Hi! N/A I didn't remember you were at that cmj show! I am probably free by 630 or 7 on sat.

tehresa, Wednesday, 7 December 2011 22:15 (twelve years ago) link

I believe if a small group gets there around 6 PM ish on Saturday, getting a table shouldn't be too difficult.

Bear in mind, I am often wrong.

I would be willing to be part of the drunken vanguard.

jenny, i loved fingersmith--i should read more sarah waters. i keep thinking i shld read tipping the velvet and then i keep forgetting. (the bbc series for that one is great fun, saw it yrs ago so i won't remember the plot enough to spoil the book)

i'm in a rut, alteranting btw trashy YA fiction and literary short stories. victorian lesbian fun might help.

julia, Thursday, 8 December 2011 02:53 (twelve years ago) link

You say the BBC series for Fingersmith or for Tipping the Velvet? Because I will watch all the BBC serieseses for all of her books forever.

This book has all the delights of a Victorian novel. I feel kind of old and jaded and unable to be surprised by plot twists but I've been totally taken off guard about four times by this book. Also Victorian lesbians = A++.

i'm in a reading blank spot right now, not sure what i feel like reading. downloaded a history of WWII last night but it might be too grim.

Hey not to take over all planning but re: Sat night at the Fountainhead (is this even okay w/ tza?), please think about your availability and confirm your attendance by Sat afternoon so I can give them a reasonably accurate estimate when Jeff and I arrive and start binge drinking around 6.

thejenny, Thursday, 8 December 2011 18:29 (twelve years ago) link

Ha, are you back on the bottle?

jaymc, Thursday, 8 December 2011 18:29 (twelve years ago) link

Yes!

thejenny, Thursday, 8 December 2011 18:31 (twelve years ago) link

I have a perpetual bottle.

Jeff, Thursday, 8 December 2011 18:33 (twelve years ago) link

Either I or Sarah and I (in shifts) should be attending - I think one of us can probably get there earlyish as well, maybe not right at 6 but earlyish.

n/a, Thursday, 8 December 2011 18:35 (twelve years ago) link

i will share that bottle with you, d may or may not come
count me in at least

league of women voters, Thursday, 8 December 2011 18:35 (twelve years ago) link

Tell d if he comes I will play mad Carcassonne with him the whole time.

thejenny, Thursday, 8 December 2011 18:37 (twelve years ago) link

jenny, i meant the tipping the velvet BBC series. so entertaining.

between my silliness and short story reading, i'm reading a novel that's good but kind of slow at times. for my ridic attn span, anyway. red on red--crime fiction that isn't so genre-y, more character based and less actiony. i keep checking out the ebook again and again because i'm too scrambled to read much of it at times but want to keep reading.

julia, Thursday, 8 December 2011 18:38 (twelve years ago) link

I and/or Sara will probably be up for some fountainhead, especially since it's across the street. However, I'm working on Saturday so I might end up getting there a bit later on...

well in (advance johnson), Thursday, 8 December 2011 19:52 (twelve years ago) link

Can Taco come?

Where is Terehsa staying?

Sandbox Jesse, Thursday, 8 December 2011 20:05 (twelve years ago) link

R and I went to a beer tasting/beer talk gathering for a charity she's involved with last night at Hopleaf. Besides the tasty beerz and interesting factz we learned that Hopleaf is expanding, basically doubling in size, taking over the space adjacent to them to the south.

tumblr whineys (Cuauhtemoc Blanco), Thursday, 8 December 2011 20:28 (twelve years ago) link

Interesting. I may be going to H'leaf on Sunday.

jaymc, Thursday, 8 December 2011 20:46 (twelve years ago) link

I'm reading Andrew Earles' book on Husker Du, which is like terribly disappointing. For one thing, he couldn't get Mould to take part (which, can't fault Earles for that since Mould was writing a book of his own), so there's a whole lot of "blah blah said that Bob said" stuff that makes me uncomfortable. Additionally, its just really awkward reading in general. Each and every time he talks about a peripheral person, he describes them by full name every time, like "tour soundman John Smith" and three paragraphs later, "so thought tour soundman John Smith". And there have been more than a couple places where nearly word-for-word paragraphs have been repeated at various points.

Anyway, I'm disappointed because I've really been wanting to learn more about Husker Du and there seems be a lot of interesting things to say about them, this book just isn't cutting it.

you should just listen to tons of husker du!!

league of women voters, Thursday, 8 December 2011 20:57 (twelve years ago) link

did you read the grunge oral history? you should read that instead, it's fun.

n/a, Thursday, 8 December 2011 20:58 (twelve years ago) link

listening to a shit ton of husker du will be way more entertaining than reading that book, promise

league of women voters, Thursday, 8 December 2011 20:59 (twelve years ago) link

I am listening to tons of them! This week has been full of pre-Zen Arcade stuff, which is the era I always kinda ignored.

That grunge oral history is on my list, probably get to it after Electric Eden which is currently on deck.

I left my login in El Sandboxo, Thursday, 8 December 2011 21:01 (twelve years ago) link

would you guys agree that husker du is "humorless"?

n/a, Thursday, 8 December 2011 21:01 (twelve years ago) link

no

league of women voters, Thursday, 8 December 2011 21:02 (twelve years ago) link

Bob Mould seems to be so from all his interviews from the band's heyday, but I don't think the band as a whole was humorless. I mean, they used to cover the Gilligan's Island and Mary Tyler Moore themes live! If anything, we can shift some blame of the ubiquitous "ironic" cover song to them, but I don't think they were devoid of humor.

I left my login in El Sandboxo, Thursday, 8 December 2011 21:05 (twelve years ago) link

how to skin a cat is funny

league of women voters, Thursday, 8 December 2011 21:07 (twelve years ago) link

the baby song is terrible, and not very funny, but an attempt at humor?

league of women voters, Thursday, 8 December 2011 21:08 (twelve years ago) link

Electric Eden will take you like 100 years to read, prepare :)

league of women voters, Thursday, 8 December 2011 21:09 (twelve years ago) link

I thought the Replacements "invented" the "ironic" cover song with their cover of Kiss's "Black Diamond."

jaymc, Thursday, 8 December 2011 21:10 (twelve years ago) link

psssshhh, which band covered Steely Dan, Van Halen and Creedence Clearwater Revival?

William (C), Thursday, 8 December 2011 21:13 (twelve years ago) link

on the same album?

league of women voters, Thursday, 8 December 2011 21:42 (twelve years ago) link

i can't listen to that right now but i only found out this morning from ned's this mortal coil review on pitchfork that they made a cover of "you and your sister" by chris bell (ex-big star) featuring vocals by kim deal and tanya donnelley, which is total sarah-bait

n/a, Thursday, 8 December 2011 21:45 (twelve years ago) link

it's a pretty lullaby btw

i like that chris bell song but it's not "speed of sound" (my favorite chris bell song)

league of women voters, Thursday, 8 December 2011 21:45 (twelve years ago) link

still sounds good though! anything with kim deal is good.

league of women voters, Thursday, 8 December 2011 21:46 (twelve years ago) link

it's a pretty straight cover but it's a great song and i like kim deal singing anything

n/a, Thursday, 8 December 2011 21:47 (twelve years ago) link

did chris bell or alex chilton write "thirteen"? because "you and your sister" is pretty similar to "thirteen" to my ears

n/a, Thursday, 8 December 2011 21:48 (twelve years ago) link

i thought it was chilton but you're right
huh

league of women voters, Thursday, 8 December 2011 21:59 (twelve years ago) link

I've never heard Chris Bell's "Speed of Sound," but I'm going to go ahead and assert that Coldplay's "Speed of Sound" is better.

jaymc, Thursday, 8 December 2011 22:14 (twelve years ago) link

Actually, I recently learned that Coldplay's "Speed of Sound" was musically inspired by Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill"!
