Arabxilla is a pretty weird #1. It has its moments but a bunch of it is unlistenable imo.

7. RICK ROSS God Forgives, I Don’t (Maybach)

lol so they made this list, what, 2 months ago assuming that this album was going to come out in december?

v-shasty, Thursday, 8 December 2011 23:39 (twelve years ago) link

a lot of editors are really bad at their jobs

v-shasty, Thursday, 8 December 2011 23:39 (twelve years ago) link

love love love arabxilla

nuhnuhnuh, Thursday, 8 December 2011 23:42 (twelve years ago) link

i'm glad to see the thundercat album getting a couple nods

furnace mane, Friday, 9 December 2011 00:26 (twelve years ago) link

lol, I honestly thought the FACT list would tie into my sensibilities; this really says more about how little I actually pay attention to FACT than anything else

I think the problem with FACT is that it styles itself as being a dance music title whereas a lot of the music it covers either isn't dance music at all or is bedroom music that appeals to people who like the idea of dance music more than actually dancing. There are honourable exceptions obviously but bar a handful of nights in London it doesn't seem to have any connection to actual club culture.

I couldn't get into it as much as I wanted (that is to say I thought the concept and general vibe was great) but it's neat to see it at no.1 on a mag's list anyway

if that makes sense?

Extreme Lifestyle, Friday, 9 December 2011 10:48 (twelve years ago) link

AÉREA NEGROT Arabxilla - I love this record. I think this is the most interesting No 1 I've seen yet. The rest of the list is kinda iffy tho.

OCCUPY DEPRESSION (Fotherington Thomas), Friday, 9 December 2011 11:08 (twelve years ago) link

I couldn't listen to that album at all, and not just in a 'meh' way. I had a proper physical feelings of antipathy towards it. It's certainly a bold number one. Also, I can't fathom why they didn't have Rustie on that list, but stuff like Hudson Mohawke instead.

los krampusinos! (pomplamau5), Friday, 9 December 2011 11:18 (twelve years ago) link

i found arabxilla completely unlistenable too tbh :(

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Friday, 9 December 2011 11:19 (twelve years ago) link

but at the same time it's def a bold, unpredictable no 1 in a good way - far rather that than the sbtrkt, for example, which seems to be a "top 20 everywhere" token electronic album, which is tooooootes overrated

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Friday, 9 December 2011 11:20 (twelve years ago) link

See that's just me - I'd much rather the No1 that half the listeners found "completely unlistenable" and the other half were all "wheee, best! thing! evah!" than some blahblah consensus pick that no one could find anything particularly wrong with but no one was willing to go handbags at dawn over. (repeat to fade)

OCCUPY DEPRESSION (Fotherington Thomas), Friday, 9 December 2011 11:24 (twelve years ago) link

Fairly sure that's accounting from the cross-the-board high placings for the Metronomy album as well. Which is kind of... not bad exactly but really is this it?

Matt DC, Friday, 9 December 2011 11:27 (twelve years ago) link

metronomy are so blahhh that i tend to fail to even take in their placing on EOY lists

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Friday, 9 December 2011 11:28 (twelve years ago) link

Propose new rule: if you are not willing to get in a fistfight over your AOTY then you cannot make it No 1.

I am generally pro-Metronomy but I couldn't get an aural hold on that album. Think it's leftover goodwill from ignoring them before? Dunno.

OCCUPY DEPRESSION (Fotherington Thomas), Friday, 9 December 2011 11:29 (twelve years ago) link

I was reading about the Metronomy album and it sounded kind of interesting, in a conceptual way - but that said I really didn't like the c2008/9 album they did at all. Utterly ghastly. Is this any better/different?

would happily punch anyone dissing beyoncé so YES

I'm not sure I'm willing to get into a fistfight over an album about the horrors of war :/

Matt DC, Friday, 9 December 2011 11:32 (twelve years ago) link

if you are not willing to get in a fistfight over your AOTY

Last time I got *that* overboard with an album, it was "Voice of the 7 woods"

Good old Spotify means I can have-a-try of AÉREA NEGROT Arabxilla tonight.

Jilted John and Marsha (MarkG oo la showaddywaddy), Friday, 9 December 2011 11:40 (twelve years ago) link

xpost Neither could I really see myself taking off my watch to defend a concept record about the bleakness of a Scottish fishing village.

dog latin, Friday, 9 December 2011 11:41 (twelve years ago) link

I would totally take it outside the baaaaah with my friend Oliviaaaaaaah over my AOTY so I'm fine with it.

Minga Frump (Jimmy Riddle), Friday, 9 December 2011 13:47 (twelve years ago) link

among whom is it common slang, though?

Mr. Stevenson #2, Friday, 9 December 2011 13:49 (twelve years ago) link

Why is it taking the Guardian so fucking long to roll out their top ten?

los krampusinos! (pomplamau5), Friday, 9 December 2011 13:51 (twelve years ago) link

RA haven't even started their 50 yet!

april wowak, Friday, 9 December 2011 13:53 (twelve years ago) link

among whom is it common slang, though?

last time that was asked he said Jamaican women in London iirc

Minga Frump (Jimmy Riddle), Friday, 9 December 2011 13:54 (twelve years ago) link

Haha wow there isn't a single good record in the Graun's top 10 so far.

Matt DC, Friday, 9 December 2011 13:55 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i was getting at how a) that's part of why it's obnoxious when he does it and b) that's why nobody else on ilx ever says it.

Mr. Stevenson #2, Friday, 9 December 2011 13:56 (twelve years ago) link

kmt = caribbean diasporic slang that has become part of the lingua franca of british urban youth. i dunno, do your own research. tons of people i know use it

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Friday, 9 December 2011 13:57 (twelve years ago) link

dunno if british is right lex. Seems like its a part of london only, certainly not used across the whole of the UK

Minga Frump (Jimmy Riddle), Friday, 9 December 2011 13:59 (twelve years ago) link

I've only ever seen two people do it in real life: An enormous Jamaican dude outside a pub who insisted on telling me about how he once produced the Clash, and a skinny junkie kid who I think was looking to steal my wallet...

dog latin, Friday, 9 December 2011 14:01 (twelve years ago) link

i've seen plenty of people from manchester and birmingham use it

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Friday, 9 December 2011 14:02 (twelve years ago) link

It's a bit like when Prince Harry says 'BRAP!'

Matt DC, Friday, 9 December 2011 14:04 (twelve years ago) link

I would not have been mad at FACT if they had put Frank Ocean at #1

However, they put Tyler there instead, so hell yes I am mad at them

OH NOES, Friday, 9 December 2011 14:28 (twelve years ago) link

also everything I could find on Spotify has been added to the FACT playlist

http://open.spotify.com/track/7ItGBG7x9PbJssFgRgB0yj

OH NOES, Friday, 9 December 2011 14:58 (twelve years ago) link

i don't care about tyler's album but "yonkers" is a pretty undeniable "oh shit" banger of a track
