My prediction is that my most miserable day of the year will occur sometime in the end of July or beginning of August.

Thank you, Dan.

not possible.

I worry that I come off as a dick because I talk about how this weather doesn't bother me. But it's interesting, I see people's reactions to it as cultural differences, and finding out those differences is intriguing and enlightening. It makes want to take you all to the Yoop at this time of year, then again in late summer when it's at its most beautiful.

i can deal with heat, i've never been able to deal with winter. i hate the snow, i hate the cold, i hate it i hate it i hate it.

chicago kevin is back in a new york groove (chicago kevin), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 19:16 (seventeen years ago) link

dan, you're not even remotely a dick. you're right, we talk about the weather too much.

still. this weather is not good. the people on the weather channel seem to agree. "Nasty Weather in Chicago!"

This is perfect post-sauna jumping snow.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 19:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Dan, I grew up in the south, where a teeny tiny flurry would cause schools to shut down, offices to close, and a mad rush on the grocery stores.

Calico (calico), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 19:48 (seventeen years ago) link

That's just me though.

Hi.

Calico (calico), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 19:58 (seventeen years ago) link

you ever watch a guinness settle, where there's this one layer of bubbles going up, and this other layer going down? that's what it looks like out my window right now.

Bodhisattva, let me take you by the hand (kenan), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Take a pic of it (for us, I mean)!

Some interesting first names from the realtor emails I've been collecting:
Poppy
Matinee

And there are an amazing number of women with the first names D0RATA and IW0NA.

xposts Hi.

I have heard lots of similar stories from my grandparents (from VA) and my parents to a lesser extent. But, my mom lived in the area of NY that got 11 feet or whatever amount last week, too. I've never seen 11 feet fall in a week, ever. Maybe 5 feet. It's such a pain in the ass to deal with, but you do it.

My cousin has a theory that people from places that get a lot of snow have evolved different work ethics because of growing up having to do things like shovel snow 2 or 3 times a day and just deal with the inconveniences it causes. Who knows if it's true or not.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Winter is more tolerable at night, and summer is more tolerable during the day. During the winter, you can always crank the radiators and put on a ton of blankets when you're trying to sleep, but during the summer, if you're stripped down to nothing and have the fan on full-blast and are still sweating, then there is no hope. Conversely, walking around your neighborhood when it's 90 is only mildly uncomfortable, but doing so in 0 degree weather is downright painful, and having to brush off your car and get your socks wet trudging through snow is annoying.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:04 (seventeen years ago) link

High schoolers are scary.

JordanC (JordanC), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:05 (seventeen years ago) link

Take a pic of it (for us, I mean)!

I think it would just look like blurry snow. You had to be there.

Bodhisattva, let me take you by the hand (kenan), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:08 (seventeen years ago) link

There was a huge snow here right before my first day of work at my first Chicago job (not this one) after moving here. I was freaking out because I didn't hear from them and had no way of knowing if the office would be closed. So I finally dug out the car. I called them on my way in to say I was on my way and would be a few minutes late, thinking I they would send me back home. Instead, I was completely shocked to be told rather abruptly to never let it happen again.

s'ok, Kenan. I have an amazing view out the front doors here.

Calico (calico), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Huh, I guess UIC closed.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:19 (seventeen years ago) link

i get to leave 59 minutes early but that doesn't help me since that means i can leave at the exact time the bus departs the front of the campus (7-10 minute walk from here). without traffic or weather delays that would mean i'd get home 10-15 minutes early. so i'm guessing i'll get home around 7-ish.

chicago kevin is back in a new york groove (chicago kevin), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:23 (seventeen years ago) link

you should raise a stink about this

Bodhisattva, let me take you by the hand (kenan), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:26 (seventeen years ago) link

I would just go 15 minutes early, and catch the bus. Fuck em!

danno martinez (danno martinez), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:30 (seventeen years ago) link

i was going to dan but then i realized there's no way in hell the bus will be on time today. so i'll probably wind up waiting outside an extra 15 minutes.

chicago kevin is back in a new york groove (chicago kevin), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:32 (seventeen years ago) link

One can divide people (who drive) into 2 categories: those who have nowhere to be on a day like today and think, "WOW! I'm not getting near my car until springtime." And then there are those of us who wish that they had a car to go for a spin in this mess. I can think of 3 people in this category, including myself.

Take sides?

Metrosexual Healing (crunkleJ), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Jesse, what do we call this category? Reckless? Dangerous? Unwise?

Bodhisattva, let me take you by the hand (kenan), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:36 (seventeen years ago) link

I admit it: I oversteered the car a few times this morning to make it slide, and I whipped a little shitty turning around in the alley.

I am very afraid of other drivers, however, especially those with all their windows covered in snow/frost.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Only people who do not have a car could ever want to go for a drive right now. It's a fantasy.

Bodhisattva, let me take you by the hand (kenan), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Um. If it wasn't for the insane amount of slow moving traffic, I would love to go for a ride.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:38 (seventeen years ago) link

in high school we used to go to the parking lots at the high school and have motorized snowball fights using our cars. the parking lot was a 5 or 6 tiered outdoor thing that had plenty of room. long enough where you could get the car up to about 45-50 mph then slam on the brakes and e-brake and cut the wheel as far as it would go to go into a spin. and hopefully not spin down the embankment to the next lower tier.

actually this is it, if this link works.

chicago kevin is back in a new york groove (chicago kevin), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:39 (seventeen years ago) link

xpost Not having other people on the road is part of the fantasy.

Bodhisattva, let me take you by the hand (kenan), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:40 (seventeen years ago) link

ok, for my own feat of nuttiness, i'm going to put a camera in my pocket and go for a walk on the "beach".

Bodhisattva, let me take you by the hand (kenan), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Who said anything about going fast? That's dangerous. You're mistaking honest enjoyment of driving for hooliganism.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:43 (seventeen years ago) link

My thoughts on the weather (the last time I shall speak on this subject):

I love the cold. I enjoyed the cold temps over the last few weeks. Today isn't ideal, but it's still pretty neat. I have ample coat, layers, tall waterproof boots, so my comfort level isn't decreasing that much.

I don't like oppressive heat at all. I don't like sweating. I am uncomfortable walking around with anything over 83 degrees. There are only so many clothes you can strip down to.

The only thing I don't like about the cold is the absence of the outdoor activities of spring and early summer.

Jeff... (Jeff...), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:43 (seventeen years ago) link

I think trying to drive in a snowstorm at all is borderline hooliganism.

Bodhisattva, let me take you by the hand (kenan), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:45 (seventeen years ago) link

whatevs, dan, i know you can drive in the snow. you go ahead.

with jesse, it really would be a deathtrap, though.

Bodhisattva, let me take you by the hand (kenan), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:48 (seventeen years ago) link

That's nice! It's good know what other people think.

Hahah, XP.

Haha my friend Shawn just sent me an email, the subject line of which read: "Me getting stuck in snow today @ lunch" and the entire body of the message was "Embarassing..." and this picture:

Calico (calico), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Hahaha! It's partially referential humor, we watched ESB the other night.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:56 (seventeen years ago) link

danno martinez (danno martinez), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:57 (seventeen years ago) link

ok, there's a car outside my window trying to un-parallel park, and is stuck. I am smiling about this. DON'T DRIVE TODAY, GENIUS.

Bodhisattva, let me take you by the hand (kenan), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:57 (seventeen years ago) link

xpost, except for dan. dan gets to drive. alone on the roads.

Bodhisattva, let me take you by the hand (kenan), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:58 (seventeen years ago) link

I had to drive this morning because I realized that I had parked on Ashland overnight, which is usually fine except on days when there's more than 2 inches of snow.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 21:05 (seventeen years ago) link

I made it to class with a minimum of pain. I am about to go reexperience the pain to get home. I have told Worker Justice, Inc. to cram it with walnuts. I have also discovered, much to my dismay, that my boots are not quite as waterproof as one might wish. :(

Goodbye forever.

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 21:06 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm reading Nylon magazine online.
