Straight women who kiss or fondle each other in clubs in the hopes of attracting men are...

Cooper Chucklebutt, Tuesday, 6 December 2011 05:24 (twelve years ago) link

xp i think that's mostly true but no harm in giving it a shot anyway. worst case scenario you meet someone and they're lame and you (probably) never see them again. i have met some cool ppl off it.

Hanging out with me is like riding a roller coaster through a hurricane on a school night. Some people dream in black and white. I dream in awesome. The sound of my voice is the thumping bass that sets the tempo for your wildest fantasies...

oh wait lol

...if any of the above description appealed to you, then I may not be your guy.

I am sure there are a great many people who are honing their talent for satire on okcupid.

Aimless, Tuesday, 6 December 2011 06:27 (twelve years ago) link

OK Cupid is great. I've had some bad dates, but I've had some good times through there too. Now in a LTR so don't need it anymore, but would recommend it if you find the whole dating "thing" a bit daunting. Don't be put off by user-generated lameness, it's not all terrible. And not everyone is as adept at creating a likable online persona as people who regularly frequent message-boards.

NotEnough, Tuesday, 6 December 2011 14:10 (twelve years ago) link

LTR didn't come though OKCupid btw, but I'm sure it helps put your head in the right place. There's nothing like a few good dates to make you feel not-physically-gruesome.

NotEnough, Tuesday, 6 December 2011 14:12 (twelve years ago) link

I may have messed up the double negatives there.

NotEnough, Tuesday, 6 December 2011 14:13 (twelve years ago) link

I meant "not good at crafting online personas" rather than "not good at crafting the persona of a likable guy on a messageboard". Although that might be true too.

Those not entirely satisfied with OKC might consider looking into Hot Tech Startup! HowAboutWe, on which I met without too much difficulty someone very nice and reasonably well-matched (though I have removed myself from the dating pool for someone else). I can't really compare the two sites' populations, and note that OKC will probably tell you more about someone upfront, but there may be advantages to a little more mystery and the lighter tone of the pick-a-date focus.

Raku can be very fun, though I think techniques vary.

Yesterday I was relieved to discover that I did not have an OKC account. One of my phobias is that someone I know will find my profile.

I have one now, but I haven't filled it out b/c I would have to kill myself if any of my friends, co-workers, or ILX people found it.

Sandbox Jesse, Wednesday, 28 December 2011 06:33 (twelve years ago) link

Why would you have to kill yourself if anyone you knew found it? OKC is alright, you get to meet cool people, maybe sleep with them, maybe more. Why is this is source of embarrassment again?

dark side of the goon (furnace mane), Wednesday, 28 December 2011 07:36 (twelve years ago) link

OTOH, if your profile makes it clear that your idea of a better relationship = more fisting, then yeh, you might want to keep your profile on the downlow.

You failed, you didn’t eat the whole pizza (NotEnough), Wednesday, 28 December 2011 09:20 (twelve years ago) link

Not embarrassed at having a profile, but I really really don't want friends reading it!

Sandbox Jesse, Wednesday, 28 December 2011 14:33 (twelve years ago) link

It would be like having friends listening in on a first date.

Sandbox Jesse, Wednesday, 28 December 2011 14:34 (twelve years ago) link

on a fist date?

The Larry Sandbox Show (sic), Wednesday, 28 December 2011 14:48 (twelve years ago) link

xp Oh yeh, you wouldn't want your friends reading it, but that's different from them knowing it exists, surely? And if they do find it, kinda so what? I've let friends read my OKC profile before (from when I was single) and it really wasn't a problem, for them or for me. But yeh, letting it all hang on on a dating profile is a scary experience.

You failed, you didn’t eat the whole pizza (NotEnough), Wednesday, 28 December 2011 15:43 (twelve years ago) link

Oh yeh, I don't care if someone knows it's there, but I really don't want them reading it.

Sandbox Jesse, Wednesday, 28 December 2011 15:54 (twelve years ago) link

Though TBH, I'm sort of here wanting help and support making a profile (I've done it a million times before, but I would like input), but I don't want any of you to actually see it once it's up.

Sandbox Jesse, Wednesday, 28 December 2011 15:56 (twelve years ago) link

I sort of wonder if creating a profile with privacy concerns on one's mind affects the content, and if so, does it make it better, worse, or just different.

okc #2 - spent the night with her on nye; we worked out the particulars for a casual relationship and will be keeping in touch
okc #3 - 1 friendly email, think we're gonna be rare communicators... though she made a big show of putting my name in her phone on first date. just think she's too busy to do anything halfway.
okc #4 - turned out that, though we never met, we lived on the same street (two doors down!) when i was with my ex and that led to an amazingly awkward conversation about my old block and the frustrations I have with it and jc in general. did not work well. One drink apiece and a plate of deviled eggs later we went different ways, salute.
okc #5 - we are maybe doing yoga together today and then getting dinner. she wrote this morning saying she may have to cancel the yoga portion of our show, some ill-defined personal drama on her end.
okc #6 - friendly online chat turned pretty filthy after an hour; we spent a fair amount of time editing and critiquing each others profiles. very meta. she gave me her number but i think i'd rather keep this online for the moment.
okc #7 - brunch cancelled, lunch midweek is a go. we apparently work on the same block. this small world shit is creepy.
