Lamb - "Butterfly Effect"

I am wholly obsessed with this song and think everyone should love and adore it

OH NOES, Wednesday, 7 December 2011 16:32 (twelve years ago) link

xp ok that is next-level; I was thinking about voting for Nyan Cat anyways, but there's def room in my ballot for that

anyways

this is probably my favorite country song of the last five years

acid mothers against drunk driving (henrietta lacks), Wednesday, 7 December 2011 16:36 (twelve years ago) link

I just finished listening to that song... I wasn't feeling it at all, but country usually has an uphill battle to win my affections

OH NOES, Wednesday, 7 December 2011 16:39 (twelve years ago) link

Just finished listening to the Lamb album. So good.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 7 December 2011 16:47 (twelve years ago) link

From Shiina Ringo's Carnation EP, this song works in the vein of her more upbeat material on her Sanmon Gossip album, but I think it's better than any of those songs--plus it pulls in some Jihenesque vibe, especially with the piano, which I'm assuming is played by Izawa. The little J-pop kitten vocals don't bother me in this context, though I could see how they might be a deal breaker for some people. The classical intro. doesn't last long. (Why so few views? Probably the only information is in Japanese.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34BVyR0K_9c

And I like this more and think it has more going on than "Heaven" (though I do like Heaven as well). I only know Sande via ILM.

Occidental Rudipherous, Wednesday, 7 December 2011 17:30 (twelve years ago) link

Lyrically, Heaven just hits me harder. Also, full on "Funky Drummer" loop puts it over the top.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 7 December 2011 17:52 (twelve years ago) link

I don't generally pay much attention to lyrics (I certainly don't care much about whatever the story of "Daddy" is) and I was never a Massive Attack fan (which might be a shame, because I think maybe I would have liked them at the time--I just don't remember knowingly hearing them even, when they were current).

Occidental Rudipherous, Wednesday, 7 December 2011 18:17 (twelve years ago) link

I'm copying a hoy hoy's Spotify list of nominated tracks over here:

http://open.spotify.com/user/sutrarama/playlist/6XPqCUpc4QNEbpubiLr1eA

So far, I've only encountered one song I've disliked (Sunny Sweeney)

OH NOES, Wednesday, 7 December 2011 18:30 (twelve years ago) link

Best new thing I've heard so far on the playlist is Ada's Happy Birthday, love those electronic bird noises. I also really like the Fucked Up song (why did no one tell me they sounded like Andrew WK?) and Konshens' Nuh Pull It Up is a thing of wonder.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 7 December 2011 19:05 (twelve years ago) link

Nadia Oh just blew my mind apart

OH NOES, Wednesday, 7 December 2011 19:07 (twelve years ago) link

This track really took Aeroplane crown (and like other Plastic Plates remixes, has prominently featured in the Magicians Magic Tape mix series):

Social Studies - Body Language (Plastic Plates Remix)

Sanpaku, Wednesday, 7 December 2011 19:31 (twelve years ago) link

Er, that's the track "Social Studies" (Plastic Plates rmx) by Body Language.

Sanpaku, Wednesday, 7 December 2011 19:33 (twelve years ago) link

Why Even Try > Flying Overseas -- but there's been a noticeable Theophilus London ambivalence on ILM in the past, so I'm not even going to nominate it.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 7 December 2011 21:15 (twelve years ago) link

Not a lot between those tracks but Solange Knowles > Sara Quinn, so Flying Overseas gets this judges decision.

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 7 December 2011 21:21 (twelve years ago) link

I'd skipped the David Lynch thing until now, but that track (which I'm currently jamming to in Spotify) is GREAT.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 7 December 2011 21:38 (twelve years ago) link

I just want to say that anyone who hasn't heard Boy Better Know's Tropical 2 should do so, even if they don't like dance music, or even if they don't like music. It's boss!

okay I am turning into a for-real Wiz Khalifa fan

Lamb - "Butterfly Effect"

I am wholly obsessed with this song and think everyone should love and adore it

― OH NOES

This is amazing, is the rest of the album as good?

Kitchen Person, Friday, 9 December 2011 13:21 (twelve years ago) link

Almost! The Lamb album is surprisingly good.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 9 December 2011 13:32 (twelve years ago) link

Another great song from the Lamb album 5 called "She Walks":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfXHYjJmLpQ

Most of the album (5)is firmly in the moody atmospheric downtempo realm. "Butterfly Effect" is IMO a standout track but I really do love the entire album; they manage to express a bunch of different moods/emotions within the sonic palette they're playing with, with a couple of minor detours into more guitar-oriented tracks. They continue to work the angle of icy-warm comfort that they've played with throughout their entire career, setting themselves up as a counterpoint to Portishead's paranoia exercises.

OH NOES, Friday, 9 December 2011 16:01 (twelve years ago) link

lol, did I mention that the album is called 5?

OH NOES, Friday, 9 December 2011 16:04 (twelve years ago) link

I'm a big fan of "Build A Fire" too. Great video for that as well.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 9 December 2011 16:19 (twelve years ago) link

ha "Build A Fire" was the other one I debated posting, just for contrast

OH NOES, Friday, 9 December 2011 16:22 (twelve years ago) link

The "Butterfly Effect"/"Build A Fire" back to back kills me.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 9 December 2011 16:41 (twelve years ago) link

She Walks is good too, maybe not as brilliant as Butterfly Effect but definitely good enough to make me want to listen to the album before voting.

I really don't know much about them, I remember Gorecki from a while back but not much else.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 9 December 2011 17:37 (twelve years ago) link

Their self-titled debut and Fear of Fours are definitely required listening. I also love the new one and what I remember of What Sound was really good. Between Darkness and Wonder has a few moments but is mostly forgettable.

OH NOES, Friday, 9 December 2011 17:39 (twelve years ago) link

What Sound is my favorite.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 9 December 2011 17:42 (twelve years ago) link

Lamb is one of my favorite groups from my post-college days so I was super super stoked to see them reform and release another album and even more stoked that it was fucking excellent.

OH NOES, Friday, 9 December 2011 17:44 (twelve years ago) link

I first heard Lamb on my honeymoon in Portugal; as a result, I have extra love for Fear Of Fours and can't evaluate it with any impartiality.

Matt DC, Saturday, 10 December 2011 11:42 (twelve years ago) link

think I'm gonna try my best and advertise some of my noms here:

Pase Rock - Nights (Shazam Remix)

Another great remix from Shazam (check his remix of Munk's "Down in LA", too). Digi-funk, synth-r'n'b, something along those lines. Basically something a Lex or Tim F would like (I think). Sounds wonderfully melancholic, like a walk through the city center after the rain. Synths go in and go out, letting gusts of fresh air into the mix.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptPBccFY9mI

Class Actress - Keep You

I always kinda wanted that The Knife's "Heartbeat" would have a bit better bass in the beginning (which always sounds BIGGER in my head than it really is) and this song kinda caters for my dreams. A really solid electro-pop single with a powerful chorus. Doesn't reach nowhere near the emotional intensity of aforementioned classic, but still makes an entertaining listen.

sean doily, Thursday, 15 December 2011 00:59 (twelve years ago) link

I don't know how much play this is getting outside of Latin music contexts, but I hope people will check this out if they haven't heard it. Not a great song but the first large-scale mainstream manifestation I know of for tribal guarachero:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZ53Ho7cExE

I admit it looks more like an ad, which it sort of is for this particular style. I could live with this sound getting a lot more popular.

Occidental Rudipherous, Friday, 16 December 2011 19:22 (twelve years ago) link

Intentalo might be in my top five singles of the year.

ShariVari, Friday, 16 December 2011 19:29 (twelve years ago) link

A lot of these nominations sound like they could have fit into a radio set I would have been listening to in the 80s, and it kind of bugs me, mostly because I heard more than enough (characteristically) 80s music for one lifetime in the 80s.

Occidental Rudipherous, Saturday, 17 December 2011 02:55 (twelve years ago) link

Given some of my recent personal favorites, it's obviously not as though I have a principled need for the least retro sounding music. There's plenty of not very retro material I don't like.

Brad Nelson, Sunday, 18 December 2011 19:04 (twelve years ago) link

I'm liking the Fatima Al Qadiri EP, but wishing she would do something with khaleeji rhythms. (So far I haven't heard anything along those lines from her.) Sorry to be predictable.

sad that "snapped" doesn't seem to be the most popular jhene aiko track, i think it's stunning, like "marvin's room" from a slightly more mature perspective??? someone who is just as wounded but is much better at hiding it? (that's not supposed to be a knock on jojo's, which is my favorite track of the year)

Yall can sing along with this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7kcAaAu4jU

I was captive on a slave boat rowing through the swamp
they threw me off into the lake of alligators
eyes were glowing in the dark, and fear was in the air
as the beasts were closing in, panic struck my mind
swimming through the mud, yes I was swimming through the mud
and a thousand flamingos led my way,
riding to the feast for I was gonna meet my doom

Tonight a demon came into my head and tried to choke me in my sleep
Tonight a demon came into my head and tried to choke me in my sleep

There's more lyrics, but get real, you can't sing like Joakim Nilsson!!
