I wish that "when were you born?" thread was a "jaymc tells you when you were born" thread.

I wish every other thread would go fuck itself prison sex style

i think my high school journalism teacher emailed me? but he didn't identify himself as such and he has two of minnesota's most common names, so i really have no idea.

journalism class in high school?

TOMB07 (trm), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:10 (seventeen years ago) link

i took journalism in high school.

Mr. Que (Party with me Punker), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:12 (seventeen years ago) link

oh, it was a complete joke. he also ran the school paper and i spent most of my time trying to sneak curse words past him (succeeded on two occasions, including my final "column," which ended with "now let's graduate the hell outta this bitch")

a_p (a_p), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:13 (seventeen years ago) link

I took journalism in high school, just to fill the last english credit.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:13 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah i wrote a killer indepth article for my h.s. paper about the National Honor Society that basically listed everyone that was inducted and that was the whole article.

Mr. Que (Party with me Punker), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Alex I am surprised you did not take a blogging class in high school - you are very good at it.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:15 (seventeen years ago) link

i want to destroy that whiny thread.

Mr. Que (Party with me Punker), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:17 (seventeen years ago) link

i actually won some sort of state-wide high school journalism prize for writing 1,000 words every month about how much i hated all of my peers and the entire mpls public schools system -- NO WONDER I'M A BLOGGER

a_p (a_p), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:18 (seventeen years ago) link

WHICH whiny thread, mw?

a_p (a_p), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:19 (seventeen years ago) link

I took some ecology course which mostly involved going out for hikes and wading around in rivers on thursday or friday afternoons, and instead of taking a 4th math credit I had a period for "art independent study"* in the morning. plus two hours of band.

*"tom is bad at sculpture"

TOMB07 (trm), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:20 (seventeen years ago) link

i pretty much just skipped class all the time

ZR (teenagequiet), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:21 (seventeen years ago) link

i would honestly be surprised if i attended more than 56% of my senior year

ZR (teenagequiet), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:21 (seventeen years ago) link

alex--the meta one.

photography was a much better h.s. elective than journalism--we got to hide out in the darkroom and listen to tapes.

Mr. Que (Party with me Punker), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:22 (seventeen years ago) link

my senior year i spent most of my time in the darkroom for class and for the school paper, pretty awesome.

Mr. Que (Party with me Punker), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:22 (seventeen years ago) link

i didn't take journalism but i did spend a semester my senior year officially listed as aide to journalism teacher which meant sitting in the back of the classroom copy editing approx 1 issue of the student newspaper & otherwise doing nothing

dar1a g (dar1a g), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:23 (seventeen years ago) link

I took the architecture elective 3 times and the teacher let me lead the class by the 3rd one. My guidance counselor still tried to tell me I'd probably end up changing majors in college.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:24 (seventeen years ago) link

i spent my senior year attending the u of mn part-time and attending high school aproximately not at all.

a_p (a_p), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:26 (seventeen years ago) link

OMG I just remembered for the AP journalism class I took we participated in some big high school journo conference at Columbia and I did a presentation on online journalism. I INVENTED THE REMIX, 1995.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:27 (seventeen years ago) link

WOW YOU INVENTED THE INTERNET

Mr. Que (Party with me Punker), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:28 (seventeen years ago) link

my high school has a wikipedia page! i'm going to vandalize it.

a_p (a_p), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:29 (seventeen years ago) link

no that's awesome Brian, it's also charming that your teacher let you teach class. that happened in my english class in h.s.-- we suddenly started learning about South Africa for three days by our school's version of Lisa Simpson

Mr. Que (Party with me Punker), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:30 (seventeen years ago) link

for senior year requirements at my HS you had to choose a lab focus. Options included ROBOTICS, BIOTECHNOLOGY, MICROELECTRONICS, OPTICS, (aka LASER LAB), and PROTOTYPING. I really expected that the place would have been inadvertently blown up by now.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:31 (seventeen years ago) link

LOL @ HS wiki

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:32 (seventeen years ago) link

My hs had a gardening elective, which just let the stoners sit around and smoke in the greenhouse instead of on the loading dock.

The new building was made to counter the student unrest of the times. Windows are absent from the original building. Windows are prone to shatter easily unless expensive shatterproof glass is used. Structures of this time period tend to lack windows, which could be quickly destroyed by any violent protest around them, a common occurrence, making them at best expensive to replace and at worst a public safety hazard.

The building's overall structure also was designed for the unrest of the times. From the outside South looks like a brick fortress. The building was made to be very stable, and its fortress-like structure was intended to quell student unrest and prevent a possible student revolt or uprising.

my guidance counselor was all "uh.. well, you know you can still apply to [Crappy Local State U]" (I had a 4.0 gpa and really high SATs & was like get me the hell out of this town!)

my public high school only had 3 AP classes offered but 2 of them were at the same time.. i took AP english and AP calc, I have no idea how i got through the calc other than sitting right next to some of the people who always did their work on time & copying off them

Mandy Moore's visit
In 2000, Mandy Moore performed a concert at TJHSST as a result of a radio contest sponsored by now-defunct local radio station WWZZ (Z104). The contest was conducted via online voting on the Z104 website. Students were allowed to vote for their school as much as once a day, for the duration of the contest. However, because the voting system had no way of verifying who was voting, several TJHSST students wrote a number of various computer scripts that generated rapid, automatic votes for TJHSST, randomly choosing a member of the student body to vote as.

hahaha my guidance counselor in my junior year called me in and said "Hey we should sign you up to take the PSAT sometime soon." I had already taken the SAT twice so I said, "Yeah, I'm a junior, we should be discussing colleges and stuff." HAHAHAHAHA, yeah thanks for the guidance.

Mr. Que (Party with me Punker), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:38 (seventeen years ago) link

wow, reading my HS wiki has plunged me back into a world that I had largely forgotten.

...if successful, TJ3SAT will be the first satellite launched into space that is built by high school students.

Same nerds, more technology.

tom, no windows in your HS either? no wonder we're so angry.

a_p (a_p), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:48 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah me too Brian.

Mr. Que (Party with me Punker), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:48 (seventeen years ago) link

xpost - mr q, exactly. i'm still pissed off at the guidance counselor. he could give a rat's ass. no matter how talented the students.. if we all went to the local community college, that was good enough for us

dar1a g (dar1a g), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:48 (seventeen years ago) link

no windows for us neither, "open classrooms," and a wikipedia page dedicated almost solely to the two things we were sort of all right at: wrestling and it's academic.

my guidance counselor suggested community college too!

ZR (teenagequiet), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:50 (seventeen years ago) link

i'm very happy i made it through h.s. unscathed. we had open classrooms for awhile but then they closed them off?
