I REALLY like Express Yourself off studio one soul. It manages to sound like early happy mondays.

The whole comp gets a bit insipid, though.

If you ever want to be really angry, google "Shadoks Music."

ian (orion), Saturday, 9 December 2006 06:45 (seventeen years ago) link

I dunno, none of the "Studio One Soul" tracks seemed to really add much to the originals (well, besides the obvious fact that they're reggaefied covers), the whole thing felt very bland. "Hustle!" is totally great tho, agreed.

Yeah, this Joe Gibbs record is really great.

Al Green's "Mend A Broken Heart," then the Bee Gees' version, which curdled my coffee instantly.

expost - where?

amon (amon), Tuesday, 12 December 2006 05:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Ossie All Stars Leggo Dub was an excellent recommendation - really like it.

Did they share the same sound effects with Joe Gibb's African Dub team? The gong, flowing water, doorbell and telephone sound very similar.

Bob Six (Bob Six), Tuesday, 12 December 2006 08:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Anyone got Studio One Groups?

I'd say the two essential SJ Studio One comps are Rockers and Dub. Dub is really special - I don't know who the hell actually mixed these, whether it was Sylvan Morris or Coxsone himself, but some of that material is amazing. The dub of Delroy Wilson's orginal Run Run (Running Dub) is a cracker, especially when the vocal comes back in at the end.

Oh - and Studio One Funk is great too.

I've also been listening to the Scientist 'Vampires' set recently - possibly my favourite Dub album, certainly in my top 3. For me, it's quality of the vocal and the way that he leaves in just enough of it to set an atmosphere that makes Scientist so special. That and the sheer depth of the mixes.

Dr.C (Dr.C), Tuesday, 12 December 2006 10:30 (seventeen years ago) link

I like the Scientist 'Vampires' and 'World Cup' albums.

Some of his other records I've found a bit anaemic, in that he has a good concept - such as space invaders - but doesn't play around enough with those sounds.

two weeks pass...
Haha all of them! Best of Studio One and Full Up: More Best of Studio One on Heartbeat are absolute must haves esp. since they each have 6 bonus tracks and pristine sound. Studio One Rockers, Studio One Roots and Studio One Scorchers 1 & 2 on Soul Jazz are all pretty essentially as well. Sometimes the Soul Jazz and Heartbeat stuff repeats a track, but it's pretty rare as there is so much Coxsone stuff to choose from.

-- Alex in SF (clobberthesauru...), December 8th, 2006 3:44 PM. (Alex in SF)

damn you werent kidding. i wanted rockers but they were out so i got roots and djs and both are excellent. think i saw the full up one there and one of the scorchers (is that the instrumentals one?). can anyone rep for the djs vol. 2?

amon (amon), Friday, 29 December 2006 07:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Both Scorchers are instrumental (or 90% instrumental, there are some vocals on the best track on both volumes "After Christmas".) Haven't heard DJs Vol 2, but the tracklist looks fantastic (even though I don't recognize any tracks from other stuff I have.) I don't think you can go too wrong with any of the Soul Jazz comps (although Classics is sort of mooted by owning the two Heartbeat comps I listed above.)

Jah Thomas meets King Tubby's Inna Roots Of Dub (Rhino, 1997)
Well 'tis fine, I'd say. But didnnae quite make my day or anything.

tiit (t**t), Friday, 29 December 2006 16:34 (seventeen years ago) link

I came around to the new Dub Trio record finally. The metal parts are cheap thrills and there's some great dub shit. The Patton tune is actually my least favorite track I think.

JordanC (JordanC), Friday, 29 December 2006 16:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh. I've heard only 1 Dub Trio track all in all. "Illegal Dub". That I did quite like.

i am listening to dance hall style RIGHT NOW.

I listened to White Mice yesterday. That's a great lost album.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 29 December 2006 17:29 (seventeen years ago) link

i was thinking about getting that. emusic has a bunch of wackies/basic replay related stuff.

violent j (sandboxhulkington), Friday, 29 December 2006 17:42 (seventeen years ago) link

I hope Basic Replay does a comp of their 7"/12" singles. Some of those look great ("Call Me Rambo", "King Culture presents: Cuss Cuss").

i always forget how pretty that love joys record is.

violent j (sandboxhulkington), Friday, 29 December 2006 19:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah as much as I love "Uptown Ranking", the Love Joys really put Althea & Donna to shame. Those two albums are just gorgeous.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 29 December 2006 19:33 (seventeen years ago) link

i saw the white mice cd but it was the versions. rather have the vocal one.

man s0und g4rd3n has a buttload of wackies stuff in but i couldn't tell what was good: meditations, junior delahaye, african roots, etc.

amon (amon), Friday, 29 December 2006 19:36 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah i'm always kinda suprised by how stocked up s0und g4rd3n's reggae section is. (their other "world music" sections suck ass though.)

friday on the porch (lfam), Friday, 29 December 2006 21:34 (seventeen years ago) link

I really really like it, but I love early digital dancehall and Waterhouse style deejaying.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 29 December 2006 21:51 (seventeen years ago) link

i'm listening to the versions and boy are they great! i love 1980s digital dancehall too so i'm def buying this. i'm not familiar with waterhouse deejaying though... any links?

friday on the porch (lfam), Friday, 29 December 2006 22:02 (seventeen years ago) link

well, i'll probably buy the vocals over the versions.

friday on the porch (lfam), Friday, 29 December 2006 22:02 (seventeen years ago) link

It's that heavy echo-ed flat style of singjaying a la Tenor Saw/Nitty Gritty/Courtney Melody that's ubiquitous in early 80s dancehall.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 29 December 2006 22:08 (seventeen years ago) link

saw that too but figured i had enough yabby between jesus dread and dub it to the top.

what's a good dennis brown album?

amon (amon), Saturday, 30 December 2006 06:08 (seventeen years ago) link

The two Niney collections are tops: Some Like It Hot and Open The Gate. The Blood & Fire collection which is really just a late Joe Gibbs 70s album with a bunch of bonus cuts. It is good but uneven and not as essential as the other Joe Gibbs produced stuff (Visions, Words of Wisdom.) I would start with the first Niney collection and move on from there.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 30 December 2006 06:27 (seventeen years ago) link

The new B&F Yabby You is a bit like the Dennis Brown one actually. It's great, but if you feel like you have enough of their stuff it's one of those things you can wait to find cheap.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 30 December 2006 06:30 (seventeen years ago) link

well, just ordered from ebreggae.com:
Augustus Pablo - King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown
Lee Perry - Blackboard Jungle Dub
Lee Perry & Niney the Observer - Producers

I decided to give Lee Perry another chance, and Blackboard Jungle Dub seems the place to start. Augustus Pablo is amazing psychedelic dub, and I can't wait to get that again. been years since I listened to him.

"I decided to give Lee Perry another chance, and Blackboard Jungle Dub seems the place to start."

Yeah it's a great place to start if you don't listen to anything anyone else says.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 30 December 2006 18:05 (seventeen years ago) link

I mean that's a great album, but as I said on that other thread if you want to be convinced of Perry's genius that's not the first place I would turn.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 30 December 2006 18:08 (seventeen years ago) link

perry's productions for other people > his own albums

violent j (sandboxhulkington), Saturday, 30 December 2006 18:21 (seventeen years ago) link

i realize this is neither a new nor controversial statement, but i feel it bears repeating

violent j (sandboxhulkington), Saturday, 30 December 2006 18:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Wow that's a lot of Joe Gibbs dub. I have the first five you mention and then a couple of vocal/deejay collections. Compared to Channel One or Bunny Lee, Gibbs feels kind of underrepresented in the reissue market actually although apparently he's been pretty difficult to work with so that may be entirely his fault.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 15 February 2007 20:26 (seventeen years ago) link

the mighty 2 comp isn't dub so much as various gibbs/et productions

amon (amon), Saturday, 17 February 2007 01:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 17 February 2007 01:32 (seventeen years ago) link

There is a Soul Jazz one that's pretty good too, Roots of Dancehall or something like that (there are like twelve compilations called Roots of Dancehall aren't there haha.)
