it's from the second (or third?) verse of "auld lang syne"!

do ppl dress up for met? should i buy a dress?

some people dress up... if you have something you'd wear to a quasi-nice cocktail party you'll be fine.

403. Winter bonfire! Heading back out now to beers and warming alternate sides of body over the fire pit. Too bad Evan has left for airport(?), he would love.

i would like to go to one dressy and grownuplike thing before i go back... i've been in jeans/sneakers/bedhead mode for the past few weeks and i need an excuse to put on pretty clothes and uncomfortable shoes!

307. Drunk!@ Awesome. Ready to sleep, and happily. Siblings and married-in are suddenly awesome.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 05:32 (seventeen years ago) link

dressing up is fun! i have dressed up like 4 times in the past 5 days! i am getting tired of it though and today wore most comfortable dress and decided a hoodie went with it fine. which was all a good choice b/c basically i spent the day 308. mildly drunk (this is my good drunk level, i think!) and 309. high, partly because my 310. new cute glass pipe i got for christmas! is the greatest. and yet i still managed to make 311. AWESOME TURKEY. my first turkey ever! plus yams and as already discussed, the stuffing and new-wave cookies of last night. and there was other good food. and finally i am tired and 312. happy and home.

all y'all should have seen the way people were reacting to the gingerbread nazi's. my friend j0sh nearly got fag-bashed by a black lesbian who wanted it taken down after he called her a 'humorless bitch.' i sure am glad i'm out of that town for a while.

308. Many good books for xmas.

maybe if you enjoy we can be opera buddies in the future? i can never find people who want to go.

tehresa (tehresa), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 19:26 (seventeen years ago) link

this'll be our first shot at the opera, I'll let you know how it goes! pictures of the set from when they were rehearsing look pretty great. seems kind of like a training-wheels opera for non-opera-buffs (Zhang Yimou + sung in English)

1006. Got almost an entire set of upper- and lower-case wooden type from antique store in Grand Rapids!!! No numerals or punct, sadly. Had to search through about 6 giant trays and pick out letters one by one, but no "e"s or "k"s AT ALL even though I found about 5 "q"s. Which means someone took all the missing letters for monograms or signs or something, damn their eyes (a word I cannot stamp with my new letters, alas).

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 28 December 2006 22:31 (seventeen years ago) link

what size?

jergins (jergins), Thursday, 28 December 2006 22:35 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't know what size officially, the lowercase letters are about an inch high with some ball serifs (a, j, r) and the rest squared off. Short and fat, the exterior of the o might be a full circle. Have to "what's that font" it later. Especially awesome: the cut of the Z/z, where the inside corners are cut into negative balls in the same proportion as the a/j/r.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 28 December 2006 23:01 (seventeen years ago) link

oooohh that is so dreamy. really.

the table is the table (trees), Thursday, 28 December 2006 23:47 (seventeen years ago) link

So it's similar to a wide Latin except the serifs are bracket-slab instead of the pointy ones. Identifont matches it most closely to the Linotype Egyptienne Bold Extended -- these are VERY squat and fatty letters! Oh god I'm in love. I will go back tomorrow and search and search for my missing letters (e, k, A, B, E, J, K, M, Q, R, X) and assorted bits. And good old mums has an old type tray somewhere.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 29 December 2006 01:17 (seventeen years ago) link

what are you going to make with them? or is it more just to look at?

jergins (jergins), Friday, 29 December 2006 01:18 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't know! I don't have frames or a press or anything and there aren't any spaces or furniture included, so the most I could do is stamp with them...? Prob only good for posters or signs. What would you do?

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 29 December 2006 01:23 (seventeen years ago) link

who typesets? really

baby wizard sex (gbx), Friday, 29 December 2006 01:47 (seventeen years ago) link

maybe stamp and cut out paper to make stencils, or use them as bookends or paperweights, or string them up as a luddite's version of poetry magnets, or maybe stamp nonsense directly onto t-shirts. something like that

xpost

jergins (jergins), Friday, 29 December 2006 01:49 (seventeen years ago) link

This is wood, not lead, no good for paperweights or bookends. Stencils not a bad idea but I think I really really like it as a curiosity...Kind of don't ever want to clean off the old ink and dust.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 29 December 2006 01:53 (seventeen years ago) link

1007. Finished both my dumb jobs forever and for good!
