Tilda Swinton as White Witch was the least wtf casting ever.

I'm not sure what it was about that movie, it looked good and was well acted and stayed true to the story, but it was just so BORING.

Finally saw Brokeback Mountain, it is well made but I wasn't in the mood or something. Ang Lee, are you trying to drive people to suicide with your dour movies? Even Hulk was over-the-top heart-breaking.

i keep meaning to rent Narnia, but I can't help but think it'll just be really boring, especially on my small-ass TV.

In the book she's a drag queen! Swinton plays it like Grace Kelly.

Alfred Soto (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 11 December 2006 19:33 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah nickalicious is OTM on the boring

Jessie the Monster (scarymonster), Monday, 11 December 2006 19:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Tilda already played a drag queen in Constantine, tho!

David RER (Frank Fiore), Monday, 11 December 2006 19:34 (seventeen years ago) link

dmr (dmr), Monday, 11 December 2006 19:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Dragons (per the previous FAQ answer) (nklshs), Monday, 11 December 2006 19:43 (seventeen years ago) link

"or whatever"

grbchv! (gbx), Monday, 11 December 2006 19:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Watched The Fountain, so-so.

Is it just me or did that Narnia movie have a really bad score? I remember thinking that it sucked when I saw it in the theater and some girl I met was saying how she really liked it.

mh (mike h.), Monday, 11 December 2006 19:47 (seventeen years ago) link

if you are watching the Wire watch the Western first, and then, Rashomon, I'd say.
the DVD commentary on the second-to-last episode of wire season 3 opens with talk about how much they love westerns (I think it was pelecanos that was talking) & the face off between omar and brother mouzone was directly inspired by this.

dar1a g (dar1a g), Monday, 11 December 2006 20:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Swinton plays it like Grace Kelly.

WTF?

"sembene hasn't made too many films.. not surprising for african filmmaker b/c so hard to get funding & lack of infrastructure etc. I recommend xala, though. it's pretty good. funny."

Yeah, part of the extra ws an interview w/Sembene and at one point he talked about all this..I'll search Xala.

More films: Metropolis and Don't come knocking

You are right to doubt that.

deep space nine (deep space nine), Wednesday, 13 December 2006 06:59 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah the doc is bad, it'd be funny to see a fan of the movie watch it tho. (i've never actually seen the movie.)

MAP (mattp), Wednesday, 13 December 2006 07:05 (seventeen years ago) link

My not-too-bright rockstar ex loved that movie. I always suspected it was overrated.

Bird People In China - quirky, wistful stuff from Miike
Tomie - dopey dud, don't bother, heard the sequel's better

omg i want to see pan's labyrinth

(re: moving out...yeah, well, i'd love to. his taste in movies/music/everything is pretty atrocious across the board...not so much because it's deliberately bad, but because he doesn't really care. ask him what he's listening to in his room, and he'll have no idea. "just some mp3s" etc. but i'm stuck)

Alfred Soto (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 December 2006 20:39 (seventeen years ago) link

you've been waiting to drop that one, admit it

hank s1ockli (hanks1ockli), Wednesday, 13 December 2006 20:40 (seventeen years ago) link

I mean, really, Armond White: "[Stone] chooses to enlighten us about American character. Avoiding action-movie exploitation and specious docu-drama engenders absolute respect" is bilge.

Alfred Soto (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 December 2006 20:44 (seventeen years ago) link

well i wouldn't go that far. but i thought wtc was way better than it had any right to be, all things considered. i mean given that it's an incredibly sappy disaster movie. directed by oliver stone. about 9/11.

hank s1ockli (hanks1ockli), Wednesday, 13 December 2006 20:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Boondock Saints is pretty amusing for being a retarded vigilante fantasy flick.

elmo albatross (allocryptic), Wednesday, 13 December 2006 20:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Stone is neuteured without paranoid histori-political horseshit.

Alfred Soto (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 December 2006 21:00 (seventeen years ago) link

I think I'd almost prefer a neutered Stone to an overly priapic (sic) Stone.

David RER (Frank Fiore), Wednesday, 13 December 2006 21:06 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah would you prefer alexander??

hank s1ockli (hanks1ockli), Wednesday, 13 December 2006 21:45 (seventeen years ago) link

just don't be such an auteur ho and pretend somebody else directed it for a second

hank s1ockli (hanks1ockli), Wednesday, 13 December 2006 21:46 (seventeen years ago) link

i love how armond white is oh so concerned with the 'absolute respect' when his hero oliver has proven he has no second thoughts about going after most-definitely innocent people who can't defend themselves anymore in order to prove his point (cf: clay shaw in 'jfk'). obv the fictional character of shaw is almost hilarious enough to forgive this.

deep space nine (deep space nine), Wednesday, 13 December 2006 21:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Any time I've been prompted to explain why Boondock Saints is wretched I usually am at a loss for words and throw my hands in the air and walk away.

mh (mike h.), Wednesday, 13 December 2006 22:59 (seventeen years ago) link

oh give it a shot anyway.

i sort of want to watch it w/roomie now, for the EXPERIENCE

grbchv! (gbx), Wednesday, 13 December 2006 23:02 (seventeen years ago) link

It has absolutely ruined discount DVD bin shopping with its overwhelming omnipresence. I am tempted to buy thousands of copies just to destroy them and return balance to the discount bin.

Dragons (per the previous FAQ answer) (nklshs), Wednesday, 13 December 2006 23:05 (seventeen years ago) link

you do NOT want to watch boondock saints. i'm serious about this.

The Science of Sleep. Here it is, what I wrote on my listology entry: "creativity as passive-agressiveness, ugly-beautiful leading femme so as not to distract from directorial preciousness ... my companion noted this was essentially Amelie With a Dick, but since that dick is attached to Gael GarcĂa Bernal, who I've never before thought was charismatic like this, I allowed myself to hit the snooze alarm a couple times, at least early on."

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 14 December 2006 05:21 (seventeen years ago) link
