It does suddenly occur to me that MySQL ships with a 4gb limit. I'm sure that must have been raised at some point in the past, however, but the DB is about 4gb as it stands.

There's a 4gb limit on table size in MySQL, but not on the db itself.

MySQL hasn't had that limit since v3.22. Might be a problem with Linux file size limit?

Might be a problem with Linux file size limit?

It's unlikely - the main file size problem hits at 2G, and I'd have thought that if ILX is approaching 4G the largest table would already have passed the 2G point.

In any case, few systems still have the 2G limit.

Currently the DB (MySQL on Linux) is in itself apparently broken -- from the outside it appears it is not responding correctly to updates, inserts or selects.

Has something happened to the permissions for the database user? Is there a size limit on the share where the db is?

I am in awe of people using this time to make xmas gifts! I've just been filling time with more cups of tea.

It looks as if some checks that were run yesterday (which should have been completely safe) sent it haywire. Then the searches to refill New Answers compounded things.

Just now best opinion is that it won't work until somebody with server access restarts the DB server.
