asap rocky getting uk hype surprises me. the mixtape is aight in a late night stoned vibe kind of way but he can't really rap, i'm kind of tired of music getting lauded just cuz it makes people vibe out a bit when they're on their laptops in their bedrooms alone at 2am.

lol that 'token rapper on bbc list' is getting uk hype. it worked wonders for sway now didnt it

also the press focusing on how filthy!!1111 azealia banks is is so weird. it's like they're trying to pretend trina never existed. writing my favourite rapper out of history ;_;

imma go out on a limb and say they arent pretending and just dont know trina existed

big popppa hoy, Monday, 5 December 2011 08:55 (twelve years ago) link

imma go out on a limb & say its because she's talking all polite & theatrically that they're not comparing her w/ trina or any of the many other lewd female rappers

MICHAEL KIWANUKA - influenced by a free covermount CD on a magazine

I listened to the Huey out of Fun Lovin' Criminals show on 6music yesterday for iirc the first time in my life and nearly every song he played was good! - except this dude was playing live and was just awful Jools Holland wallpaper paste

Dot Rotten - this has got to be like the fifth year on the bounce there's been some grime MC who I just know as a name on indistinguishable mix CDRs in the dance record store, and then it's like "oh right he's decided to make bouncy pop records"

am I right in thinking Skrillex is already playing like 2,000 capacity venues or something in the UK alone, to say nothing of the States? feel like it's kind of cheating having him on here

MICHAEL KIWANUKA - influenced by a free covermount CD on a magazine

if i ever get famous imma say this. and that free covermount CD will be a bunch of Prince Po outtakes and remixes off a copy of HHC about 8 years ago.

big popppa hoy, Monday, 5 December 2011 10:01 (twelve years ago) link

from the name, i wrongly assumed Niki and the Dove was going to be some Florence and the Machine bull, but I'm listening to their EP now and it's actually pretty decent - like a poppier gang gang dance? I don't hate it.

Roz, Monday, 5 December 2011 12:44 (twelve years ago) link

niki and the dove sounds like a prince reference... i was expecting them to be more like esben and the witch from the name.

that azaelia banks song is fun. the music is awesome, her cadence is pretty fab and it kind of moves around like lying on a trampoline in zero gravity. but there's something a bit suspicious about it - like there's some icky hipster agenda going on or something? I dunno...

Flux Pavilion - He released an actually quite fun brostep EP called Lines In Wax towards the end of last year. It wasn't dreadful, but i'm surprised he's in this list given he's been around a while and has made a fairly big name for himself already.

I'm a twat for not having check out the Frank Ocean album yet. Seemed Odd Future were set to take over the world and then Tyler kind of messed that up a bit with Goblin and all the shite he talked up at the time. I still hope they can do something cool together in future.

Someone I know who likes quite a lot of indie-folk was telling me about Spector and Friends. The Friends track he played sounded a bit like Dirty Projectors, but maybe a bit more palatable, I dunno. Not necessarily my thing.

Skrillex - a necessary evil, i suppose.

"Dry The River are a quintet from London, fronted by medical student Peter Liddle..."

Fuck off then

"Like Mumford & Sons, this London band offer a glimpse of the pastoral with their infectious semi-acoustic ditties..."

And, while you're at it, die

Tony Hart land (Deep in the Tony Hart land), Monday, 5 December 2011 13:06 (twelve years ago) link

cursory glance tells me Spector are the guys whose kneecaps i'd most like to smash with a 7 iron in 2012

Jamie N. Commons in a heartbeat. Even his name is annoying. That N. No need for it.

Tony Hart land (Deep in the Tony Hart land), Monday, 5 December 2011 13:12 (twelve years ago) link

I assume someone thinks Flux Pavilion is gonna blow up next year like Skrillex did this year, ie distinct from 'big among people who listen to ridiculous chainsaw music'

Extreme Lifestyle, Monday, 5 December 2011 13:42 (twelve years ago) link

whether that's realistic is another matter

Extreme Lifestyle, Monday, 5 December 2011 13:43 (twelve years ago) link

"Bon Iver", used in a positive context, is a malapropism. You'd think the BBC of all people should know that.

it's all so INERT

idk it's not as if i don't have a place for that aesthetic in my life, as someone who is often on my laptop at 2am, but it just makes me think, GET OFF THE INTERNET GO FOR A GODDAMN WALK.

Friends is a decent little band, but I could totally understand forever being turned off of them for the "My Boo" cover. Dreadful shit.

Rakim had joined the A$AP (Always Strive and Prosper) crew

!???!?!?

upper mississippi 2: still shakin, Monday, 5 December 2011 16:43 (twelve years ago) link

lol do you remember him deciding that maino was the only rapper worth caring about? this is better.

big popppa hoy, Monday, 5 December 2011 16:46 (twelve years ago) link

haha i do remember the maino thing, maino did a guest on the last rakim thing which was pretty disappointing....18th letter still rules tho

upper mississippi 2: still shakin, Monday, 5 December 2011 16:48 (twelve years ago) link

Rakim is A$AP Rocky's real name

Number None, Monday, 5 December 2011 17:19 (twelve years ago) link

I just listened to all of these. So 2012 is a straight fite between the tediously insipid and the bludgeoningly obnoxious? If so I'm going with the latter.

A$AP ROCKY - I'm with Lex here, why this dude and not like one of 50 other middling American rappers knocking about? Or maybe even one of the good ones?

AZEALIA BANKS - Far and away the best thing here. Sometimes you only need one song, and it's more than some of these guys have.

DOT ROTTEN - I have a lot of time for his RIP Young Dot mixtape from a few years ago, and this track is a lot better than most of yr route-one pop-grime. There's probably an ace Mike Delinquent Project remix in there somewhere as well. And his verse is one of the best bits on the Cher Lloyd album.

DRY THE RIVER - Have seemingly been the next big hype band for years now. Die.

FLUX PAVILION - This is... not terrible as far as brostep goes? Quite enjoyed it actually.

FRANK OCEAN - The thing about watching the end of a party through smoke is that the end of the party is usually the best bit, it's when you sit about and talk shit for hours with a beer in one hand a cup of tea in the other, and anyone who thinks that watching the end of the party through smoke equals being a bit emo probably shouldn't have been invited to the party in the first place, and probably wasn't. None of this has much to do with Frank Ocean, who is boring.

FRIENDS - I quite liked this the first 942 times it was played on 6music, now I never want to hear it ever again. Also what with 'Friends' and 'Girls' are we in the age of the shit ungoogleable band name now?

JAMIE N COMMONS - I'm sure you're all as happy as I am that the post-Mumfords coalition of cunts world now has its own Paul Weller.

LIANNE LA HAVAS - The thing about Feist is she's actually good at writing songs. This is just... nothingy.

MICHAEL KIWANUKA - influenced by a free covermount CD on a magazine... of the Lighthouse Family?

NIKI & THE DOVE - I noticed that there's no Jobbing Aussie Band Who Sound Like MGMT this year so the Third Rate Synthpop Band Whose Singer Grew Up Listening To PJ Harvey, Bjork And Kate Bush will have to keep the hardy perennial flame alive.

REN HARVIEU - this sounded alright as far as this sort of retro coffee soul thing goes.

SKRILLEX - Good grief Skrillex is actually one of the better things here.

SPECTOR - The one the NME will half-heartedly put on the cover knowing full well no one care but you've got to hold on to something in these dark indie days and well any old shit will do by now.

STOOSHE - gorblimey blood sausage pip pip

Matt DC, Monday, 5 December 2011 20:57 (twelve years ago) link

rakim DID show up in a juelz santana video once, so if he had endorsed a$ap rocky it would cement my 'rakim and surfboard dudes are of one mind' theory

N&TD aren't third rate anything, take it back!

i'd like to protest their overly familiar name format

hmmmmmm

є(٥_ ٥)э, Monday, 5 December 2011 21:14 (twelve years ago) link

wait is that in response to me making fun of the name of an act i haven't heard? or just an unrelated comment

Lamp is such a master of "i'm silently judging you...look! look! over here, can't you see me silently judging you!? aren't you wondering what i'm thinking!?"
