saw Kaspar Hauser at BAM tonight with Mike Sniper, Arturo & Aaron.

Finally saw Volver. The sheer pleasure of watching Almodovar unravel and tie (unconvincingly) the narrative outweighed the sense that this was simply ridiculous stuff. I don't know why Penelope Cruz is getting all the raves. She's fine, but every scene with Carmen Maura' big eyes and generous cheekbones in closeup warmed me.

Alfred Soto (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 15 December 2006 14:05 (seventeen years ago) link

I liked the hairdressing sister best, but Penelope is on a different sort of plane.

'L'ArmeƩ des Ombres' wins the 2006 New York Film Critics Circle Award for best foreign film, 37 years after it was made.

the white diamond - omg potent! herzog brings the strange, compassion, exploitation, absurdity, all that. and as usual just a beautiful movie.

yes, this movie was a treat

It wasn't as satisfying or creepy as Grizzly Man. The last third was quite dull.

Alfred Soto (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 15 December 2006 20:41 (seventeen years ago) link

I liked it considerably more than GM.

Can a Michael Winner film be 'awesome'?

Dr M (Dr Morbius), Friday, 15 December 2006 20:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Looking forward to White Diamond (in queue), I am a sucker for anything ft. an airship.

What other Herzog would you guys recommend? All I've seen so far are Grizzly Man and Incident At Loch Ness, which I am told aren't exactly representative.

Lessons of Darkness

sexyDancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 15 December 2006 21:07 (seventeen years ago) link

and I guess Fitzcarraldo but if you've already seen Aguirre it can seem sort of redundant (imo)

dmr (dmr), Friday, 15 December 2006 21:08 (seventeen years ago) link

My Best Fiend isn't such a bad place to start, being a mix of Kinskisms and Herzog's commentary.

sexyDancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 15 December 2006 21:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Fitzcarraldo = movie about pursuing yr dreams and the power of faith
Aguirre = movie about slow death at the hands of a tyrannical madman

Don't quite see the redundancy there. You can't even say that Kinski's performances are even remotely similar.

Definitely start with one of those, and if Kinski's not your cup of tea try Stroszek or Kaspar Hauser.

I love Herzog as a filmmaker, but Herzog as a personality can be tough to take sometimes. I couldn't finish watching My Best Fiend because of him.

Nu-Edward III (edward iii), Friday, 15 December 2006 21:21 (seventeen years ago) link

conversely, Herzog the man has an archetypical "good father" resonance in our household. Largely due to his voice-over talents and hi-jinks like this: http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2006/02/werner_herzog_s.html

sexyDancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 15 December 2006 21:33 (seventeen years ago) link

In classic Herzog fashion, the 63 year old director stated "Someone is shooting at us. We must go." The interview continued, however, as Herzog's pants became stained with blood. Herzog commented, "It was not a significant bullet. I am not afraid."

Yeah, that's why I say "sometimes". Sometimes he's patronly, other times he's just patronizing.

Nu-Edward III (edward iii), Friday, 15 December 2006 22:12 (seventeen years ago) link

they both strike me as madmen, Fitzcarraldo is just more dapper

but anyway, nevermind the redundant, I just liked Aguirre a lot better

fitzcarraldo and aguirre are both great but guy's made 50+ movies and only 8 (i think) are scripted - what of the documentaries?

great piece on him in last month's harper's inspired the white diamond viewing - he came off a lot better than expected. of course i've always placed him somewhere in the evil genius spectrum.

"Can a Michael Winner film be 'awesome'?"

um, hello, *the mechanic*, *death wish*, *the sentinel*?

anyway, scorpio is just cool 70's mayhem. is it great? no. highly entertaining though.

scott seward (121212), Friday, 15 December 2006 23:23 (seventeen years ago) link

oh i see lessons in darkness and my best fiend were uh mentioned there. my best fiend is fun if yr into kinski (waaaaay better than the autobio) but doesn't really have the usual herzog juice.

jhoshea (jhoshea), Friday, 15 December 2006 23:29 (seventeen years ago) link

c'mon it's a "greatest hits"
check out Herzog's largely fictitious documentary "Gesualdo: Death for 5 Voices" and there's a 3-in-1 doc dvd of a ski jumper, a cattle auctioneer, and the last man on a volcanic island about to blow you must see.

sexyDancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 15 December 2006 23:30 (seventeen years ago) link

piratebay is apparently a treasure trove of the guy

There's a great scene in "La Soufriere" in which Herzog is being chased around by clouds of deadly poison gas. Good fun.
