I thought it was just any player who retired at least five years ago and who played at least 10 seasons?

oh

BBWAA: Former Major Leaguers who have been active some time during a period of 20 years before and ending five years prior to election and have played in a minimum of 10 seasons. Any player on Major League Baseball's ineligible list is not an eligible candidate. In the event of death of an eligible candidate, the five-year waiting period shall be reduced to six months (this has occurred three times: Lou Gehrig in 1939, Roberto Clemente in 1973 and Thurman Munson in 1979. Gehrig and Clemente earned election).

I don't think you automatically get on the ballot with 10/5 tho, there'd be many more if so.

I really can't see how you can let Rice and Dawson in but not Murphy.

Garrett Martin, Tuesday, 28 November 2006 20:23 (seventeen years ago) link

BOBBY WITT???? More like BOBBY WTF, amirite?

Andy_K (Andy_K), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 20:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, I guess you're right, Dr. M.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 20:33 (seventeen years ago) link

(Which I verified by seeing Heathcliff Slocumb was listed among the eligibles last year. He wasn't.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 20:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Rice, Dawson, Murphy should all hafta buy tickets to get in.

Dr M (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 20:46 (seventeen years ago) link

i think it is safe to assume at this point mcgwire won't be getting in this year and probably will never make it.

deep space nine (deep space nine), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 21:02 (seventeen years ago) link

I'd like to think I would support Murphy's candidacy regardless of hometeam bias. Two MVPs, most homers and rbi's in the '80's, etc. But I can't support Rice or Dawson, and none of the three really stand out above the rest.

garnet marstin, Tuesday, 28 November 2006 21:46 (seventeen years ago) link

I'd love to know what type of numbers Eric Davis could have put up if he could have avoided injuries. If you are talking raw talent and ability, the guy was an absolute freak of a player.

Rice>Dawson>Murphy

lol @ Dave Concepcion, not because he wasn't a decent player, but he stopped playing like 25 years ago (big red machine)- gotta be his last year of eligibilty, right?

bliss (blass), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 06:28 (seventeen years ago) link

mcgwire ...probably will never make it.

Never is a very long time. None of us have any idea how the Juice Era is going to be perceived 20-30 years from now.

[Murphy's]Two MVPs, most homers and rbi's in the '80's

wtf, Only BBwriters would use a writers' award as a criterion for a different BBwriters' honor. RBIs, a counting stat -- Mark Grace had the most hits in the '90s; he's no HOFer.

Bill Weber (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 14:42 (seventeen years ago) link

yes but the counting stats point towards consistency and a sustained period of awesomeness, two things which carry weight in pointless theoretical HoF debates. and prime counting stat plus general alrightness (ie Grace's case) does not equate to prime counting stat plus MVP awards and All-Star games and general recognition as the best hitter in your league for four or five years (preceded by another five or six years of above-averageness). plus good rbi totals on a consistently shitty team SHOULD count for something, counting stat nature be damned.

giblet marmot, Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:36 (seventeen years ago) link

good rbi totals in a bandbox?

Dr M (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 17:47 (seventeen years ago) link

if there's one thing i know, it's that baseball writers are notorious douchebags and so are many ex-players who are guarding the gates of the hall and they hold grudges for players they never met who are perceived to have done wrong.

The mindblower is the current Veterans Committee not yet voting in Marvin Miller, who made most of them rich.

four weeks pass...
If Bruce Sutter is in, Concepcion and Blyleven should be elected. They deserves more than Sutter.

Now they can disband the 'Golden Era' committee.

Nice. Too late, but good for his family.
