i have no insight into wilson's mental state, but that o'hagan story is now close to 20 years old isn't it? looks like (from the outside) wilson is surrounded by more supportive people these days? could be totally wrong, I don't know. and he seemed genuinely into the gershwin record.

i saw the Beach Boys in april of 2010. but it might as well have been the John Stamos show, as he was there that night playing drums and guitar, and Love kept parading him out on stage, even performing "Forever" with Jesse singing lead as he did on Full House with the Rippers.

Alternatively, Brian Wilson at the Bridge Benefit a few years ago was everything you'd want a Beach Boys concert to be. Fucking glorious.

I have an irrational hatred for Mike Love except when he's singing on old Beach Boys songs that I love. Seems like such a massive douchecanoe to me. Even just looking at him, I'm like, ugh.

Well yes, no doubt he loves Gershwin but in his (rather uncomfortable) interview on Britain's legendary The One Show (don't ask) I'm sure he said it was either his record company or his manager's idea to do the album. Not that it matters anyway, I say again, beats singing backup for Status Quo!

The Beach Boys have already recorded several songs for their new album, to be released in 2012 by Capitol/EMI, with more tracks to be recorded before its completion. The as-yet-untitled album, the first to feature all of the band’s surviving original members in decades, is being produced by Brian Wilson and executive produced by Mike Love.

The Beach Boys and Capitol/EMI have also teamed up for a 50th Anniversary campaign spotlighting the band’s entire catalog, with several new commemorative releases planned for 2012, including a new hits collection and a career-spanning box set.

Founded in Hawthorne, California in 1961, The Beach Boys were originally comprised of the three teenaged Wilson brothers: Brian, Carl and Dennis, their cousin Mike Love, and school friend Al Jardine. In 1962, neighbor David Marks joined the group for their first wave of hits on Capitol Records, leaving in late 1963, and in 1965, Bruce Johnston joined the band when Brian Wilson retired from touring to focus on writing and producing records for the group. For five decades, America’s first pop band to reach the 50 year milestone has recorded and performed the music that has become the world’s favorite soundtrack to summer.

The Beach Boys signed with Capitol Records in July 1962 and released their first album, Surfin’ Safari, that same year. The album spent 37 weeks on the Billboard chart, launching the young group known for its shimmering vocal harmonies and relaxed California style into international stardom. The Wilson/Love collaboration resulted in many huge international chart hits, and under Brian Wilson’s musical leadership, the band’s initial surf-rock focus was soon broadened to include other themes, making The Beach Boys America’s preeminent band of the 1960s.

whadayaknow, the wife got me the Smile box set for Hannukah

on first cursory listen the most interesting thing is noticing the odd bits and pieces that got recycled later on, like some brief melody in an outtake from Heroes & Villains popping up in American Spring's "Sweet Mountain"

in some ways it's reminiscent of Lou Reed - huge burst of drug-fueled creativity within a brief period that got thoroughly mined (and re-mined) over the succeeding decades

i've seen a youtube clip of the surf's up segment...but a quick search suggests its been taken down from youtube? what's weird is that I think the whole "bernstein says surf's up is the greatest song ever" or whatevs is misattributed. i think it's someone else on the show who says it, not bernstein.

My parents probably didn't know anything about what the BB looked like. And I was really young. We had a blanket on the lawn and I fell asleep before the concert was over. I imagine that we saw them before '98 because I wasn't in high school yet

I remember as a kid being at the traditional 4th of July free Beach Boys concert on the National Mall in DC in 1980 or '81. Brian wasn't there, but Dennis was (I taped it). A couple of years later, then-interior secretary James Watt infamously banned the rock bands like the Beach Boys from playing on the mall on Independence Day, claiming they encouraged drug use and alcoholism and had attracted "the wrong element" to the picnics, instead substituting Las Vegas crooner Wayne Newton. This was widely criticized, including by President Reagan who was a Beach Boys fan himself. The ban was lifted the next year and the Beach Boys returned; some fans in the audience were holding up signs proudly proclaiming themselves to be "The Wrong Element".

Bernstein championed anything in music he felt was important or noteworthy (cf. seeing Ornette Coleman at the Five Spot, standing up and declaring, "This is the greatest thing that has ever happened to jazz!")

His hosting a TV special about rock was no doubt a bid to convince John Q. Squaresville of the "legitimacy" of this damn hippie racket, but nothing suggests Bernstein wasn't sincere about his affection for the music.

(also, was West Side Story "classical"? I'm not saying it was or it wasn't; I've just never heard it referred to as such)

I'm far from familiar with Bernstein's work, so I checked out his wiki page and didn't see any references to him liking rock, and when I've heard him mentioned IRL he was usually conduction an orchestra. I put "to my knowledge" in my earlier post for that reason though - he obviously did dabble in rock occasionally.

I'm a big fan of "modal" music too (keys other than the usual major or minor).... "Along Comes Mary", which of course is all about smoking weed, was written by Tandyn Almer who was friends with Brian and co-wrote "Sail On, Sailer" and "Marcella".
