Kevin, I warned you that Hem was a) addicting and b) overwhelmingly sad. But so pretty, I can't stop.

it's weird, whenever that song comes up on a playlist now and it's not followed by the go betweens i think something is wrong. i have somehow come to the conclusion that the hem song is an introduction to the go betweens song. anyway, no sad bastard music for me last night, i hung xmas lights and played the shit out my stax lps (johnny taylor, rufus thomas, staples singers, booker t, eddie floyd) in preparation to my trip to memphis. i'm totally going back to the stax museum and this time i won't be so hung over that all i do is puke in the bathroom.

oh, and wait, it's not the hem song that i think of as the intro to the go betweens one. but that hem one, god, it's a ton and all but goddamn it cuts close to the bone.

Sun City Girls -330,003 Crossdressers From Beyond the Big Veda

thats what i think right now, but there's still like 1467 of their albums i haven't heard

Hem as an introduction to the Revelers? That's pretty funny.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 14 December 2006 15:20 (seventeen years ago) link

no, i think the hem song is now officially the introduction to tanq & tonic.

otto midnight, that 'tofu makes you gay' ding dong (otto midnight), Thursday, 14 December 2006 15:27 (seventeen years ago) link

hey milton - any idea of a track listing for that SCG show?

BTW thanks a million for sending it

69 (pete), Thursday, 14 December 2006 15:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, Cat's Miaow as an intro to the Go-Betweens makes tons more sense.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 14 December 2006 15:38 (seventeen years ago) link

yes, that's the one! i find myself walking around absent mindedly singing that one line outloud all the time now. sometimes i do it in a cartoony almost popeye-esque voice.

i might be going insane.

otto midnight, that 'tofu makes you gay' ding dong (otto midnight), Thursday, 14 December 2006 15:47 (seventeen years ago) link

dadamah - scratch sun / radio brain 7"

ian (orion), Thursday, 14 December 2006 15:49 (seventeen years ago) link

No, Cat's Miaow are retardedly twee, you get a free pass to improvise/fuck up their stuff.

i bought my copy of new day rising on thayer st. in providence when it came out. same with my german label copy of zen arcade.

scott seward (121212), Thursday, 14 December 2006 16:46 (seventeen years ago) link

it was all downhill after flip yr wig. i remember being so excited that new day rising came out, like, 2 months after i bought zen arcade. or at least that's how i remember it. my dad bought me zen arcade for my 16th birthday. after dinner at montanas! is montanas still there??? tex-mex! some guy died eating the chili there. cuz he was allergic to nuts.

no idea! track 7 is 'the shining path' from torch of the mystics but the rest I'm either unfamiliar with or it's improvised

I like this TJK album. i've had it lying around and never listened to it. basically, it's steely dan + TJK.

scott seward (121212), Thursday, 14 December 2006 19:09 (seventeen years ago) link

i think i'm still bitter about buying a sealed copy of TJK's White Cloud band album with textured rattlesnake cover and playing it and finding out it was FUCKED. slightly warped and skip skip skippy. sooooo sad. that's the risk you run with SS.

haha, it looks like she's singing right at me

Dominique (dleone), Friday, 15 December 2006 05:01 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, the singer kinda blows. i liked some of the music and guitars. i bought it on a whim cuz i heard it was pretty good and i don't see it for sale much. i didn't pay a ton for it, but i RARELY buy stuff like that on ebay, so i was bummed.

you would probably like that kaye album, ian, if you haven't heard it. country byrds + steely dan. and not, you know, SOUNDING like steely dan. i mean that becker/fagen/etc are the backing band. amongst others.

x-post

scott seward (121212), Friday, 15 December 2006 05:03 (seventeen years ago) link

i bet i would like it! but i doubt i will ever see it :(
i got a nice soft/country rock LP by a band called Trilogy today; it's still at work.

right now I'm listening to Compulsive Gamblers - Live & Deadly! Side 2 is just all so killer. They're a band I'm bummed I never saw. Do you like the Oblivians/Greg Cartwright-related stuff Skot?

ian (orion), Friday, 15 December 2006 05:35 (seventeen years ago) link

i don't think i've ever heard that stuff. they were garagey crypt band, right? the 90's are kind of a blur though, i might have heard them.

scott seward (121212), Friday, 15 December 2006 05:41 (seventeen years ago) link

yeaaaaah. compulsive gamblers r more soulful country rock type stuff, but a couple of da same guys.

btw scott, apparently i lost the tape i made for you before i could send it.
