I've never heard Chris Bell's "Speed of Sound," but I'm going to go ahead and assert that Coldplay's "Speed of Sound" is better.

jaymc, Thursday, 8 December 2011 22:14 (twelve years ago) link

Actually, I recently learned that Coldplay's "Speed of Sound" was musically inspired by Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill"!

jaymc, Thursday, 8 December 2011 22:14 (twelve years ago) link

baaaaaaaah
assert this, buster

league of women voters, Thursday, 8 December 2011 22:20 (twelve years ago) link

tehresa, Friday, 9 December 2011 05:10 (twelve years ago) link

Oops I just reread I know who jesse is! It was another id I was confused about.

tehresa, Friday, 9 December 2011 05:11 (twelve years ago) link

You're staying not far from where jaymc and I work (we work in different places, but close to each other).

thejenny, Friday, 9 December 2011 13:16 (twelve years ago) link

Idk gleacher center. Huh.

Surprising bus bunching this morning: 4 Halsted buses together ~1 mile from the start of the line.

Sandbox Jesse, Friday, 9 December 2011 14:33 (twelve years ago) link

I've heard of the Gleacher Center, but I couldn't tell you where it is.

jaymc, Friday, 9 December 2011 14:42 (twelve years ago) link

(I mean, I just looked it up, so now I know.)

jaymc, Friday, 9 December 2011 14:48 (twelve years ago) link

the trains were all bunched up too, there was some problem in the loop again

n/a, Friday, 9 December 2011 15:28 (twelve years ago) link

Y'know first light dusting of snow of the year.

I left my login in El Sandboxo, Friday, 9 December 2011 15:30 (twelve years ago) link

I know!

I heard on the radio that Brown, Purple, and Orange lines were rerouted through the State St. subway due to a problem at Clark & Lake.

Sandbox Jesse, Friday, 9 December 2011 15:33 (twelve years ago) link

Huh. I guess they fixed it by the time I got here.

thejenny, Friday, 9 December 2011 18:19 (twelve years ago) link

apparently the holidays have already started because this place is a GHOST TOWN

league of women voters, Friday, 9 December 2011 18:46 (twelve years ago) link

my work is going to start adding QR codes that connect to our website on all of our business cards. this seems like a terrible idea and i hate it.

n/a, Friday, 9 December 2011 18:59 (twelve years ago) link

Huh, I never knew the name for those.

jaymc, Friday, 9 December 2011 19:00 (twelve years ago) link

I'm convinced people only use those 1. in Japan 2. when they are going to get something for free

tumblr whineys (Cuauhtemoc Blanco), Friday, 9 December 2011 19:01 (twelve years ago) link

BECAUSE NO ONE USES THEM
xpost

n/a, Friday, 9 December 2011 19:01 (twelve years ago) link

also they're going to make our business cards look really really ugly

n/a, Friday, 9 December 2011 19:01 (twelve years ago) link

and our website is short and easy to remember! i could just tell them the website and they would remember it!

n/a, Friday, 9 December 2011 19:01 (twelve years ago) link

How do they work, anyway? A smartphone scans them? Idgi.

jaymc, Friday, 9 December 2011 19:02 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i think you need an app on your smartphone to scan them and they take you to a website.

n/a, Friday, 9 December 2011 19:03 (twelve years ago) link

in case all of your fingers are unable to type

league of women voters, Friday, 9 December 2011 19:03 (twelve years ago) link

it kind of makes sense if you're taking someone to a specific page on a site that might have a long URL but our url is basically www.nameoforganization.org

n/a, Friday, 9 December 2011 19:05 (twelve years ago) link

you can also tell that people got to your site via the QR code, hence the "getting something for free" promotional aspect

we used the things for some PR/communications tests for the soccer crew, it wasn't really worth the hassle in the end for us

tumblr whineys (Cuauhtemoc Blanco), Friday, 9 December 2011 19:08 (twelve years ago) link

Hey, PP is doing clinic escort training again if anybody wants to stand out in the cold and get yelled at by religious fundamentalists.

thejenny, Friday, 9 December 2011 19:11 (twelve years ago) link

Can we yell back? :D (I kid)

tumblr whineys (Cuauhtemoc Blanco), Friday, 9 December 2011 19:12 (twelve years ago) link

xp actually, you can't! But you can take great comfort in other people yelling back.

Also, my favorite QR code misuse is when businesses send out emails w/ QR codes in them, because if you get the email on your phone, you can't scan the QR code with your phone, and if you get the email on your computer, just click the link to go to the website.

Also, I hate QR codes.

thejenny, Friday, 9 December 2011 19:13 (twelve years ago) link

are you gonna do it jenny?
i might could do that

league of women voters, Friday, 9 December 2011 19:13 (twelve years ago) link

I did it for years until I took a "break" about a year and a half ago, that as it turns out, might be "the conclusion" of my stint as a patient escort. I half burned out and half couldn't take the abuse on my poor, wretched knee.

thejenny, Friday, 9 December 2011 19:16 (twelve years ago) link

I still do other stuff like phone banking, showing up at protests, shit like that.

thejenny, Friday, 9 December 2011 19:17 (twelve years ago) link

i would stand out in the cold with you but maybe not by myself
although i would relish getting yelled at by those cretins

league of women voters, Friday, 9 December 2011 19:17 (twelve years ago) link

well giving them the eye while they yelled at me

league of women voters, Friday, 9 December 2011 19:18 (twelve years ago) link

The Good Emily still does it. She's been doing this since before we started law school. I don't know how she manages, frankly.

thejenny, Friday, 9 December 2011 19:22 (twelve years ago) link

every week? wow.

league of women voters, Friday, 9 December 2011 19:23 (twelve years ago) link

No! Once a month/every other month. I don't think there is a human alive who could do this every week.

thejenny, Friday, 9 December 2011 19:25 (twelve years ago) link

I think I would be great at it.

Jeff, Friday, 9 December 2011 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

so, just curious, but what kind of being yelled at are we talking about? "you're going to hell, die in a fire" kind of yelling?

tumblr whineys (Cuauhtemoc Blanco), Friday, 9 December 2011 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

didn't you say the florist down the street gives the protesters flowers and calls the patients sluts?

Sandbox Jesse, Friday, 9 December 2011 19:33 (twelve years ago) link

Pretty much, yes.

The less batshit crazy people just stand around and sing hymns or pray. There are a handful of totally crackers people who like, do this kind of harassment for a living, and they are the ones who really get into the "YOU ARE GOING TO HELL FOR KILLING BABIES" type stuff directed at the escorts, specifically. There's also a healthy dose of misinformation about various Constitutional rights, so like if you offer to walk someone into the clinic because she is getting harassed by one of the more aggressive protesters, you'll get some YOU ARE VIOLATING MY FREEDOM OF SPEECH type stuff.

Oh and one lady likes to fling holy water around. She's not supposed to fling it on the escorts, but if you aren't watching, she totally will.

xp yup. Please do not EVER buy flowers from that guy (LaSalle and Division). He is a hateful, hateful piece of shit.

thejenny, Friday, 9 December 2011 19:36 (twelve years ago) link

do they attempt to provoke the escorts? (assuming so...)

tumblr whineys (Cuauhtemoc Blanco), Friday, 9 December 2011 19:52 (twelve years ago) link

Definitely. The crazy ones aren't trying to accomplish anything with it. It's more like they are just filled with hate and rage and if you are in the way, you will get an earful of it. Some of the more "normal" folks are crafty and evil and will try to provoke the escorts on purpose to make us leave or break the law. Like, I think some of them would love nothing more than to provoke an escort into punching them in the throat so they could use that to their advantage.

thejenny, Friday, 9 December 2011 19:59 (twelve years ago) link

Have you all ever listened to Aziz Ansari's stand up album? It is really funny and I have one of the songs he sings as a punch line stuck in my head and it might make me lose my mind.

thejenny, Saturday, 10 December 2011 00:18 (twelve years ago) link

I watched his standup on netflix I think?

I would also like to note that 2011: The Year of Excuse Me is drawing to a close. Pay your respects.

league of women voters, Saturday, 10 December 2011 00:24 (twelve years ago) link

i guess the enrique song was technically released in 2010, but anything that was in the academic year of 2010-2011 kind of blends together in a painful excuse-riddled haze for me
this wiki is cracking me up http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonight_%28I%27m_Lovin%27_You%29

Clinic escorting is something I give serious thought to. I should do it, and frankly, the only thing standing in my way is laziness.

Sandbox Jesse, Saturday, 10 December 2011 17:55 (twelve years ago) link

I mean, I'm pretty much meant for the job, you know?

Sandbox Jesse, Saturday, 10 December 2011 17:56 (twelve years ago) link

PLANNING UPDATE:
