its def a grower -- hes def not a flashy rapper in any way. if any of yall are feeling cormega, he's like a midwest version of that

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Saturday, 3 December 2011 09:46 (twelve years ago) link

my problem w/ regional thug is the implication that as a category none of these artists deserve your attention, or that they're the fucking rap equiv of jerk music or something, or that they are permanently exiled to being less-covered than g-side when imo there's a huge variety w/in that stupid little bubble

but interpret it as me being 'butthurt' even though that makes no sense if you want

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Saturday, 3 December 2011 09:47 (twelve years ago) link

i'm ok with this being a year-end thread, as long as at least a few of you are willing to discuss /check out the rapper mentioned at the top; his album is one i've come back to a lot

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Saturday, 3 December 2011 09:48 (twelve years ago) link

'regional thug' is just straight up disrespectful frankly

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Saturday, 3 December 2011 09:50 (twelve years ago) link

who's the producer on these boldy james tracks? it's got a nice premier feel to it.

Dranke, the German Drake Impersonator (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 3 December 2011 17:12 (twelve years ago) link

well at least the second one does.

Dranke, the German Drake Impersonator (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 3 December 2011 17:13 (twelve years ago) link

"Concrete Connie" is produced by Brains, "I Sold Dope All My Life" is produced by The Plug. I don't really hear the Premier thing on "Concrete Connie" too much. Maybe it's because I know Boldy's from Detroit but to me this is in that same vein of cracked/distorted-street-soul music as Dilla's overall vibe w/out sounding particularly dilla-ish

oh c'mon you are so butthurt.

'regional' has NEVER been pejorative in rap, it just means an artist that has the kind of LOCAL STREET LEVEL FOLLOWING that you value so much

it is a pejorative when a wide variety of artists are lumped into a category called 'regional THUGS' while certain particular artists are put into noble categores like 'hard working weedheads' and 'blue color rappers.' im angry about the lack of respect shown by the chart for history & for perspective, that doesn't make me 'butthurt' & any time someone is angry you guys throw around 'butthurt!!!' like you've scored major points

yeah i'm as shocked as anyone. on his record there's even a cool kid guest verse (an asher roth one would have been distracting but i don't really have a problem w/ michael rocks, i actually really liked "cell dope" from earlier this year)

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Sunday, 4 December 2011 21:19 (twelve years ago) link

also fwiw i disagree that regional thug = has a big following, it's obviously true of a few artists on there but it isn't the case of boldy james particularly -- i mean he has fans, but not like the jacka does where he can live off regional money (at least not yet) nor do i see why having been smart enough to develop a scene regionally makes one a 'regional thug' as if its a permanent albatross to be hung around their necks

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Sunday, 4 December 2011 21:22 (twelve years ago) link

im angry about the lack of respect shown by the chart

this is why you're hilarious fyi

i kind of agree with this. more than anything using 'thug' perjoratively in this context attempts to dismiss gangster rap as a whole as dated or irrelevant; in a sense maybe it is, given what's popular on the charts and judging by what's getting the high-profile critical love

k3vin k., Sunday, 4 December 2011 21:38 (twelve years ago) link

it might've been an inadvertent slight

why is that hilarious to you? these are artists trying to make careers & i certainly dont think they're above making fun of, but this was irresponsible imo

it's funny that you're still worked up over a SPIN magazine chart that will have zero real world impact

v-shasty, Sunday, 4 December 2011 21:44 (twelve years ago) link

by what measure? by the measure of music writing? in that case we might as well give up now bcuz none of us will ever have real world impact, who reads blogs, lol

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Sunday, 4 December 2011 21:44 (twelve years ago) link

+ there are actual insults on that chart, i don't think "regional thugs and coke rappers" is one of them

v-shasty, Sunday, 4 December 2011 21:45 (twelve years ago) link

well, you're wrong, it is one

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Sunday, 4 December 2011 21:45 (twelve years ago) link

we've gone over this before but the variety of artists in there is like 10x that of other categories, to me its not journalistic or historically responsible, i guess those arent concerns for you which is fine but i don't see why its wrong for me to say this or for you to think i'm overreacting or w/e

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Sunday, 4 December 2011 21:46 (twelve years ago) link

i mean it's not WRONG for you to say it, but it does make you look very petty

over half of the artists get "dismissed" on that chart -- it's mildly snarky -- it's really not a big deal

er AB is an example of the former obv, poorly placed parenthetical

i knew m@tt would like the boldy james "pumpin gas" track, that shit is like ground zero 90s rap-a-lot shit, down to the standoff storytelling rap at the dice game that is so straightforward on a narrative level ("he shot (BANG BANG) I shot (RATATATAT) -- as you can see i cold smoked his ass") and yet the rapping itself is not in any way cartoonish
