before the NBA put the kibosh on it, that is) was the possibility of Paul and Bryant running the pick and roll together. Bryant rarely acts as the roll man; in fact, he did so only twice last season.
HOW CAN YOU POSSIBLY KNOW THIS GET SOME SLEEP
― k3vin k., Friday, 9 December 2011 21:46 (twelve years ago) link
looool
― dayo, Friday, 9 December 2011 21:47 (twelve years ago) link
i think synergy or some shit keeps track of that -- reading heat index pieces last year was all about haberstroh talking about how many times x player played y role in the p&r with z player -- whoever puts that stuff together REALLY gets no sleep
― v-shasty, Friday, 9 December 2011 21:47 (twelve years ago) link
ah ok haha

aw hollinger getting sentimental (free)
― k3vin k., Friday, 9 December 2011 22:53 (twelve years ago) link
so uh... the Nets tampered with Howard last week and might lose draft picks and the right to trade for him.
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 9 December 2011 23:01 (twelve years ago) link
also, Brandon Bass>>>>>Glen Davis, wtf Otis Smith
the contracts that are being handed out right now are so amazing. These fucking moron owners will never learn!
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 9 December 2011 23:02 (twelve years ago) link
need a lockout
― pandemic, Friday, 9 December 2011 23:03 (twelve years ago) link
somebody needs to save the owners from themselves

I love Nene and I've always said he's underrated. But maxing out Nene is ludicrous.
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 9 December 2011 23:05 (twelve years ago) link
agreed, agreed, agreed
― v-shasty, Friday, 9 December 2011 23:06 (twelve years ago) link
think it just speaks to the massive undersupply of talent in the NBA - if teams weren't desperate for big men or there were just fewer teams...
contraction
― dayo, Friday, 9 December 2011 23:08 (twelve years ago) link
thaddeus young for 5/42 for thaddeus young seems v reasonable tho, dude is a baller
― v-shasty, Friday, 9 December 2011 23:09 (twelve years ago) link
been in the league four years w/ a career PER of 16 and is only 22
like if you think you have a shot to win a chip or go deep in the playoffs but you need a big man, and the best guy out there is raef lafrentz, you're gonna max out raef lafrentz i guess
― dayo, Friday, 9 December 2011 23:09 (twelve years ago) link
I agree with that somewhat, but 99% of the time these deals are handed out by bad teams that are a mile away from contention (like the Nets with Nene).
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 9 December 2011 23:12 (twelve years ago) link
if the Rockets had maxed out nene after a Gasol deal I would have been down with that.
yeah nene is awesome but he better be no better than the third best player on your team if you want to make a run at something serious
― v-shasty, Friday, 9 December 2011 23:13 (twelve years ago) link
what is denver gonna do w/o nene and w/ 1/3 of their rotation the central plot of 'rush hour 4'
you shouldn't ever max out on a player like nene is the thing

I would just do a pu pu platter of 3rd tier fas I liked. No reason to overspend on anyone. Wait a year and then sign Wilson Chandler.
apparently they weren't really interested in bringing back JR or Kenyon anyway.
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 9 December 2011 23:21 (twelve years ago) link
Okay hollinger's already pretty much said my feelings for me above (thanks kev) but man brandon retiring is some sad shit especially because dude is like 4 years younger than me and could run unopposed for mayor in Portland. I'm happy he's not pushing himself into disability -- I'm happy medicine and reason exists to save athletes from that at all these days -- and if it puts the blazers in a place to sign a max guy next year well bravo. But man the shakes this franchise has gotten in the past few years. What's been just straight up sadder in prof sports?
tldr: ;_;
― clay, Friday, 9 December 2011 23:21 (twelve years ago) link
I have never seen anything remotely like Brandon Roy playing on those knees last year. It was shocking to see a player drag a leg around through multiple nba games like that.
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 9 December 2011 23:25 (twelve years ago) link
I vividly recall Roy taking a charge, and as he fell he kept his legs straight in the air because he didn't want to feel the pain of his legs hitting the the ground.
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 9 December 2011 23:26 (twelve years ago) link
And he's *27* I mean I just feel awful for him
― clay, Friday, 9 December 2011 23:27 (twelve years ago) link
yeah ;_;
― dayo, Friday, 9 December 2011 23:29 (twelve years ago) link
tbf it makes cosmic sense that pdx's team was young and amped to take the world and ended up just emo and retiring before 30
― clay, Friday, 9 December 2011 23:34 (twelve years ago) link
people spreading the (likely to be true eventually in the near future) rumors about Dwight leaving and everybody's already ganging up on him here in Orlando. it's like they don't remember the infamous Sentinel poll that alienated Shaq.
it's amazing that Orlando fans feel entitled to Dwight without actually, y'know, going to games or anything. even in success and with a new arena they have trouble selling out games.

did I or anybody else ever use the "B. Roy Will B. Roy" fantasy league team name last year?
― dayo, Friday, 9 December 2011 23:41 (twelve years ago) link
Jason Quick: Breaking: Blazers determine center Greg Oden has suffered setback, and restructure his one-year deal for a lesser amount about 5 minutes ago
― Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 10 December 2011 00:09 (twelve years ago) link
Since when can you restructure a qualifying offer?
― EZ Snappin, Saturday, 10 December 2011 00:12 (twelve years ago) link
yeah I don't get it
― Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 10 December 2011 00:13 (twelve years ago) link
maybe the setback is so horrible that oden and his agent feel like no one would sign him so they'll take whatever they can get.
― Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 10 December 2011 00:14 (twelve years ago) link
i.e. they're worried about the contract being voided due to a failed physical?
― Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 10 December 2011 00:15 (twelve years ago) link
Really Oden should just be retiring, this is absurd.
― Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 10 December 2011 00:16 (twelve years ago) link
What was I just saying abt this franchise and sadness
― clay, Saturday, 10 December 2011 00:18 (twelve years ago) link
If he's injured at the time of the signing, how can he fail his physical for being injured? I get if another team kicked the tires and said no thanks, but Portland has been managing his frailitude since he entered the league.
― EZ Snappin, Saturday, 10 December 2011 00:20 (twelve years ago) link
And a qualifying offer amount is decided by the league based on tenure and draft placement. It isn't negotiated in the first place.
― EZ Snappin, Saturday, 10 December 2011 00:21 (twelve years ago) link
david stern should just give chris paul to portland
― dayo, Saturday, 10 December 2011 00:21 (twelve years ago) link
― EZ Snappin, Friday, December 9, 2011 6:20 PM (1 minute ago) Bookmark Permalink
yeah I really don't understand. Maybe they examined him and there was a little window of time where they could have pulled the offer before he could officially sign it and they negotiated.
― Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 10 December 2011 00:23 (twelve years ago) link
so apparently the league has told the Hornets that they need to get younger players and draft picks to make a deal acceptable. Why not just get a 4th team involved who will give up picks/young players for scola/martin/odom?
― Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 10 December 2011 00:28 (twelve years ago) link
"Following Greg's most recent physical examination and evaluation, we've determined that he has suffered a setback," said Trail Blazers President Larry Miller. "We're hopeful, but less confident that he will return to the court this season. We've stood by Greg from the day he was drafted and we continue to do so now with this agreement."
Lol rip
