It's the complete absence of material to speculate on the cause that's the thing xps. You imagine you know a bit about people's lives because you watch them play or like their music or books or whatever, then something like this happens and you realise you don't know a thing.

sorry chris, my 'let's be hasty' was a glib response to your entirely sensible 'there's more to life than football' comment, born out of a couple of people pointing out to me just how much time i spend watching, reading, thinking about the game etc

I agree with both Chris and Deems about Lucas really, Dalglish shouldn't have played him but the fact he felt he had to play him so much is the result of some dodgy squad-building. Stand up Mr Comolli and yr blindspot in defensive midfield.

Matt DC, Thursday, 1 December 2011 18:16 (twelve years ago) link

matt has hit upon the solution. a move for zokora in january.

pandemic, Thursday, 1 December 2011 18:20 (twelve years ago) link

ah got it, no worries mate. (xposts)

Chris, Thursday, 1 December 2011 18:28 (twelve years ago) link

Comolli and Dalglish obviously felt at the start of the season that Spearing would be a suitable stand in (I assume that Spearing is our Lucas-in-waiting - there's no-on else it could possibly be). I don't see it myself, but there you go. Could of course play without a DM, but I'm guessing that would require the defence not to drop off and to squeeze the space left by where your covering midfielder would have been, which didn't happen against Norwich (see their goal).

Chris, Thursday, 1 December 2011 18:34 (twelve years ago) link

argh, someone change the subject

Chris, Thursday, 1 December 2011 18:37 (twelve years ago) link

regarding Speed & depression in football, this article just popped up about an MLS/Bundesliga player & his battles with depression, it's a good read

Cuauhtemoc Blanco, Thursday, 1 December 2011 19:09 (twelve years ago) link

Really quite poignant

M. White, Thursday, 1 December 2011 19:21 (twelve years ago) link

interesting article but the way it's written makes it seem that he was dealing with personal and professional problems rather than dealing with clinical depression.

mizzell, Thursday, 1 December 2011 19:34 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, your wife leaving you with your child does not make you depressed, it makes you sad.

jim in glasgow, Thursday, 1 December 2011 19:41 (twelve years ago) link

Peter Reid was 4th in the Fifa World Soccer player of the year award 1985 behind only Michel Platini, Preban Elkjaer & Diego Maradona.

I let this go by earlier, but is this for real?

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 1 December 2011 21:14 (twelve years ago) link

sundland job MON's to turn down and neil lennon said 'penchant'

Sad Banter (p much resigned to deems), Thursday, 1 December 2011 21:40 (twelve years ago) link

that's not the most recondite term ever uttered by a fitba manager rite?

nakhchivan, Thursday, 1 December 2011 21:43 (twelve years ago) link

it just struck me tbh

Sad Banter (p much resigned to deems), Thursday, 1 December 2011 21:45 (twelve years ago) link

o'neill will probably get sunderland to 8th place finishes for the next 239 years

nakhchivan, Thursday, 1 December 2011 21:47 (twelve years ago) link

does not make you depressed, it makes you sad

When you're sad enough to repeatedly consider suicide...

M. White, Thursday, 1 December 2011 21:48 (twelve years ago) link

considering or even committing suicide doesn't mean you are clinically depressed

Maybe go to my place and just kick it like Chris Sutton used to
And possibly bend you over look back and watch me

Season that 'till you get sore
Fry that oh-oooh!

big popppa hoy, Friday, 2 December 2011 06:47 (twelve years ago) link

u guys

nakhchivan, Friday, 2 December 2011 13:32 (twelve years ago) link

i had this idea that we should select a random* established but undernoticed EPL player and devote a thread to them, follow their career in depth kinda thing

* except they can't be /that/ random, it has to be someone aggressively average and self-effacing and a byword for ordinariness

nakhchivan, Friday, 2 December 2011 13:36 (twelve years ago) link

like?

Sad Banter (p much resigned to deems), Friday, 2 December 2011 13:37 (twelve years ago) link

leighton baines would have been great circa 2008 when he was just an average midtable fullback with valuable cultural interests who was only ever alluded to when ppl said things like 'sounds like a town in bedfordshire', which was considered to be quite amusing back then

nakhchivan, Friday, 2 December 2011 13:38 (twelve years ago) link

it's basically got to be a fullback or defensive midfielder, stephen warnock or nigel reo-coker or something

nakhchivan, Friday, 2 December 2011 13:39 (twelve years ago) link

Anton Ferdinand

Tony Hart land (Deep in the Tony Hart land), Friday, 2 December 2011 13:40 (twelve years ago) link

'self effacing'

Sad Banter (p much resigned to deems), Friday, 2 December 2011 13:41 (twelve years ago) link

Is he not? Must admit I've never taken a black bit of notice of him before.

Tony Hart land (Deep in the Tony Hart land), Friday, 2 December 2011 13:42 (twelve years ago) link

yah he got cleared of assault for pre-emptively....hitting someone he thought was eyeing up his £50k watch iirc

nakhchivan, Friday, 2 December 2011 13:42 (twelve years ago) link

i mean find a self-effacing epl player

Sad Banter (p much resigned to deems), Friday, 2 December 2011 13:47 (twelve years ago) link

I don't know, most of them probably are

Tony Hart land (Deep in the Tony Hart land), Friday, 2 December 2011 13:49 (twelve years ago) link

Looking forward to the draw for the Euros later. England would be nice

Number None, Friday, 2 December 2011 13:55 (twelve years ago) link

no they wouldn't

Sad Banter (p much resigned to deems), Friday, 2 December 2011 13:57 (twelve years ago) link

Course they would. Spirit of 88 and all that, not that i remember it

Number None, Friday, 2 December 2011 14:00 (twelve years ago) link

Why didn't they make, say, Ireland and Czech Republic top seeds with Poland & Ukraine, instead of the malformed grouping they came up with?

Ismael Klata, Friday, 2 December 2011 14:01 (twelve years ago) link

Come now, England + Ireland would be great

Tony Hart land (Deep in the Tony Hart land), Friday, 2 December 2011 14:02 (twelve years ago) link

O'Neill for Sunderland btw

Tony Hart land (Deep in the Tony Hart land), Friday, 2 December 2011 14:02 (twelve years ago) link

'agrees'

Tony Hart land (Deep in the Tony Hart land), Friday, 2 December 2011 14:03 (twelve years ago) link

england would not be nice tho, they hardly ever are imce

Sad Banter (p much resigned to deems), Friday, 2 December 2011 14:04 (twelve years ago) link

He 'agreed' to take West Ham too iirc, and Leeds back in the day.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 2 December 2011 14:05 (twelve years ago) link

Strange how the press uses quote marks to signify that something isn't a quote.

onimo, Friday, 2 December 2011 14:06 (twelve years ago) link

Must admit did not know about O'Neill's tenure as manager of Shepshed Charterhouse

Tony Hart land (Deep in the Tony Hart land), Friday, 2 December 2011 14:12 (twelve years ago) link

We want someone from Swansea or Norwich maybe?

Also George Elokobi always seems like a good dude.

Matt DC, Friday, 2 December 2011 14:39 (twelve years ago) link

Wes Hoolahan

Number None, Friday, 2 December 2011 14:41 (twelve years ago) link

The self-effacing Irishman with a name like the rootin'est tootin'est gunslinger west of the Pecos?

Tony Hart land (Deep in the Tony Hart land), Friday, 2 December 2011 14:45 (twelve years ago) link

I'm going to assume he's self-effacing since he only left the League of Ireland in his mid-twenties

Number None, Friday, 2 December 2011 14:48 (twelve years ago) link
