we can never rest until the brutal shadow of the SB button has been lifted and people feel free to post their innermost thoughts again

Maybe Bartering Will Help (Julie Lagger), Tuesday, 6 December 2011 12:05 (twelve years ago) link

Well, it's neither one thing nor the other.

Anyway, thanks for the reasoned defence of it. I still would like it gone, but then that's my opinion.
I dunno if it needs a full debate, just .

or we can go on as we seem to be managing to do right now in perfect harmony xp

k3vin k., Tuesday, 6 December 2011 12:06 (twelve years ago) link

You guys just think there's no SB on the sandbox. I found the secret button and am SBing you all repeatedly right now.

Illia Rump (emil.y), Tuesday, 6 December 2011 12:12 (twelve years ago) link

That's the wrong button, you've got us all signed up for the Sugababes audition!

u r so mean! funny how such a bully would be in favor of a system designed to let ppl gang up on some1 & 'vote him off the island'

k3vin k., Tuesday, 6 December 2011 12:16 (twelve years ago) link

Mmm, interesting! Intense levels of sarcasm, but. (ref: that website)

Bela Lugosi's Derrida (MarkG oo la showaddywaddy), Tuesday, 6 December 2011 12:17 (twelve years ago) link

Anyway, to get back on topic - I'd love to help out but donation drives always seem to come at a bad time for me: either I'm off-board and they finish before I get there or they turn up when I'm skint. It would be good if we could open donations year-round, but I seem to remember there were tax/legal issues with this, right?

Illia Rump (emil.y), Tuesday, 6 December 2011 12:20 (twelve years ago) link

The drives were always open very briefly, and closed when the target was reached. In my time here, i've only managed to contrib to one!

Bela Lugosi's Derrida (MarkG oo la showaddywaddy), Tuesday, 6 December 2011 12:22 (twelve years ago) link

hooray for stet! hooray for more memory! otm'ing everyone who wants to be able to donate whenever.

also I hope that the ability to bump ancient threads doesn't get phased out in the interest of db performance, since that is like the most charming thing about ilx

silby, Tuesday, 6 December 2011 16:02 (twelve years ago) link

^^^

Christine 'Green Leafy Dragon' Indigo, Tuesday, 6 December 2011 16:20 (twelve years ago) link

yeah clearly u have to be able to bump, thats a given

Cooper Chucklebutt, Tuesday, 6 December 2011 16:31 (twelve years ago) link

In theory, if someone's just posting offensive crap or spam, 50 good and faithful ILXors should be able to point them out and the perp gets xored out.

otoh we had about 14 active users and no mods the morning Newgod arrived. sb failed us that morning. and all this "oh i've never banned anyone, i'm so special" bullshit is so fucking lame. spammers like newgod are in theory what it is there for and if i was the only fucking one pressing the button for 2 hours then ilx deserved to break.

anyway, post passive aggression, thx stet! i will try to contribute, even if it is a time of the year i have absolutely no £££

big popppa hoy, Tuesday, 6 December 2011 16:34 (twelve years ago) link

um, I wasn't saying I was "so special", I did caveat "nobody's upset me personally here"

Bela Lugosi's Derrida (MarkG oo la showaddywaddy), Tuesday, 6 December 2011 16:36 (twelve years ago) link

While I personally take a lot of satisfaction in repeatedly hitting SB on certain people just for the hell of it, you do know that it only counts once when you do it even if you sit there and hit it 200 times, right S?

ᶘ ᵒᴥᵒᶅ (~curious orange~), Tuesday, 6 December 2011 16:37 (twelve years ago) link

sb isn't really for spammers now, is it?

los krampusinos! (pomplamau5), Tuesday, 6 December 2011 16:39 (twelve years ago) link

I think that's the case or it was at one time at least.

ᶘ ᵒᴥᵒᶅ (~curious orange~), Tuesday, 6 December 2011 16:39 (twelve years ago) link

lol i meant i was the only person to do it in 2 hrs. (which i know isnt true.)

wmc and i were both around during newgod's tenure. he was being obnoxious, but no more so than half the people who post here regularly.

remy bean in exile, Tuesday, 6 December 2011 19:44 (twelve years ago) link

pretty sure half the people here don't make 100 threads every 5 minutes/?

smh, Tuesday, 6 December 2011 19:45 (twelve years ago) link

i must have left before that part

remy bean in exile, Tuesday, 6 December 2011 19:46 (twelve years ago) link

I was about to say.

ᶘ ᵒᴥᵒᶅ (~curious orange~), Tuesday, 6 December 2011 19:47 (twelve years ago) link

haha yeah, the whole of SNA was Newgod spew

los krampusinos! (pomplamau5), Tuesday, 6 December 2011 19:48 (twelve years ago) link

I was pretty sure he was going to ramp up to serious spamming and mayhem later in the night, and thought about banning him before I went to bed, but it didn't seem right to preemptively ban someone for something I thought he was likely to do.

William (C), Tuesday, 6 December 2011 19:49 (twelve years ago) link

Posting porn over and over again in every thread on ILE is "being obnoxious, but no more so than half the people who post here regularly"?

polyphonic, Tuesday, 6 December 2011 19:52 (twelve years ago) link

I think it's clear now that R didn't see that part.

ᶘ ᵒᴥᵒᶅ (~curious orange~), Tuesday, 6 December 2011 19:53 (twelve years ago) link

I wonder if newgod thinks he broke ILX

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 6 December 2011 19:53 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, i went to bed before then... he was just being annoying, and blatherskating about his exploits, and hadn't done anything out of the normal realm of irritating.

the quandary is it that if modding isn't done heavily/is mostly invisible/is saved for only the truly destructive eejits, something like his pr0n spam can/will happen from time.

if modding is done with a heavier hand, a lot of people end up pissed off and feeling that their right to post is trampled or freedom of speech is squelched, and take the mods to task for running an invisible empire or whatever.

I (and i think jjj and wmc, just to name a few) am far more inclined to intervene only in the rare cases where bad shit has actually happened or is imminantly going to go bonkers than in the suspicious instance where something may, tentatively, occur.

remy bean in exile, Tuesday, 6 December 2011 20:03 (twelve years ago) link

sb isn't for spam or porn posts, mods are there for that, i mean this stuff has been clearly covered about 100 times even if you don't agree with it- mods'll still police the obvious bannable stuff

Sad Banter (p much resigned to deems), Tuesday, 6 December 2011 20:23 (twelve years ago) link

As far as hosting goes, I have no useful technical opinion to offer. I only know that I would like ILX to remain as uncluttered, free from advertising, and responsive as it is now. The database issue appears thorny, in that the data will only continue to grow and it's hard to define a non-arbitrary limit on searches.

My sense is that the ilx community could and would support out-of-pocket expenses up to a cost of approx $3,000/year, with occasional one-off expenses above this amount.

Aimless, Tuesday, 6 December 2011 23:38 (twelve years ago) link

i would prefer it if all threads were left open to be bumped and updated, instead of closing and locking em.

max max max max, Wednesday, 7 December 2011 01:57 (twelve years ago) link

threads could be deleted if & when the starter got sb'd tax @ source imo

Sad Banter (p much resigned to deems), Wednesday, 7 December 2011 01:59 (twelve years ago) link

Maybe another way to raise money could be the installation of a kind of tax on polls. I don't know what it could be called, though.

Ed, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 03:13 (twelve years ago) link

But a "poll tax" is completely different from a tax on polls!

Aimless, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 03:23 (twelve years ago) link

No, it's exactly the same.

The basis for the poll tax was that every person eligible to vote would pay tax at the equal rate.

Jilted John and Marsha (MarkG oo la showaddywaddy), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 09:53 (twelve years ago) link

No, it's exactly the same.

Thank you! That's precisely what I was trying to say! (glances around guiltily)

Aimless, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 19:35 (twelve years ago) link

it would kill ilf if you had to pay for every 'wayne rooney v. a sheep' type of poll.

big popppa hoy, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 20:10 (twelve years ago) link

couldn't hurt ilm tho

― big popppa hoy, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 20:10 (14 minutes ago)

that's not a poll it's a court case

schalke nult fear (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 20:26 (twelve years ago) link

The word poll is an English word that once meant "head" - and still does, in some specialised contexts - hence the name poll tax for a per-person tax. In the United States, however, the term has come to be used almost exclusively for a fixed tax applied to voting. Since "going to the polls" is a common idiom for voting (deriving from the fact that early voting involved head-counts), a new folk etymology has supplanted common knowledge of the phrase's true origins in America.
