I just listened to all of these. So 2012 is a straight fite between the tediously insipid and the bludgeoningly obnoxious? If so I'm going with the latter.
A$AP ROCKY - I'm with Lex here, why this dude and not like one of 50 other middling American rappers knocking about? Or maybe even one of the good ones?
AZEALIA BANKS - Far and away the best thing here. Sometimes you only need one song, and it's more than some of these guys have.
DOT ROTTEN - I have a lot of time for his RIP Young Dot mixtape from a few years ago, and this track is a lot better than most of yr route-one pop-grime. There's probably an ace Mike Delinquent Project remix in there somewhere as well. And his verse is one of the best bits on the Cher Lloyd album.
DRY THE RIVER - Have seemingly been the next big hype band for years now. Die.
FLUX PAVILION - This is... not terrible as far as brostep goes? Quite enjoyed it actually.
FRANK OCEAN - The thing about watching the end of a party through smoke is that the end of the party is usually the best bit, it's when you sit about and talk shit for hours with a beer in one hand a cup of tea in the other, and anyone who thinks that watching the end of the party through smoke equals being a bit emo probably shouldn't have been invited to the party in the first place, and probably wasn't. None of this has much to do with Frank Ocean, who is boring.
FRIENDS - I quite liked this the first 942 times it was played on 6music, now I never want to hear it ever again. Also what with 'Friends' and 'Girls' are we in the age of the shit ungoogleable band name now?
JAMIE N COMMONS - I'm sure you're all as happy as I am that the post-Mumfords coalition of cunts world now has its own Paul Weller.
LIANNE LA HAVAS - The thing about Feist is she's actually good at writing songs. This is just... nothingy.
MICHAEL KIWANUKA - influenced by a free covermount CD on a magazine... of the Lighthouse Family?
NIKI & THE DOVE - I noticed that there's no Jobbing Aussie Band Who Sound Like MGMT this year so the Third Rate Synthpop Band Whose Singer Grew Up Listening To PJ Harvey, Bjork And Kate Bush will have to keep the hardy perennial flame alive.
REN HARVIEU - this sounded alright as far as this sort of retro coffee soul thing goes.
SKRILLEX - Good grief Skrillex is actually one of the better things here.
SPECTOR - The one the NME will half-heartedly put on the cover knowing full well no one care but you've got to hold on to something in these dark indie days and well any old shit will do by now.
STOOSHE - gorblimey blood sausage pip pip
