I was pretty sure he was going to ramp up to serious spamming and mayhem later in the night, and thought about banning him before I went to bed, but it didn't seem right to preemptively ban someone for something I thought he was likely to do.

Posting porn over and over again in every thread on ILE is "being obnoxious, but no more so than half the people who post here regularly"?

yeah, i went to bed before then... he was just being annoying, and blatherskating about his exploits, and hadn't done anything out of the normal realm of irritating.

Stet, you are a gentleman and a scholar and I salute you, sir.

the quandary is it that if modding isn't done heavily/is mostly invisible/is saved for only the truly destructive eejits, something like his pr0n spam can/will happen from time.
if modding is done with a heavier hand, a lot of people end up pissed off and feeling that their right to post is trampled or freedom of speech is squelched, and take the mods to task for running an invisible empire or whatever.
I (and i think jjj and wmc, just to name a few) am far more inclined to intervene only in the rare cases where bad shit has actually happened or is imminantly going to go bonkers than in the suspicious instance where something may, tentatively, occur.
― remy bean in exile, Tuesday, 6 December 2011 20:03 (twelve years ago) link
sb isn't for spam or porn posts, mods are there for that, i mean this stuff has been clearly covered about 100 times even if you don't agree with it- mods'll still police the obvious bannable stuff

As far as hosting goes, I have no useful technical opinion to offer. I only know that I would like ILX to remain as uncluttered, free from advertising, and responsive as it is now. The database issue appears thorny, in that the data will only continue to grow and it's hard to define a non-arbitrary limit on searches.
My sense is that the ilx community could and would support out-of-pocket expenses up to a cost of approx $3,000/year, with occasional one-off expenses above this amount.

i would prefer it if all threads were left open to be bumped and updated, instead of closing and locking em.

threads could be deleted if & when the starter got sb'd tax @ source imo

Maybe another way to raise money could be the installation of a kind of tax on polls. I don't know what it could be called, though.

But a "poll tax" is completely different from a tax on polls!
― Aimless, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 03:23 (twelve years ago) link
No, it's exactly the same.
The basis for the poll tax was that every person eligible to vote would pay tax at the equal rate.

it would kill ilf if you had to pay for every 'wayne rooney v. a sheep' type of poll.

― schalke nult fear (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 20:26 (twelve years ago) link
The word poll is an English word that once meant "head" - and still does, in some specialised contexts - hence the name poll tax for a per-person tax. In the United States, however, the term has come to be used almost exclusively for a fixed tax applied to voting. Since "going to the polls" is a common idiom for voting (deriving from the fact that early voting involved head-counts), a new folk etymology has supplanted common knowledge of the phrase's true origins in America.

reg ILX "back by last night" eh
I'm sure stet is doing all he can, but I'd go conservative on the press releases.
― Dr Morbius, Thursday, 15 December 2011 15:06 (twelve years ago) link
Stet never said that. He said only that the Sandbox would be back by last night. Which it was.
― jaymc, Thursday, 15 December 2011 15:07 (twelve years ago) link
way I read it was that ILX was almost up, and until it came back up the Sandbox would be down
but that the Sandbox would be up by last night, so I thought there was an inference that ILX would be up even sooner

I too understood that regular ILX would be up by last night, and until then, the Sandbox would be down.
No worries, and definitely no complaints, but that is what I read.
― Sandbox Jesse, Thursday, 15 December 2011 15:20 (twelve years ago) link
but in the sentence construction the "it" directly refers to the sandbox...?

― bloating forecast: ruff swells (p much resigned to deems), Thursday, 15 December 2011 15:38 (twelve years ago) link
hah no worries. I mean I think it's just important to realize that
1) stet has a full-time job2) stet is sacrificing his valuable free time to both put the sandbox up and to get ILX back up3) status updates are just cherries on top
I mean, I jones just as much as the next ilxor when one or both are down but at the same time I'm not in the trenches rewriting the code! so it's all good
