As far as EPMD goes, it doesn't get much better than crossover. Supposedly the Roger Troutman record it samples had barely even hit the shelves.

well, I like Back in Business but at least a 1/4 of it is either remakes of old songs or unnecessary remixes. the first half is pretty great though.

i remember randomly meeting a friend of mine after his last exam at McGill in Montreal when he was all fucked up on mushrooms, and walking down ste catherine street with him. For some reason all he could do was try to quote EPDM lyrics, but he kept fucking them all up like: "I'm a Locksmith! And you're a green beret!". But then we went to get a slice of pizza and he started doing all these pizza lines from "Mona Lisa" in a fucked up effeminate Slick Rick voice, like "My gosh, ya look nice! Put away your money, I'll buy yur slice!" to these mean-looking quebecois metal dudes. Why do I have perfect recall of the most useless moments of my life? Anyway, it was funny.

what's more -- and for which they are to be credited -- that even as their beats changed somewhat over time (to match changing fashions), they STILL maintained their individuality throughout. even when, as on out of business, they invited folks like redman & method man to appeal to newer audiences or (from business as usual onwards) their lyrics got more "street" (translation -- they started cussing and talking more about guns, a stylistic tip of the hat to NWA?) -- throughout all that, they still remained Erick and Parrish most interested in girls and dissing any MCs not as skilled as they were.
