actually now that I've thought about it I dont buy that they're hipster apples because I heard about it from some old ladies

Jazz are great, like a better version of a Pink Lady, but i don't see them in shops very much around here. Never seen a Honeycrisp, probably never will :(

Jazz apples have a hint of acetone flavor, I think.

We happened to be in Sebastopol (CA) once during the short Gravenstein season, and got a few at the farmer's market -- those were some game-changing apples right there.

Not sure I've noticed small Honeycrisps. Usually I just make a beeline for the Galas, though. I'm a man of habit.

northern spy is the best apple for pies (and can be kinda hard to find sometimes)

I used northern spy for my apple pie for thanksgiving, it was good

seemed pretty mushy when I was cutting it up though, I hate mushy apples

We used to give our patients a pink enema that was called "Pink Lady Enema" and that's how the MD's would order it. The pharmacy would make it up with a mixture of things, like mineral oil, but I don't know what made it pink!

jazz apples are a neat lil apple package. maybe they wouldn't be be such a good option if they were bigger, myabe the extra bites would expose some flaws, but they're just right the way they are, a perfect little apply window in your day.

surprised FUJIs only got one mention in this thread, they are a market leader imo. i never ate a honeycrisp. i don't like apples that look too much like cartoon apples, idk if i would be into arkansas black?

Ark Black has a thick peel which is sometimes a little bitter -- I always peel mine. But the inside is wonderful, really tart but balanced, not a punch in the mouth like Granny Smith.

Honey Crisp is one of the better widely-available apples, but a bit big, sugary, wet, and, as said above, engineered-feeling. Imo, the best cultivars for eating include the Mcintosh, Paula Red, Cortland, Macoun, Stayman-Winesap (what Red Delicious should taste like), Golden Russet, and York, while the best for pie-making are tarter green apples like the Rhode Island Greening and Newtown Pippin. These are all American, and primarily Northeastern.

But actually now I'm intrigued to try all these honeycrisps.

I finally had a honeycrisp this week. One expects the teeth to sink in palate deep, and then some resistance, but they glide right through a honeycrisp. Flavor was a bit less notable.

Wish I still lived in Madison, WI. There was a family orchard stand at the Saturday farmer's market proferring obscure Japanese cultivars that were amazing. I can't remember their names, but oh god were they good.

Honeycrisp does suprisingly well, placing third among commercial varieties tested (after winner Idared and 2nd place Red Delicious).

Bought a small tasting selection from my local trendy grocers. Pink Lady: a new one to me, pleasingly crisp and fresh, basically sweet, but not overpoweringly so. I like. Russet: also crisp, skin can be a bit rough which gives a somewhat disconcerting mouthfeel, but tastewise it's not predominantly sweet or tart - it just tastes like a fuckin' apple. Quintessence of apple. Coxes: always my favourite. Crisp again - fuck a soft apple imo - and a perfect balance of sweet and tart.

One of the best things about being in the UK vs the US is being able to get proper apples really easily and cheaply. It's been all about Windsor/Cox/Russet apples this autumn so far.
