i'm still unclear on this - so if a dude gets amnestied and is not picked up by another team on waivers, he basically gets his whole contract bought out? so if billups doesn't get picked up he'll be getting paid anyway and can sign with the heat for the vet min?

no, i think it's that the player's contract stays the same -- he doesn't get more or less money -- if he doesn't get picked up, the old team just pays it out as if he was on the team -- if he does get picked up, there's some system that determines how much of the existing contract the new team pays

v-shasty, Friday, 9 December 2011 17:43 (twelve years ago) link

no i think i read somewhere that the og team buys him out but the salary doesn't count against their cap?

k3vin k., Friday, 9 December 2011 17:44 (twelve years ago) link

i don't think that if the player gets picked up that he loses any of his salary -- there's no way the union would've agreed to that

v-shasty, Friday, 9 December 2011 17:46 (twelve years ago) link

in other news, the nets are going to get investigated by the league for tampering. apparently dwight met up w/ prohk & billy king in miami w/o orlando's knowledge.

v-shasty, Friday, 9 December 2011 17:47 (twelve years ago) link

"is not legal?"

yah he gets it all either way, only diff as far as i can tell is if he signs a new contract as a free agent he gets that money too

Cooper Chucklebutt, Friday, 9 December 2011 17:48 (twelve years ago) link

dear david stern plz send dwight howard to boston and also chris paul if u feel like it thank you

Cooper Chucklebutt, Friday, 9 December 2011 17:49 (twelve years ago) link

player is bought out for the amount due him; his salary does not count against the cap.

player is guaranteed to get all the money remaining on his contract.

teams under the cap may bid on his services - x amount per year remaining. x amount is subtracted from the amount owed to him from original team and paid by claimant.

if he clears waivers, he may sign with whomever for whatever. I believe this is also subtracted from amount original team owes. I don't believe he can end up making more than before.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 9 December 2011 17:50 (twelve years ago) link

no i'm saying that a team can cut a bad contract to make room for someone else, but they still have to pay him his contract. but that money is basically under the table and the contract does not count on their payroll

so say billups is not picked up on waivers by another team - the knicks buy him out of his contract - he gets his money - and now since he's paid anyway he can just go to a contending team to play for a low price

but idk that wouldnt make sense b/c he could just re-sign with the knicks lol

k3vin k., Friday, 9 December 2011 17:51 (twelve years ago) link

xps

k3vin k., Friday, 9 December 2011 17:51 (twelve years ago) link

okay all of that makes sense -- the phrase "bought out" was throwing me off cuz normally it refers to the team buying the contract back for less than it's worth

v-shasty, Friday, 9 December 2011 17:51 (twelve years ago) link

yah is there a rule that u cant resign yr amnestied players

Cooper Chucklebutt, Friday, 9 December 2011 17:52 (twelve years ago) link

miss u big baby but i think your run here needed to be over

cad, Friday, 9 December 2011 17:52 (twelve years ago) link

so couldn't the knicks just amnesty him and - crossing their fingers hoping no one claims him - sign him for ten cents on the dollar, freeing up cap space?

xp ha i figured, that makes sense

k3vin k., Friday, 9 December 2011 17:53 (twelve years ago) link

If a team acquires an amnestied player through secondary waivers, they pay a portion of the player’s salary equal to their bid. If the Knicks waive Billups and the Clippers are the winning bidder at $5 million, then the Clippers pay him $5 million this season, with the Knicks continuing to be responsible for the remaining $9.2 million of his $14.2 million salary.

OOOO, Friday, 9 December 2011 17:54 (twelve years ago) link

My understanding is he can't resign with the Knicks. I believe any player bought out under amnesty or otherwise (say, the new stretch provision) may not sign with that team for a calendar year, as with traded players (preventing the Big Z/Gary Payton shenanigans of yore).

EZ Snappin, Friday, 9 December 2011 17:55 (twelve years ago) link

You can't make this shit up:

"Warriors reserve guard Charlie Bell spent hours in custody Thursday after showing up to court legally drunk for a hearing on his drunken driving case, according to the ABC affiliate in Flint, Mich."

EZ Snappin, Friday, 9 December 2011 18:00 (twelve years ago) link

o dude

Cooper Chucklebutt, Friday, 9 December 2011 18:01 (twelve years ago) link

apparently charlie bell really likes drinking!

cad, Friday, 9 December 2011 18:04 (twelve years ago) link

v-shasty, Friday, 9 December 2011 18:08 (twelve years ago) link

It's like that time Eddy Curry met his Weight Watcher's consultant at Golden Corral.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 9 December 2011 18:11 (twelve years ago) link

how fast does the amnesty process work (e.g., will we know today if billups or davis have been chosen by any of the below-cap teams)?

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 9 December 2011 18:11 (twelve years ago) link

lol, i'm hoping against hope that curry shows up today in top-shape!

he's been out of the news so long there's no idea what he'll look like, except it's likely he will be 836 pounds.

Adrian Wojnarowski @WojYahooNBA -- Y! Free Agent-Trade Buzz: Nets preparing huge offer for Nene Friday, reports swirling of tampering with Dwight Howard.

lol every star player is going to hate the league soon.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 9 December 2011 18:47 (twelve years ago) link

not sure if this tweet means that the nets -- fearing a tampering investigation or an invalidation of their possible trade with orlando -- are now turning away from howard to nene, or if this is the first piece of a two-piece plan to get both howard and nene on their team. that would be a pretty formidable frontcourt.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 9 December 2011 18:48 (twelve years ago) link

i don't see how they could afford howard nene and dwill, but who knows

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 9 December 2011 18:49 (twelve years ago) link

k3vin k., Friday, 9 December 2011 19:00 (twelve years ago) link

nene is athletic enough to play the 4

v-shasty, Friday, 9 December 2011 19:01 (twelve years ago) link

Sign Nene and trade him for Howard.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 9 December 2011 19:03 (twelve years ago) link

or that -- nene's agent would prob get a whiff of that and steer clear tho

v-shasty, Friday, 9 December 2011 19:04 (twelve years ago) link

@EthanJSkolnick -- The Heat got 3 years each of Battier and Jones for a combined total of less than $15M. Clippers paid $24M for 3 years of Caron.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 9 December 2011 19:30 (twelve years ago) link

and i guess samuel dalembert has gone into hibernation until nene decides where he's going

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 9 December 2011 19:31 (twelve years ago) link
