rooney has been shit for a season and a half now, bar little bumps in form. the young lad from city daniel sturridge should be getting all his hype.

Bryan Ruiz: “I didn’t want to go to Fulham at all. I was happy with Tottenham’s previous interest in me. They are a dream club. Attractive financial terms, and a talk with Martin Jol, dragged me over the line.”

“The fact remains that in Mancini’s fifth Champions League season as a manager of a club at the very top level of financial support, with a vastly expensive array of talent at his disposal, he has failed even to make it out of the group stage.”

mancini really is the worst.

big popppa hoy, Thursday, 8 December 2011 11:27 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, he'll never win as many Champions League titles as Wenger

Maybe Bartering Will Help (Julie Lagger), Thursday, 8 December 2011 11:30 (twelve years ago) link

arsenal wouldn't have had a prayer in that group

well, at least we've never failed to make it out of the group stages. but 5 times with the pick of any players he wanted is just rubbish.

big popppa hoy, Thursday, 8 December 2011 11:33 (twelve years ago) link

They look certainties to be back next season when these experiences will be put to good use and the current squad is likely to have been augmented by more marquee arrivals.

god bless El Nultio

Maybe Bartering Will Help (Julie Lagger), Thursday, 8 December 2011 11:33 (twelve years ago) link

xp Mancini was appointed December 2009

by my reckoning, that means he was in charge for the 2010-11 campaign and for this one. that's 2 goes

Maybe Bartering Will Help (Julie Lagger), Thursday, 8 December 2011 11:35 (twelve years ago) link

before we even get into arguments about how Manchester City - who have taken the unprecedented step of spending lots of money to buy star players - are unique in this terrible 2 year lag between having money to spend and a winning team emerging

Maybe Bartering Will Help (Julie Lagger), Thursday, 8 December 2011 11:36 (twelve years ago) link

Well thats including Inter.

He never had Song in any of his teams tho, eh?

ahh otm, in the circumstances city's cl progress is p much a glaring failure

I'm all for bashing wenger for not buying better players, but zinging him using mancini doesn't even remotely work.

bloating forecast: ruff swells (p much resigned to deems), Thursday, 8 December 2011 11:41 (twelve years ago) link

What's with the pile on? Mancini's recent European record is abysmal

Number None, Thursday, 8 December 2011 11:42 (twelve years ago) link

at the start of August imo it was 50-50 whether Mancini wd last the season with City, but if this season isn't evidence that he's learning from his mistakes and that his team is starting to gel a bit then god knows what is, i'm pretty sure his CL failure this season will be made up for by winning the league, and i think he'll come back with a better CL campaign next season.

Maybe Bartering Will Help (Julie Lagger), Thursday, 8 December 2011 11:46 (twelve years ago) link

When do UEFA's new financial rules come into force?

Tony Hart land (Deep in the Tony Hart land), Thursday, 8 December 2011 11:47 (twelve years ago) link

"force"

Maybe Bartering Will Help (Julie Lagger), Thursday, 8 December 2011 11:47 (twelve years ago) link

They already are in "force" aren't they?

Number None, Thursday, 8 December 2011 11:48 (twelve years ago) link

Are they? LOL. Platini fixed it for Lyon to go through last night, so he must have some power

Tony Hart land (Deep in the Tony Hart land), Thursday, 8 December 2011 11:49 (twelve years ago) link

You can't lose more than a certain amount over the next three seasons or something

Number None, Thursday, 8 December 2011 11:50 (twelve years ago) link

I thought 12/13 was the year of FFP. But it invokes the three previous seasons, so this year will be assessed then.

And at Inter, he won the league by taking the leagues best players and... they failed in Europe and all tried to leave/were deemed a bit shit by Jose who tried to replace them.

Swiss Ramble did City and FFP recently - conclusion was that they will more-or-less meet the criteria as their income is ramping up hugely, and with only a little tinkering (e.g. sell Tevez) definitely will.

srsly

rooney is not as good as say nicky barmby, if you average it out over his career

feel the english posters need to acknowledge this and get some peace

mancini has made it out of the group stages before tho i think, twice at least

pandemic, Thursday, 8 December 2011 13:08 (twelve years ago) link

nick barmby, we all agree on this, explicitly?

bloating forecast: ruff swells (p much resigned to deems), Thursday, 8 December 2011 13:12 (twelve years ago) link

Barmby's highs were lower but he was more consistent maybe

Maybe Bartering Will Help (Julie Lagger), Thursday, 8 December 2011 13:32 (twelve years ago) link

making a better fist of management than i can imagine Wayne doing tho :D

Maybe Bartering Will Help (Julie Lagger), Thursday, 8 December 2011 13:32 (twelve years ago) link

Rooney - 2002-present (8 and a half seasons)- 126 goals - 14 goals per season
Barmby - 1991-2000 (9 seasons) - 47 goals - 5.2 goals a season.

Maybe pick someone else?

NotEnough, Thursday, 8 December 2011 13:33 (twelve years ago) link

barmby was pretty good for lfc in 2001 treble...was weird when he got unceremoniously dumped after that.

Would love to see Rafa at Citeh with the full support of the board for just three or four more signings.

James, Thursday, 8 December 2011 13:50 (twelve years ago) link

i won't pick anyone else, tbh. rooney has managed 14 goals a season as the focal point of manchester utd's attack, nicky barmby scored a good few goals in a career as a creative midfielder, or at best second striker, for spurs, hull, middlesborough, everton, lfc et al, none of whom were winning leagues or supplying their strikers with cronaldo et al at the time.

Barmby-level performance, imo, flatters rooney somewhat.

Reasonable Dutchman, emotional Latin stereotypes ahoy:

"If there was something unusual, Uefa should investigate what happened in Zagreb. My assistants have told me that the goals came quick and easy, because you can't normally score these goals in half an hour. But destiny was in our own hands … I will have to see video replays [of the disallowed goals]."

The Lyon sporting director, Bernard Lacombe, said: "It's total rubbish, people should stop saying such things. Did they open an investigation at half-time when it was 1-1? I don't give a damn what the Ajax manager says. Apparently we are also responsible for the refereeing of the match in Amsterdam …"

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 8 December 2011 14:01 (twelve years ago) link

LOL who's the Ajax manager?

Tony Hart land (Deep in the Tony Hart land), Thursday, 8 December 2011 14:04 (twelve years ago) link

well, at least we've never failed to make it out of the group stages

Is this true? I thought Arsenal always used to go out at group stages? Didn't you play your home games at Wembley and do really badly? I can't remember when this was.

The Artist Formerly Known As Teh HoBB, Thursday, 8 December 2011 14:04 (twelve years ago) link

oooh, the annual 4-4-2 list is out. should we poll it?

big popppa hoy, Thursday, 8 December 2011 14:11 (twelve years ago) link

"On this stage a 7-1 away win is an exception. Maybe I'm naive when I think it normally doesn't work like this, but if Zagreb gave the match away they should be punished," Frank De Boer said after a night that consigned Ajax to the Europa League.

"But I think it is hard to find any evidence in this case," he told reporters.

funniest placing is rooney at #6 obv.

gerrard #78th best player despite playing like 3 games.
