Hongkou Stadium

444 Dongjiangwan Lu. Hongkou District.

Category

Description
Chinese Super League action.

Please note, exact kick-off times are liable to change. Check the club website at www.shenhuafc.com.cn for confirmation just before match day. The official site is in Chinese but the next match details are on the front page and the match time is in 24-hour format and easy to spot.

HOW TO GET TO THE STADIUM:

Take line 3 or line 8 metro to Hongkou Football Stadium Station, then head toward the huge bowl-like structure dominating the neighbourhood.

HOW TO GET TICKETS:

Usually there are plenty available from scalpers on the streets - only the biggest games, against Beijing, Dalian or Shandong may sell out, and even then there's usually tickets still available. You'll be approached several times on the way to the ground, so if you can't get one for 30rmb or less from the first guys you meet, walk away and try your luck with the next sellers. If you are late and the game has already kicked off, you can get them much cheaper, below 20rmb in some cases.

reading the thorn tree and getting some advice, worth a repost for future reference:

strikingsunset just listed a nice big list of bars I'd put a "avoid avoid avoid" list - especially anything near Tongren Lu and Big Bamboo (although admittedly Blue Frog has an excellent burger, but I'd just as soon avoid the entire Tongren Lu scene and go to the one on Maoming or Lujiazhui)

If you want to hang out at the nicest bars in Shanghai (which, conversely attract the biggest wankers in town) - any of the bars on the Bund - Attica, Glamour Bar, Bar Rouge, De La Coast. If you have the money to spare, I at least recommend going to one of those places at least once. They ARE the nicest bars in town, despite being populated by wankers. The views make it worthwhile.

As for me? I like laid back, chill places. outdoors at Face. Cotton's. Mao. Yongfoo Elite. The Spot is okay, even though it's near Malone's. Mint. Volar.

jergins, Thursday, 26 June 2008 20:45 (fifteen years ago) link

If you need a sobering moment, you can continue your sightseeing by taking the subway's Line 3.
It's elevated for most of the way, a great way to get a city overview come rain, hail or shine, and will even return you to your drinking hole in time for the next shout.

jergins, Thursday, 26 June 2008 20:54 (fifteen years ago) link

The area around Julu Lu and Fumin Lu has come up again recently - used to be trashy bars but it's imprved of late. It also tends to avoid the slighly toursity/businessman feel of the Bund bars (though i must admit to a liking for Glamour Bar).

I also love Velvet Lounge, Tara, People 7, JZ Club, Cotton Club.....

glamour bar, bar rouge, fenestre, maybe some of those places up at the New Factories. Face is good too - but it's not quite as current. Guandii and bonbon for clubbing.

Melting Pot at 288,Tai Kang Lu (off Sinan lu or Maoming lu)

It has mainly Chinese bands playing every night. A friends band (western) plays blues on Sunday Nights and there is a jam night every Monday.
Quote:
"Bar 288, The Melting Pot is located on Tai Kang Lu, known as the Art-Street of Shanghai. Every night from 9:30 you can enjoy live-music from around the world and meet people from around the world. Bar 288 really lives up to its name The Melting Pot, it has an open stage and is the favorite place for musicians to jam."

Also 4 Live at 8 Jian Guo Zhong Lu near Chong Qing Nan Lu. It always has great local/western/mixed bands playing as well as a lot of dj/hip hop events (such as the very famous, best party in Shanghai, 'Bananas' parties). They usually post their upcoming events on Smart Shanghai.

You will NEVER find a Filipino covers band playing at these bars, they are not expensive to drink at (especially 4 live) and Melting Pot never has door charges (that I have come across).

some reviewer calls this the best vegetarian restaraunt in shanghai. i guess a lot of monks hang out there:

Vegetarian Lifestyle
枣子树, (1) 848 Huangjin Cheng Dao, near Shuicheng Nan Lu (6275 1798); (2) 77 Songshan Lu, near Huaihai Zhong Lu (6384 8000); (3) 258 Fengxian Lu, near Jiangning Lu (6215 7566). (1) 黄金城道848号,靠近水城南路; (2) 嵩山路77号,靠近淮海中路; (3) 奉贤路258号,靠近江宁路

i am not a man prone to grand statements (no, really), but that was the single worst cabride of my life last night.

i didn't think i was going to die but i was sure there'd be an accident and recriminations and somehow we'd be blamed, because we'd never have gone on that route had it not been for our destination. i could see the cabbie and cops yelling, the other driver irate because it was our driver's fault.

then we tipped him, 2 fucking dollars, just to get out of the car on the wrong side of the river.

jergins, Saturday, 5 July 2008 11:25 (fifteen years ago) link

never have gone on that route

we'd never have gone on that route if i'd been driving. how can i know the city better, after a week, than this fool?

babyshit tofu followed by ice cream of indeterminate fruit flavor. not durian but that would have at least had some once-in-a-lifetime cachet. this was just...ice cream you don't want to have.

"And finally, there’s the stinky tofu. Wafting down every alley and byway in Taipei is the unmistakable and often appalling odor of this unusual food. The grilled sausages and squid, with their smoke and flame, are the most visible street food in Taipei, but they are not the most aromatic.

The effect of stinky tofu on Westerners is a universal wrinkling of the nose, such as a Chinese person might feel after stumbling into a cheese factory. Summoning up some courage, I ate a piece of stinky tofu, albeit well-smothered in soy, vinegar, garlic and chili sauce. It has a sharp flavour, not at all similar to the smell. And how does it taste? You won’t know until you give it a try." so says travelintelligence.com
