When it was a shark instead of a sex pervert and it wasn't a pool at all but a beach on Amity Island, maybe.

Having finished the other half of Nelson, my take on it miraculously didn't change from before. Who says piecemeal viewing distorts one's impression?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 08:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Too bad Gosling's long-"deserved" hype had to wait for a condescending liberal b.s. vehicle to be birthed (I'll stick with the Jewish Nazi movie & The Slaughter Rule).

Jeanne la Pucelle

(1st Rivette I've liked)

it doesnt matter

I watched The Faculty a few months ago at my parents house, the description listed Clea Duvall and Josh Hartnett in the "starring" thing, it was a fairly pleasant shock to find Frodo Baggins, The Daily Show's Jon Stewart, Jean Grae, etc etc in it. A fun stupid movie!

nklshs (nklshs), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 15:45 (seventeen years ago) link

I enjoyed Lucky # Slevin in that it is probably the only time I will ever hear Morgan Freeman cuss.

nklshs (nklshs), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 15:46 (seventeen years ago) link

the faculty was rodriguez, no? kind of fun stupid movies

holy shit that movie. it was like a cartoon.

grbchv! (gbx), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 15:57 (seventeen years ago) link

my buddy is the quarterback in that.

i am in love with the departed.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 16:30 (seventeen years ago) link

What was condescending about Half Nelson?

Why does the presence of Jackie Earle Haley negate the brilliance of the setpiece in Little Children?

Can we change the thread title so as not to attract ILF cranks?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 16:45 (seventeen years ago) link

for starters, the oh-so-gratuitous scene w/Gosling's family near end

Bill Weber (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 16:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Gratuitous, maybe, but I didn't think it was heavy-handed, and I liked watching them all interact.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 17:12 (seventeen years ago) link

i am in love with the departed.

Jams, Altman or Betty Comden?

Dr M (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 17:20 (seventeen years ago) link

last night - Dawn of the Dead remake. not bad altho essentially a huge 28 Days Later ripoff. opening bit before the credits was grebt.

I cosign the Faculty too

dmr, Tuesday, 28 November 2006 17:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Why does the presence of Jackie Earle Haley negate the brilliance of the setpiece in Little Children?

He negates nothing because there is no brilliance in it to be negated. I'm sorry, jmc, but this is a definitively worthless movie.

Can we change the thread title so as not to attract ILF cranks?

I'm sorry, I'll try to be more respectful as per the standards of noize board.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 17:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Changing Times, which will probably make my top 10; Morbs OTM in claimin git's a better film about colonialism than Caché.

Nice to see the kid from Nico & Dani all grows up.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 28 November 2006 17:47 (seventeen years ago) link

The Faculty might have been the last movie where Hartnett appeared to be awake most of the time.

milo (milo), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 17:49 (seventeen years ago) link

ballpoint pen drugs kept him alert

dmr, Tuesday, 28 November 2006 17:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh – and nothing wrong with watching films piecemeal; it's good for digestion.

Alfred Soto (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 17:54 (seventeen years ago) link

RHYTHM is broken, tho (unless there's none to be had)

Bill Weber (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 17:58 (seventeen years ago) link

sometimes a bro has to take a leak

deep space nine (deep space nine), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 18:59 (seventeen years ago) link

I define piecemeal as over days, not pausing for leak

"ILF crank" = dares to find any fault with a film the indie-media poobahs (or Rotten Tomatoes) have decreed a masterpiece

Dr M (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 19:04 (seventeen years ago) link

I also take my leaks piecemeal.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 19:04 (seventeen years ago) link

the indie-media poobahs? like... zinesters?

indymedia.org?

Pausing to pour wine, cook dinner, and answer the phone should count too!

^ADD^

Bill Weber (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 20:18 (seventeen years ago) link

tenacious d movie is 6 years late.

this is cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 20:20 (seventeen years ago) link

w thewliss?

yeah i saw it in 93 but this time through on dvd i could go back and replay parts with difficult dialogue (for a non-brit). almost a perfect film, i would have liked another actor playing the landlord.

spaghetti occidentali ( Spaghetti Occidentali), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 20:21 (seventeen years ago) link

i liked little children: dream-like and compassionate and i laughed a lot (especially at the narration which was so left field as to be totally wtf every time it happened).

jhoshea (jhoshea), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 20:24 (seventeen years ago) link

I guess I've learned to filter out the "liberal b.s." parts of movies nowadays. If you can get past that, Half Nelson is v. enjoyable. Never seen any of Gosling's other movies...but he wasn't the only one doing a good job in this one, why does he get all the attention?

yawn @ cutty

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 20:34 (seventeen years ago) link

I think Shareeka Epps is getting attention. She was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 20:35 (seventeen years ago) link

Anyway, isn't Half Nelson partially about the failures of liberalism?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 20:37 (seventeen years ago) link

I suppose it's trying to be.

Bill Weber (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 20:40 (seventeen years ago) link

I though it was about a teacher who acts like a rock star, basically.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 21:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh holy shit, young Ryan Gosling looks EXACTLY like ilxor Cprek circa 1994. EXACTLY.

nklshs (nklshs), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 21:09 (seventeen years ago) link

has there been a convincing schoolteacher drama, EVER? that French one 3-4 years ago? (Armond White argues for Jon Voight in Conrack, which I've never seen) Can young Ms Epps sing "To Sir with Love"?

Dr M (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 21:21 (seventeen years ago) link

dean would tell you school of rock is convincing

this is cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 21:22 (seventeen years ago) link

My gf turned to each other at the end of the History Boys trailer and were like "Dead Poets Society much?"

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 21:27 (seventeen years ago) link

well, apparently History Boys brings buggery to the fore

Bill Weber (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 21:29 (seventeen years ago) link
