i kinda wanted to give that review a standing ovation at my desk

finally, someone has the courage to stand up to the overwhelming musical force that is childish gambino.

the review was funny but dude is an "actor/rapper" with a stupid name that people have been mocking since he turned into a rapper. no one really likes his music. it's like zinging dr. morbius, it's kinda fun but too easy to be satisfying.

i guess, i don't know. he just sold 50,000 albums in one week, so some people like his music.

I'd honestly love to see the breakdown of that 50k in terms of how many people had been following his stuff via blogs and how many bought it because "oh, dude from Community. I'd hazard about 20% the former, 80% the latter.

DJ Quik sells 15k and this guy sells 50k :(

tbh I bought it, not because I expected to like it, but because I figured Community was getting cancelled after this year and I wanted to throw dude some royalties

basically n/a's point (if he actually has one) is that the review while, funny, was pointless because nobody actually cares about childish gambino or thinks that his music is good. i think there is ample evidence that both of those things are untrue.

I bought because my wife asked me to when she saw it was out, she hates it more than I do.

i don't have much of a point aside from the album's an easy target so pitchfork's zingy review doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me

also i will stubbornly and steadfastly insist that no one likes his music, despite any and all evidence to the contrary

i do wanna contribute for real tho that we were watching his recent comedy central performance and it was very poor. some of the material was funny, and we laughed a couple times. but this guy wrote on one of the tightest, funniest sitcoms of the last bunch of years, and is hilarious acting on Community, but just could not consistently put it together on the stage and maybe p4k is onto something that he's very insecure bc he really just seemed to lack confidence and experience in the standup. very nervous seeming.

i'm very interested in hearing the WTF he recorded recently

I guess we should be thankful that there was a whole writing staff on 30 Rock and not just him.

tbh I have a good amount of empathy for him when he expresses frustration with disconnect between his experiences in "black" and "white" America since I've felt a lot of those some emotions and frustrations and it's not really something you're going to understand unless you've gone through something similar, but when he starts talking about "eating Oreos like the white girls that be blowin' me" I have to tap out

I haven't heard any of this dude's music, but the supposedly "terrible" lyrics that everyone is posting on this thread and in I.Co's P4k review seem kind of clever/funny IMO.

I have only heard one of his songs via the radio and the beat was pretty annoying and I'm not gonna listen to anything else

but imo a lot of these lines are more clever than lines serious hiphop ppl quote as great

I listened to this again and "Outside" is actually fine. Every other song has at least one "OH HELL NO *stops playback*" moment in it, though.

this albums looks like the musical equivalent of someone who says "LOL" in real life conversation

This is not clever by any means.

And I do think it's important that we continue to point out the creepy misogyny that is buried beneath this "aww shucks I'm just a nerd into pop culture" demeanor.

I think it's kinda clever! Intertextuality, man.
