If this is the Opal you meant then I think rev's point about market share is even more valid. Also, talking about originality and names in a Jamaican context is different than in other places. Ninjaman gets big, so you get Ninja Kid and Ninja Ford. Horace Hinds changed his name to Horace Andy because Bob Andy was popular; etc. It would be going well against the grain to worry about sharing a name with a late 80s psych band.

going by the arguments i've seen on luciano's last.fm page (among many others) i'd say the fans, at least, definitely mind, on all sides

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Thursday, 8 December 2011 21:23 (twelve years ago) link

that page is interesting--I wonder if last.fm will pretty much force this kind of change to happen

rob (night house), Thursday, 8 December 2011 21:34 (twelve years ago) link

google will! i love last.fm but i'm not sure it'll ever really have the necessary sway for that. you have many situations where there are multiple artists with the same name, but if they're all confined to different locations (karizma and kingdom spring to mind) i doubt it bothers them...

I think people have the right to perform under their given names whether they share it with some metal band or whatever.

― furnace mane, Thursday, December 8, 2011 7:32 PM (Yesterday) Bookmark Permalink

a) Tell this to actors. Really, you are not aware of the fact that it is almost impossible to make a case for performing under your given name if there is a previously existing member of Equity who uses it?

b) I have no idea why you associate me with metal bands. That's a bit weird.

c) On the other hand, this is more acceptable of an answer:

Not really sure internet penetration in Jamaica is that great (a quick google search says not really, no), esp. among the poor, but OK.

There is a casual assumption that *everyone* has the internet now, and yes, it's fair enough that you challenge that.

Okay, I'm not au fait enough with the artists to be entirely sure what point you're making, so if I'm misunderstanding you feel free to correct me. But, on a surface level, you seem to be equating making a name in tribute to another act with taking the name of another act entirely. Which is so different as to be ridiculous that you'd even suggest that they were the same. It's perfectly reasonably to call yourselves a pun, a tribute, a nod or whatever, as long as the name itself is different.

Illia Rump (emil.y), Friday, 9 December 2011 00:10 (twelve years ago) link

As in, there is no way that 'Horace Andy' and 'Bob Andy' are the same. How do you make that distinction between 'Opal' and 'Opal'?

Illia Rump (emil.y), Friday, 9 December 2011 00:11 (twelve years ago) link

There are loads of examples of bands accidentally taking on the same names as other bands, Nirvana being perhaps the most prominent example. When I was scanning around for more music by Sully, I ended up coming across a Canadian indie band, an Irish producer and ended up buying something off Boomkat I'm pretty sure is by none of those three artists.

dog latin, Friday, 9 December 2011 00:18 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, and you know what? One of my bands googled, we found an obscure defunct band had already taken the name we were going to use, and WE CHANGED IT. Because we weren't a bunch of dicks.

Illia Rump (emil.y), Friday, 9 December 2011 00:21 (twelve years ago) link

btw, my #1 album is by the 18,000th group named King.

furnace mane, Friday, 9 December 2011 00:23 (twelve years ago) link

As I say, rev, I think your point about internet penetration stands, and I fully cop to that assumption, but your other points I disagree with.

Illia Rump (emil.y), Friday, 9 December 2011 00:24 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, I think are main disagreement is over whether this even slightly matters.

Which is so different as to be ridiculous that you'd even suggest that they were the same. It's perfectly reasonably to call yourselves a pun, a tribute, a nod or whatever, as long as the name itself is different.

They're not really done in tribute to the established artists, they're essentially done so the new artist can jump on the bandwagon of the bigger artist's popularity. Like if in the late 50s a new rock singer had come out named Elvis Peterson and no one batted an eye. But yes, you're right, those examples are not the same as Opal not checking for the existence of a band called Opal.

This is a big generalization, but my point was that in Jamaican music culture there is much less of a perceived ethical harm in copying--there, I believe, this wouldn't be seen as a dickish thing to do. OTOH since the band Opal have been defunct for two decades, I'm not sure what the harm is anyway? You make a good point about actors and Equity, but I see lots of (I) and (II)s behind actors' names on the imdb all the time.

Anyone want to nominate the Zombi album? I only have two noms left, need to save them for a while.

― thread of missing brony (sean doily), Thursday, December 8, 2011 3:50 PM (7 hours ago) Bookmark Permalink

i say this every year, but seriously: if you want something nominated, you should do it yourself. and if you won't or haven't for some reason, and noone else does, then it probably wasn't going to get votes anyway, so either way there's no point in asking someone else to nominate something.

That last one was the 3rd EP I've nominated - Assuming they've always been allowed as "albums" right? Guessing not many people will vote any of them but to me a cohesive 20+ minute EP should be in the same category, can be as much of a complete work as an LP

Love the idea of some Jamaican dancehall dude Googling his proposed name and changing it in order to avoid upsetting some random twee indie band from Glasgow or somewhere. I mean, the very idea is ridiculous.

Dunno, I figure there's some value in nudging people or at least reminding them an album exists. I mentioned the Zombi album because they're ILM faves and I assume that a good few people here will consider voting for it.
