There was a huge snow here right before my first day of work at my first Chicago job (not this one) after moving here. I was freaking out because I didn't hear from them and had no way of knowing if the office would be closed. So I finally dug out the car. I called them on my way in to say I was on my way and would be a few minutes late, thinking I they would send me back home. Instead, I was completely shocked to be told rather abruptly to never let it happen again.

s'ok, Kenan. I have an amazing view out the front doors here.

Huh, I guess UIC closed.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:19 (seventeen years ago) link

i get to leave 59 minutes early but that doesn't help me since that means i can leave at the exact time the bus departs the front of the campus (7-10 minute walk from here). without traffic or weather delays that would mean i'd get home 10-15 minutes early. so i'm guessing i'll get home around 7-ish.

you should raise a stink about this

Bodhisattva, let me take you by the hand (kenan), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:26 (seventeen years ago) link

I would just go 15 minutes early, and catch the bus. Fuck em!

danno martinez (danno martinez), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:30 (seventeen years ago) link

i was going to dan but then i realized there's no way in hell the bus will be on time today. so i'll probably wind up waiting outside an extra 15 minutes.

One can divide people (who drive) into 2 categories: those who have nowhere to be on a day like today and think, "WOW! I'm not getting near my car until springtime." And then there are those of us who wish that they had a car to go for a spin in this mess. I can think of 3 people in this category, including myself.

Take sides?

Metrosexual Healing (crunkleJ), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Jesse, what do we call this category? Reckless? Dangerous? Unwise?

Bodhisattva, let me take you by the hand (kenan), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:36 (seventeen years ago) link

I admit it: I oversteered the car a few times this morning to make it slide, and I whipped a little shitty turning around in the alley.

I am very afraid of other drivers, however, especially those with all their windows covered in snow/frost.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Only people who do not have a car could ever want to go for a drive right now. It's a fantasy.

Bodhisattva, let me take you by the hand (kenan), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Um. If it wasn't for the insane amount of slow moving traffic, I would love to go for a ride.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:38 (seventeen years ago) link

in high school we used to go to the parking lots at the high school and have motorized snowball fights using our cars. the parking lot was a 5 or 6 tiered outdoor thing that had plenty of room. long enough where you could get the car up to about 45-50 mph then slam on the brakes and e-brake and cut the wheel as far as it would go to go into a spin. and hopefully not spin down the embankment to the next lower tier.

actually this is it, if this link works.

chicago kevin is back in a new york groove (chicago kevin), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:39 (seventeen years ago) link

xpost Not having other people on the road is part of the fantasy.

Bodhisattva, let me take you by the hand (kenan), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:40 (seventeen years ago) link

ok, for my own feat of nuttiness, i'm going to put a camera in my pocket and go for a walk on the "beach".

Bodhisattva, let me take you by the hand (kenan), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Who said anything about going fast? That's dangerous. You're mistaking honest enjoyment of driving for hooliganism.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:43 (seventeen years ago) link

My thoughts on the weather (the last time I shall speak on this subject):

I love the cold. I enjoyed the cold temps over the last few weeks. Today isn't ideal, but it's still pretty neat. I have ample coat, layers, tall waterproof boots, so my comfort level isn't decreasing that much.

I don't like oppressive heat at all. I don't like sweating. I am uncomfortable walking around with anything over 83 degrees. There are only so many clothes you can strip down to.

The only thing I don't like about the cold is the absence of the outdoor activities of spring and early summer.

Jeff... (Jeff...), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:43 (seventeen years ago) link

I think trying to drive in a snowstorm at all is borderline hooliganism.

Bodhisattva, let me take you by the hand (kenan), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:45 (seventeen years ago) link

whatevs, dan, i know you can drive in the snow. you go ahead.

with jesse, it really would be a deathtrap, though.

Bodhisattva, let me take you by the hand (kenan), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:48 (seventeen years ago) link

That's nice! It's good know what other people think.

Hahah, XP.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:48 (seventeen years ago) link

So is walking though. :-(

Calico (calico), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Haha my friend Shawn just sent me an email, the subject line of which read: "Me getting stuck in snow today @ lunch" and the entire body of the message was "Embarassing..." and this picture:

Those UP stories... I mean, you never know...

Calico (calico), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Hahaha! It's partially referential humor, we watched ESB the other night.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:56 (seventeen years ago) link

And with that, I am gonna go brave the roads. Don't worry, Kenan!

danno martinez (danno martinez), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:57 (seventeen years ago) link

ok, there's a car outside my window trying to un-parallel park, and is stuck. I am smiling about this. DON'T DRIVE TODAY, GENIUS.

Bodhisattva, let me take you by the hand (kenan), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:57 (seventeen years ago) link

xpost, except for dan. dan gets to drive. alone on the roads.

Bodhisattva, let me take you by the hand (kenan), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:58 (seventeen years ago) link

I had to drive this morning because I realized that I had parked on Ashland overnight, which is usually fine except on days when there's more than 2 inches of snow.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 21:05 (seventeen years ago) link

I made it to class with a minimum of pain. I am about to go reexperience the pain to get home. I have told Worker Justice, Inc. to cram it with walnuts. I have also discovered, much to my dismay, that my boots are not quite as waterproof as one might wish. :(

Goodbye forever.

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 21:06 (seventeen years ago) link

Goodbye.

I'm reading Nylon magazine online.

I bought a bed frame the other day and I have a gigantic crush on the girl who sold it to me. Hitting on retail employees seems automatically crepey though?

JordanC (JordanC), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 21:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Just...do it outside of work hours? Leave a msg for after her shift or something. I dunno how exactly to work out the details. But hitting on someone while they're in public/on the clock/visible to their employers is pretty awkward for them.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 21:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Laurel OTM. I also feel like retail workers would automatically be irritated by flirting from people they would in other circumstances be more open to, just given the nature of retail work.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 21:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Calico (calico), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 22:04 (seventeen years ago) link

I remember when I was little being paid to shovel people's driveways. I bet I was really slow and did a crappy job. I usually got hot chocolate though.

Calico (calico), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 22:04 (seventeen years ago) link
