well tbf the implication was Kanye West and maybe something like KRS-One, or whatever has recently made a Pitchfork list.

Cunga, Saturday, 3 December 2011 17:53 (twelve years ago) link

KRS recently made a P4k list?????

Wow I am out of the loop.

"Alright, Gambino is a mastermind, fuck a bitch to pass the time
Mass Appeal, orange rind, smoke your green, I'm spendin' mine
The beat is witches brew, but beware this shit is potent
E. e. cummin' on her face, now that's poetry in motion
Yeah, Gambino make it work, I'm the boss move somethin'
Yeah, this cool fuckin' suits me, swag two button
Yeah, these girls be actin' crazy when they're dancin', Black Swan
I ain't fuckin' at the club, put your clothes back on
This beat is a disaster, 9/11 this track
Rappers wanna battle me, I have to mail their heads back
And my clique make that dinero, so it's time to meet the fuckers
I am runnin' this bitch, you are just a dog walker"

jesus I thought you guys were cherry picking the bad lines or something like ILX can do now and then, but holy jesus, this whole verse is almost Shaquille O'Neal level rap

if you ain't gonna wash it, i ain't gonna eat it, Saturday, 3 December 2011 17:59 (twelve years ago) link

this friend of mine said this was his favorite rap album of the year. like I have to seriously question the friendship now.

Black Swan = generic hashtag Young Money tripe

EE cummin on her face = whose face? the beat's? Paul Barman-level one-line.

I think the bitch/dog walker one is eyerolly, the other two I don't mind.

if you ain't gonna wash it, i ain't gonna eat it, Saturday, 3 December 2011 18:11 (twelve years ago) link

paul barman is infinitely better than childish gambino

I'm not gonna pretend to be a srs hiphop person and maybe that's part of the reason I (/the rest of the tumblr whites community) approach this differently from the goon community, but pretty much my argument begins and ends w/ "imo...some of these lines are clever"

iatee, Saturday, 3 December 2011 18:27 (twelve years ago) link

but they're not clever, they're really basic

lex pretend, Saturday, 3 December 2011 18:32 (twelve years ago) link

and like actual rappers come up with funnier lines all day

HUSTLA DA =:3 (dealwithit.gif), Saturday, 3 December 2011 18:35 (twelve years ago) link

I am more than willing to believe that whiney

iatee, Saturday, 3 December 2011 18:36 (twelve years ago) link

Like if you want comedy rap, this is at least a step above like MC LARS HORRISHIT or whatever, but there's a whole school of MCs--Copywrite, High & Mighty, Apathy, Bumpy Knuckles, J-Zone, Celph Titled, Chino XL, even Joe Buddden--that do the constant hammering-away-at-punchlines thing. Sorry they're not ADORABLE and on NBC's Pomplamoose-comedy half-hour sitcom, Tumblr whites.

HUSTLA DA =:3 (dealwithit.gif), Saturday, 3 December 2011 18:41 (twelve years ago) link

Seriously, any fan of this idiot download Copywrite's The High Exhaulted and get back at me

i was p into high and mighty and like, louis logic when i was in high school

i bet if i were in high school now id be into childish gambino

lol @ me i think i was just excited to see someone mention high & mighty (xp)

є(٥_ ٥)э, Saturday, 3 December 2011 18:51 (twelve years ago) link

I am runnin' this bitch, you are just a dog walker

this is actually the worst line of that verse. it is just so lazy and shit.

big popppa hoy, Saturday, 3 December 2011 19:09 (twelve years ago) link

whineys community bashing itt getting me so defensive & emotional lol

wil smif, Saturday, 3 December 2011 19:16 (twelve years ago) link

The ILX company motto.

"E. e. cummin' on her face, now that's poetry in motion"

expressing appreciation of this is some shameful shit.

I will go on record as saying I like Shaq's rapping a lot better. There is at least some nostalgia factor at play.

Dranke, the German Drake Impersonator (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 3 December 2011 21:04 (twelve years ago) link

i still want to know whose face he's talking about, since none of the lines preceding that specify a subject.

'your' face, I woulda understood.

if you ain't gonna wash it, i ain't gonna eat it, Saturday, 3 December 2011 21:21 (twelve years ago) link

tbh I have a good amount of empathy for him when he expresses frustration with disconnect between his experiences in "black" and "white" America since I've felt a lot of those some emotions and frustrations and it's not really something you're going to understand unless you've gone through something similar, but when he starts talking about "eating Oreos like the white girls that be blowin' me" I have to tap out

yeah I think that one of the problems w/ the anti-gambino arguments ive read (which i more or less completely agree w/) is that they seem to dismiss the legitimacy of that perspective completely when it's not the rap game (per se) where 'weird' people of color who identify w/ CG might have it hard ... its HIGH SCHOOL.

of course, recognizing that he has a legit perspective & making worthwhile music are two angles that may or may not overlap

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Sunday, 4 December 2011 01:04 (twelve years ago) link

well part of the problem is that he seems to have not been keeping up with rap trends for the past decade, or that because he is sooooo indie, he only has a handful of rap records and doesn't know what the shit his record should sound like in 2011.

I have really been trying to let this go but I can't; fuck this abhorrent, disgusting viewpoint. Don't tell people what their shit is supposed to sound like.

OH NOES, Monday, 5 December 2011 16:01 (twelve years ago) link

i think most people here are totally fine with rap records with an insular or outdated aesthetic from people aren't tapped into 'what's popping in 2011' but if the lyrics are constantly positioning the artist as a breath of fresh air from what's mainstream right now then it kind of behooves the artist to know about what they're positioning themselves as an alternative to

Mr. Stevensome #dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Monday, 5 December 2011 16:05 (twelve years ago) link

it's like shitty alt-rock bands that were still all defensively "sorry we're not like LIMP BIZKIT" five years after bizkit's last hit

Mr. Stevensome #dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Monday, 5 December 2011 16:06 (twelve years ago) link

'but if the lyrics are constantly positioning the artist as a breath of fresh air'

surely the first rapper to try this

iatee, Monday, 5 December 2011 16:08 (twelve years ago) link

oh i make fun of other rappers that do this too -- drake sneering "A LOT OF Y'ALL SOUNDING LIKE LAST YEAR" over a 808s & heartbreak knockoff in 2009 was classic

Mr. Stevensome #dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Monday, 5 December 2011 16:11 (twelve years ago) link

Criticizing someone for acting like they are revolutionary when they sound exactly like everyone else around them is one thing; a hoy hoy's statement probably meant that, but it isn't what it actually said.

OH NOES, Monday, 5 December 2011 16:12 (twelve years ago) link

is 'what he is currently saying is not 100% true' really a tool w/ which you can critique rap music.

iatee, Monday, 5 December 2011 16:14 (twelve years ago) link

like if he was rapping about how his flow is pretty lol and he's bringing nothing new to the game and his punchlines aren't funny - would that improve this music

also, don't answer that

iatee, Monday, 5 December 2011 16:16 (twelve years ago) link

well he does rap about how people THINK he's wack like that

Mr. Stevensome #dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Monday, 5 December 2011 16:17 (twelve years ago) link

would it be okay with everyone if i just edit every message on this thread to "this dude sucks" and then lock thread?

^ thinks 'Texts from Bennett' is funny

iatee, Monday, 5 December 2011 16:20 (twelve years ago) link

Ok al's limp bizkit thing was more otm of what i was trying to say. But seriously, trying to act like some sort of refreshing voice and that you know more about the genre when you sound generic and dont know whut yr doing is just going to make you look like a twat.

big popppa hoy, Monday, 5 December 2011 16:30 (twelve years ago) link

i bet jon/via/chi would find Childish Gambino a refreshing voice in hip-hop

c'mon dude total out-of-context pointless picking on somebody who's not even here (probably BECAUSE he was feeling picked on, whether justified or not) is beyond the pale for even you

I owe him at least a dozen pointless attacks for all the times he was shitting on me in a place where I could rack up suggbans for responding to his dumb bullshit
