That review is really OTM

I would still rather listen to this than Dranke

OH NOES, Friday, 2 December 2011 14:58 (twelve years ago) link

i've never heard this guy's music or watched that show but the likelihood of me doing either after reading that review is now close to zero.

To be fair, his work on Community would give you absolutely no clue that he is also a terrible, rape-y rapper. I wouldn't condemn the show for his shitty vanity project.

ty for this joke

HOOS aka driver of steen, Friday, 2 December 2011 15:31 (twelve years ago) link

If we were out of sandbox, "Dranke, the German Drake Impersonator" would be my DN right now.

Not to start this conversation yet again, but Community is pretty dire as well.

forksclovetofu, Friday, 2 December 2011 16:22 (twelve years ago) link

the first line of that review is fire

man, i hope so

I do now.

i kinda wanted to give that review a standing ovation at my desk

upper mississippi 2: still shakin, Friday, 2 December 2011 17:22 (twelve years ago) link

finally, someone has the courage to stand up to the overwhelming musical force that is childish gambino.

n/a, Friday, 2 December 2011 17:25 (twelve years ago) link

he's gotten good reviews and sold big numbers for someone on an indie label?

v-shasty, Friday, 2 December 2011 17:31 (twelve years ago) link

lol n/a, I thought for sure you were linking a negative review that was using Tiananmen Square as an analogy

OH NOES, Friday, 2 December 2011 17:32 (twelve years ago) link

the review was funny but dude is an "actor/rapper" with a stupid name that people have been mocking since he turned into a rapper. no one really likes his music. it's like zinging dr. morbius, it's kinda fun but too easy to be satisfying.

n/a, Friday, 2 December 2011 17:37 (twelve years ago) link

i guess, i don't know. he just sold 50,000 albums in one week, so some people like his music.

v-shasty, Friday, 2 December 2011 17:54 (twelve years ago) link

eh, I bought one of those copies and I don't really like his music

OH NOES, Friday, 2 December 2011 17:55 (twelve years ago) link

I'd honestly love to see the breakdown of that 50k in terms of how many people had been following his stuff via blogs and how many bought it because "oh, dude from Community. I'd hazard about 20% the former, 80% the latter.

I left my login in El Sandboxo, Friday, 2 December 2011 17:56 (twelve years ago) link

DJ Quik sells 15k and this guy sells 50k :(

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 2 December 2011 17:58 (twelve years ago) link

tbh I bought it, not because I expected to like it, but because I figured Community was getting cancelled after this year and I wanted to throw dude some royalties

OH NOES, Friday, 2 December 2011 17:58 (twelve years ago) link

basically n/a's point (if he actually has one) is that the review while, funny, was pointless because nobody actually cares about childish gambino or thinks that his music is good. i think there is ample evidence that both of those things are untrue.

v-shasty, Friday, 2 December 2011 17:58 (twelve years ago) link

I bought because my wife asked me to when she saw it was out, she hates it more than I do.

I left my login in El Sandboxo, Friday, 2 December 2011 18:00 (twelve years ago) link

i don't have much of a point aside from the album's an easy target so pitchfork's zingy review doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me

n/a, Friday, 2 December 2011 18:02 (twelve years ago) link

also i will stubbornly and steadfastly insist that no one likes his music, despite any and all evidence to the contrary

n/a, Friday, 2 December 2011 18:03 (twelve years ago) link

^^ secretly likes childish gambino

dr. strongo, Friday, 2 December 2011 18:06 (twelve years ago) link

Now if dude who plays Abed had a 'comedy' 'record', I'd happily throw him some bones. Childish Shitbino is gonna be fine.

yo so like if someone - a friend of mine - liked this album kinda, this would definitely not be the thread to cop to that, right?

theoretically saying. of course.

lol

OH NOES, Friday, 2 December 2011 20:20 (twelve years ago) link

i do wanna contribute for real tho that we were watching his recent comedy central performance and it was very poor. some of the material was funny, and we laughed a couple times. but this guy wrote on one of the tightest, funniest sitcoms of the last bunch of years, and is hilarious acting on Community, but just could not consistently put it together on the stage and maybe p4k is onto something that he's very insecure bc he really just seemed to lack confidence and experience in the standup. very nervous seeming.

Mordy, Friday, 2 December 2011 20:27 (twelve years ago) link

i'm very interested in hearing the WTF he recorded recently

Mordy, Friday, 2 December 2011 20:29 (twelve years ago) link

I guess we should be thankful that there was a whole writing staff on 30 Rock and not just him.

I left my login in El Sandboxo, Friday, 2 December 2011 20:29 (twelve years ago) link

tbh I have a good amount of empathy for him when he expresses frustration with disconnect between his experiences in "black" and "white" America since I've felt a lot of those some emotions and frustrations and it's not really something you're going to understand unless you've gone through something similar, but when he starts talking about "eating Oreos like the white girls that be blowin' me" I have to tap out

OH NOES, Friday, 2 December 2011 21:12 (twelve years ago) link

I haven't heard any of this dude's music, but the supposedly "terrible" lyrics that everyone is posting on this thread and in I.Co's P4k review seem kind of clever/funny IMO.

shocking developments today as a person who is not famous sells fewer albums than a person who is somewhat famous

n/a, Friday, 2 December 2011 21:29 (twelve years ago) link

oh cmon, you know exactly what the point is there and it's not that.

Dranke, the German Drake Impersonator (forksclovetofu), Friday, 2 December 2011 21:33 (twelve years ago) link

um, DJ Quik is pretty famous, arguably more famous with ppl who buy rap albums than Donald Glover

the real uncovered shocker here is "ppl who don't normally buy rap albums buy a terrible one"

OH NOES, Friday, 2 December 2011 21:33 (twelve years ago) link

I have only heard one of his songs via the radio and the beat was pretty annoying and I'm not gonna listen to anything else

but imo a lot of these lines are more clever than lines serious hiphop ppl quote as great

iatee, Friday, 2 December 2011 21:34 (twelve years ago) link

"ppl who don't normally buy rap albums buy a terrible one"

yeah this is the part I was befuddled by

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 2 December 2011 21:51 (twelve years ago) link

I listened to this again and "Outside" is actually fine. Every other song has at least one "OH HELL NO *stops playback*" moment in it, though.

OH NOES, Friday, 2 December 2011 21:54 (twelve years ago) link

this albums looks like the musical equivalent of someone who says "LOL" in real life conversation
