okay npr streaming the anthony hamilton album atm. Not really up on r n b myself but I'm liking it so far. Is he well regarded?

anthony hamilton is fantastic, have been looking fwd to this album - feeling the single

(can't be bovd with streams though)

lex pretend, Monday, 5 December 2011 10:15 (twelve years ago) link

did many people check out the anthony david album this year btw? "god said" dominated by listening because it's such a powerful song, but listening back to the whole thing and the rest holds up really well.

listening to the tia london album that deej was recommending somewhere - COSIGN! reminds me a lot of cheri dennis

this Jennifer Hudson album is solid, really the record everyone wanted her to make the first time around and probably stopped expecting when she didn't

Mr. Stevensome #dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Monday, 5 December 2011 20:03 (twelve years ago) link

I made a short mix of some of my favorite R&B tracks of the year. Most of these are probably already familiar to most of you, but they're worth checking out if you haven't heard them:

i need to listen to that j hud album

horseshoe, Monday, 5 December 2011 23:47 (twelve years ago) link

i liked j-hud's first album! it wasn't, you know, consistently great but its high points ("spotlight", "my heart") were excellent, and kept me coming back in a way that little on the second managed to

lex pretend, Tuesday, 6 December 2011 00:56 (twelve years ago) link

first album was not bad but it was definitely in many ways a misfire and worse than that forgettable. by comparison I Remember Me is just a murderer's row of some of R&B's best songwriters/producers doing quality work (give or take a Ryan Tedder).

so is mary j blige's album good?

uberweiss, Wednesday, 7 December 2011 21:28 (twelve years ago) link

it is! so much better than i was expecting, i was not particularly looking forward to it based on how parched of ideas the last one was. kind of feel blige's reluctance (or just lack of interest) in committing to a single style or aesthetic makes it less satisfying as an album but there's this fantastic doomed stateliness about the best tracks here. "mr wrong", obv, is an amazing song once you get past drake (i just fwd through his verse now, can't even take hearing his voice). i guess my other favourites are

and

surm, Wednesday, 7 December 2011 22:07 (twelve years ago) link

the robin thicke album is also pretty good on one listen - it mostly sticks to one mood, this kind of lilting, light-touch, bossanova-tinged seduction soul, but it does it really well. and it's not as if this year's fêted r&b releases aren't all about doing one mood over the whole album too. the oddest moment is "never give up", which apparently samples an orchestral piece that's based on traditional mexican dance

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Wednesday, 7 December 2011 22:10 (twelve years ago) link

only thicke would think to call one of those soft, light songs "dangerous" though

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Wednesday, 7 December 2011 22:13 (twelve years ago) link

Why did I just realize Anthony Hamilton is performing nearby tonight (aww man, too late for me to change plans and go)...

Another Suburbanite, Wednesday, 7 December 2011 22:18 (twelve years ago) link

the last thicke was a little too heavy on cartoony bossanova slow jams, but i will definitely check for this one because something else is still a minor classic to me

sockness, just sockness (Mr. Stevenson #2), Wednesday, 7 December 2011 22:18 (twelve years ago) link

oh it definitely doesn't add anything particularly new to the thicke aesthetic, apart from "never give up" and a kind of saadiqy retro exercise at the start that he pulls off pretty well. i think the thicke persona is becoming more palatable to me over time though, can't quite put my finger on why. at this particular juncture an album that's so listenable is rather welcome.

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Wednesday, 7 December 2011 22:23 (twelve years ago) link

i like it too -- it's still goofy as hell, there's a hilariously odd but kinda fun protest song at the beginning -- but yeah it's very sunday morning, borderline jazzy background kinda music -- the song w/ lil wayne is the one that really stands out, oh and also there opener is 'something else' style soul -- i'm glad that there's no "shakin it 4 daddy" style songs on this tho

v-shasty, Wednesday, 7 December 2011 23:03 (twelve years ago) link

i like the new mary j just fine, too

horseshoe, Thursday, 8 December 2011 00:29 (twelve years ago) link

worst cover, though

horseshoe, Thursday, 8 December 2011 00:30 (twelve years ago) link

^^ I see what you did there.

Is it me or has that Blige album gotten no crossover promotional push? The last one also kinda sneaked out too. It's like she endures one- or two-album cycles of intense interest then recedes (e.g. The Breakthrough-Growing Pains got crossover promotion).

Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 8 December 2011 01:10 (twelve years ago) link

she's getting older and she and/or her label know it, plus straight up R&B itself barely every crosses over anymore. she's lucky to have retained as much of a fanbase as she has, frankly.

yeah i was gonna say, you didn't even mention gorgeous movie star wife.

j0rdan otm though, there's a lot of character and playfulness in Thicke's music that people don't necessarily pick up on unless he's laying the goofy retro stuff on thick like on parts of Sex Therapy.

I have a song on my new album called, “I Don’t Know How It Feels to Be You,” and she and I were in the middle of an argument and she said, “Robin, no matter how hard you try, or how compassionate you are, you’ll never know what it’s like to be a Black woman.” So I got up and I wrote this song in five minutes.

i can't.
