Is Neu 4 objectively bad or is it just because we have prejudices towards the synth sounds on it?

neu! 4 just doesnt quite work for me. i may be prejudiced by other people implying itd be crap to my hears, but... id be hard pressed to say, objectively, there was any really significant flaw or bad idea...theres just a certain ehhh-ness, imHo xpost...

bb (bbia), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 18:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Yea, its not 10000x awful, but I've heard some people try to say the same kind of shit about post-Ege Bamyasi Can... that is fucking mental.

jw (ex machina), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 18:23 (seventeen years ago) link

>roxy music BBC sessions

Thank You Haitch

a lot of the initial wave of bad reviews for Neu! 4 has to do with that it was a $27 japanese import -- the record itself is merely mediocre with occasional moments of nearly-okay, but paying that much for it, taking it home and pressing play, that was a bummer. now that people have been objectively freed from having to pay for anything, the kids can hear things as they Really Are

Thomas Dinger's Fur Mich is better though. And I love the first four Rother / Jaki / Conny records.

milton parker (milton parker), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 19:07 (seventeen years ago) link

still want to hear some of the 1-A Dusseldorf records, have a feeling they could be better than la! NEU?

I say the latter...it is a bit goofy, but those electro-dance Neu! synth jams are pretty damn fun.

dan selzer (dan selzer), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 20:34 (seventeen years ago) link

i like it. Neu 4 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> most of Rother's solo jizz at least

amon (amon), Thursday, 7 December 2006 01:35 (seventeen years ago) link

madness

milton parker (milton parker), Thursday, 7 December 2006 01:37 (seventeen years ago) link

he put out quite a bit of really bad new age shit

amon (amon), Thursday, 7 December 2006 01:53 (seventeen years ago) link

well it's definitely true, I can't stick up for anything after 1982... i.e. you're totally right that by now the majority of his solo stuff is 100% dinky Fairlight presets. and he litters the CD issues of the first four with new remixes where he replaces his guitars with more bad synths.

if a Rother album says 'Jaki Liebzeit' and 'Recorded at Conny's' on the back cover, though, I'm not going to take that off to listen to Neu fucking 4

milton parker (milton parker), Thursday, 7 December 2006 02:08 (seventeen years ago) link

if a Rother album says 'Jaki Liebzeit' and 'Recorded at Conny's'

ysi? -_-

amon (amon), Thursday, 7 December 2006 04:33 (seventeen years ago) link

and it's cool to hear Jaki Liebezeit play motorik beats too

Dominique (dleone), Thursday, 7 December 2006 05:05 (seventeen years ago) link

'Recorded at Conny's' = crucial

Michael Rother - KM 10

I didn't like Katzenmusik the first time I heard it, wasn't weird enough. I love it now, but the album to start with is Flammende Herzen which is basically an entire album-long expansion of the first two tracks from Harmonia Deluxe. I love that record too much. If you like that one, then you'll want the next three. & skip that Chronicles compilation on Hypnotic, it focuses on the later stuff.

milton parker (milton parker), Thursday, 7 December 2006 06:13 (seventeen years ago) link

just skipped through Neu! 4 again. it's got some fun parts if you're a fan.

one more word about the later Rother albums -- when I saw the Rother / Frusciante / Klinghoffer trio two years back, they played a lot of stuff from the later albums with dual guitars & drums instead of Fairlight presets, and suddenly the later tunes were just as great as the early stuff. I was doing sound work the first night & saw the soundcheck, which was the only rehearsal -- at the end of 'Silberstreif' Rother said 'when we play this tonight, we could stay on the last chord for a while?' and that was it, when they played the song they took that one chord out for close to ten minutes, and it was pretty much like getting to see Neu! live

Frusciante nailed the his parts, too, obviously had the albums memorized, nothing but respect for him after that show.

that 'women take back the noise' compilation is pretty great, disc 1 in particular. go to 0:40 if you want to skip the ad and just see the circuit bent noise cookie that comes with every copy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-S5CInIc0g
