Yes, this was offset with a monumental upgrade at point guard, but look at the big picture. Pau-for-Paul is pretty much an even swap.

luv hollinger but this is crazy talk

Cooper Chucklebutt, Friday, 9 December 2011 09:13 (twelve years ago) link

it boggles my mind that you think chandler is an all-star but Scola has no value.

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 9 December 2011 09:13 (twelve years ago) link

the hornets were very clearly taking the nuggets road to success of putting guys together and seeing what happens

v-shasty, Friday, 9 December 2011 09:13 (twelve years ago) link

adding pau to the hornets doesn't do anything for them

v-shasty, Friday, 9 December 2011 09:13 (twelve years ago) link

very few people agree with you about that

hey most people still think kobes the best player in the nba

Cooper Chucklebutt, Friday, 9 December 2011 09:14 (twelve years ago) link

yeah I'm just saying don't hold out hope that guys like adande are gonna be the ones disagreeing with you

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 9 December 2011 09:14 (twelve years ago) link

Scola is a really good player man. I disagree with you about Martin but at least I understand. But Scola is just obviously a good player.

chandler is an all star, like he played on an all star team, i never said scola doesnt have value, i have been a long time scola supporter on this v message board as a matter of fact, its martin who i think sucks, but a 31 y/o journey man is not the guy a rebuilding team needs

Cooper Chucklebutt, Friday, 9 December 2011 09:16 (twelve years ago) link

hes just liek a solid dude aka inconsequential in a trade for a top 5 player

Cooper Chucklebutt, Friday, 9 December 2011 09:17 (twelve years ago) link

he's not a journeyman in any sense of the word.

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 9 December 2011 09:18 (twelve years ago) link

hes like a journeyman+, hes not a game changer, he couldnt be the 3rd best player on a championship team, he could be prob the 5th best player on a championship team, i like him, he does his thing w/great aplomb, hes v crafty, chis paul is one of the great point gards to ever play the game

Cooper Chucklebutt, Friday, 9 December 2011 09:20 (twelve years ago) link

when did Chandler play on an all-star team?

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 9 December 2011 09:21 (twelve years ago) link

answer: in high school

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 9 December 2011 09:22 (twelve years ago) link

oops my bad i thought he did but he did not, anyway last year i wouldve picked him, hes one of the best defenders in the L!

Cooper Chucklebutt, Friday, 9 December 2011 09:23 (twelve years ago) link

07/08 he was sick in nola too!

Cooper Chucklebutt, Friday, 9 December 2011 09:24 (twelve years ago) link

i mean chris kaman made the team last year be serious!

Cooper Chucklebutt, Friday, 9 December 2011 09:26 (twelve years ago) link

sorry if this has already been posted, but dan gilbert's email to david stern, urging him to block the lakers/CP3 trade, is priceless:

Commissioner,

It would be a travesty to allow the Lakers to acquire Chris Paul in the apparent trade being discussed.

This trade should go to a vote of the 29 owners of the Hornets.

Over the next three seasons this deal would save the Lakers approximately $20 million in salaries and approximately $21 million in luxury taxes. That $21 million goes to non-taxpaying teams and to fund revenue sharing.

I cannot remember ever seeing a trade where a team got by far the best player in the trade and saved over $40 million in the process. And it doesn’t appear that they would give up any draft picks, which might allow to later make a trade for Dwight Howard. (They would also get a large trade exception that would help them improve their team and/or eventually trade for Howard.) When the Lakers got Pau Gasol (at the time considered an extremely lopsided trade) they took on tens of millions in additional salary and luxury tax and they gave up a number of prospects (one in Marc Gasol who may become a max-salary player).

I just don’t see how we can allow this trade to happen.

I know the vast majority of owners feel the same way that I do.

When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?

Please advise….

Dan G.

with best personal regards, danny g.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 9 December 2011 12:10 (twelve years ago) link

according to a writer for hoopsworld who seems to know his shit, the trade was nullified through the commissioner's veto power, not through an ownership role. In order to prevent collusion a governor was appointed to approve all financials (Jac Sperling) and he did so.

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 9 December 2011 12:12 (twelve years ago) link

hm. if that's the case, it is crazy. clearly, smaller-market owners (e.g., dan gilbert) were furious about the "competitive balance" issues in big-markets creating "superteams."

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 9 December 2011 12:14 (twelve years ago) link

damn, shit went ham itt

dayo, Friday, 9 December 2011 12:17 (twelve years ago) link

hey while y'all wer arguing about the minutia of the Knicks pick, u completely ignored the fact that mr chuklebutt holds all the cards bc cp3 is a franchise player and unless u get one in return the trade sucks from a business perspective even if it wast horrible for basketball

owners are pissed bc they're tired of the cycle of lakers getting what they want bc they always have the pieces/resources to make it happen, trade nullification is a legit interest to the league and the hornets bc without a franchise face, they have no reason to exist (remember: only six people live in new Orleans now)

q: are we not bel biv men? a: we are bel biv devo (m bison), Friday, 9 December 2011 12:19 (twelve years ago) link

but the alternative to trading cp3 is him leaving in a year and the franchise being destroyed. This was a good deal for a guy who is definitely leaving you in a year.

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 9 December 2011 12:21 (twelve years ago) link

I wonder how many of the traded players show up for training camp?

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 9 December 2011 12:23 (twelve years ago) link

remember when they traded kwame brown for pau gasol

remember

not looking like they will . . .

Chris Sheridan @sheridanhoops -- Dwight Howard is reportedly going to ask for a trade to the Nets, unless things suddenly change. Which can happen.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 9 December 2011 13:43 (twelve years ago) link

lol

In light of the league's refusal to allow Chris Paul to dictate a trade to the Los Angeles Lakers, one has to wonder if it will sit idly by and let Howard facilitate a move to the Nets.

if the nba won't let a star player move to the NEW JERSEY NETS, who WILL they let him move to?

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 9 December 2011 13:44 (twelve years ago) link

i sympathize w/players wanting to force trades to certain places and all but its really starting to be kinda a downer

Cooper Chucklebutt, Friday, 9 December 2011 13:47 (twelve years ago) link

good question

Ethan Skolnick @EthanJSkolnick -- If the half of the players who didn't bother to vote on the new CBA were given another chance to vote now, how would they vote?

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 9 December 2011 13:58 (twelve years ago) link

theyd prob vote wtf is going on right now

Cooper Chucklebutt, Friday, 9 December 2011 13:59 (twelve years ago) link

now that would make the paul trade look quite reasonable in comparison

Cooper Chucklebutt, Friday, 9 December 2011 14:06 (twelve years ago) link

haha. yep. well, bear in mind that bynum is the only other player discussed as the "centerpiece" going to the magic in exchange for howard.

if healthy for the long-haul, i'd take bynum over lopez, but that's a big if.
