As Darragh said, that's not how depression works. More to life than football.

let's not be hasty

lucas out for the season

*screams*
*bangs head on desk repeatedly*

pandemic, Thursday, 1 December 2011 15:36 (twelve years ago) link

yup, great idea playing him so soon after city. him, reina, enrique and henderson shouldn't have been anywhere near stamford bridge on tuesday.

Chris, Thursday, 1 December 2011 15:37 (twelve years ago) link

not like he got subbed off after an hour either

pandemic, Thursday, 1 December 2011 15:38 (twelve years ago) link

stupid him starting anyway, but he should've been off as soon as that second goal went in. really angry about this.

Chris, Thursday, 1 December 2011 15:39 (twelve years ago) link

i'd

and i hasten to say this isn't fight-picking

imagine that, having spent several gdp's on central midfielders, if lfc are that badly off because one is out injured, dalglish might have some explaining to do.

Bruce for Liverpool

Tony Hart land (Deep in the Tony Hart land), Thursday, 1 December 2011 15:53 (twelve years ago) link

am i missing the point completely? scientific research has shown that the body is more susceptible to all injuries if you do not get sufficient rest. there is no way lucas should have been playing on tuesday. correct? so why is every liverpool fan on t'internet refusing to acknowledge that it was daft to play him. am i missing something?

Chris, Thursday, 1 December 2011 15:55 (twelve years ago) link

ha, no, not quite to that stage as yet.

Sad Banter (p much resigned to deems), Thursday, 1 December 2011 15:55 (twelve years ago) link

xp

I dunno chris, a game on sunday, a game on tuesday, lyfe man y'know?

Was it an impact injury or did it just go?

Sad Banter (p much resigned to deems), Thursday, 1 December 2011 15:56 (twelve years ago) link

he bumped into a chelsea player, pretty innocuous.

pandemic, Thursday, 1 December 2011 15:58 (twelve years ago) link

looked like impact with mata. optimal rest time is supposed to be 72 hours isn't it? now i aint claiming to be an expert, but playing someone who hasn't had a summer's rest as often as we've been playing him, and then playing him twice in 3 days is surely asking for trouble? gah.

Chris, Thursday, 1 December 2011 15:58 (twelve years ago) link

it's about minimising the risk

Chris, Thursday, 1 December 2011 16:01 (twelve years ago) link

but i kinda side with chris on this. lucas, pepe, and suarez are our 3 most important players by far and lucas was immense against City.

I mean dalglish can't have it both ways, railing against the short period between games saying he'd have no alternative but to play kids cos of the short recovery period, then starting with lucas and leaving him on for 80+ mins. He was obviously taking the chance that lucas could have 6 days rest before we played again on monday, but, well..

pandemic, Thursday, 1 December 2011 16:03 (twelve years ago) link

but it still wasn't a huge risk, tbf- it hardly happens the whole time

A blind day for British football.

aldo, Thursday, 1 December 2011 16:07 (twelve years ago) link

tbf when i watched the highlights i only knew the score, not that lucas had been taken off, and when they went through the teams at the start mentioning the changes and lucas appered on the team sheet i did think 'really?' but i wasn't outraged at the time or anything.

I am more sad than angry I think. I save my anger for every time I watch Milan and Aquilani plays well, which is more often than not ;)

Because his manager is Kenny Dalglish perhaps? Hodgson would probably have been lynched by now.

Tony Hart land (Deep in the Tony Hart land), Thursday, 1 December 2011 16:09 (twelve years ago) link

It was though. He hasn't had a rest all summer, he played all the previous rounds, and he hasn't been rotated. He's been managed terribly. The science is pretty clear.

Chris, Thursday, 1 December 2011 16:22 (twelve years ago) link

xp. is exactly my thinking. i wouldn't dare utter it on an lfc forum though.

Chris, Thursday, 1 December 2011 16:22 (twelve years ago) link

he bumped into a chelsea player, pretty innocuous.

you said it yourself mate. innocuous. yet he's out for the rest of the season.

Chris, Thursday, 1 December 2011 16:24 (twelve years ago) link

If Terry is found guilty, he could lose the England captaincy

Argh! Why is this reported as if it's the most serious consequence of the whole affair? John Terry may really care about the armband, but the world in general does not.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 1 December 2011 16:25 (twelve years ago) link

But he's really proud of wearing that blind armband

btw, pandemic, re. 'let's not be hasty' - i don't know if that was a direct response to me (no problem if it was), but i just wanna say that i didn't mean my comment to sound as if i was theorising about what may or may not have been the cause, if that's how it came across - i probably should have worded it better. just pointing out that i can completely understand how shit can happen despite everything appearing to be fine - if that makes sense. it's really not for me to say why it happened, and i hope i didn't come across as if i know it all. it's just incredibly sad isn't it.

Also Dalglish hasn't been feeding Lucas properly and hasn't cleaned out the newspaper in his hutch for weeks.

It's the complete absence of material to speculate on the cause that's the thing xps. You imagine you know a bit about people's lives because you watch them play or like their music or books or whatever, then something like this happens and you realise you don't know a thing.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 1 December 2011 17:45 (twelve years ago) link

sorry chris, my 'let's be hasty' was a glib response to your entirely sensible 'there's more to life than football' comment, born out of a couple of people pointing out to me just how much time i spend watching, reading, thinking about the game etc

pandemic, Thursday, 1 December 2011 18:02 (twelve years ago) link

I agree with both Chris and Deems about Lucas really, Dalglish shouldn't have played him but the fact he felt he had to play him so much is the result of some dodgy squad-building. Stand up Mr Comolli and yr blindspot in defensive midfield.

Matt DC, Thursday, 1 December 2011 18:16 (twelve years ago) link

matt has hit upon the solution. a move for zokora in january.

pandemic, Thursday, 1 December 2011 18:20 (twelve years ago) link

ah got it, no worries mate. (xposts)

Chris, Thursday, 1 December 2011 18:28 (twelve years ago) link

Comolli and Dalglish obviously felt at the start of the season that Spearing would be a suitable stand in (I assume that Spearing is our Lucas-in-waiting - there's no-on else it could possibly be). I don't see it myself, but there you go. Could of course play without a DM, but I'm guessing that would require the defence not to drop off and to squeeze the space left by where your covering midfielder would have been, which didn't happen against Norwich (see their goal).

Chris, Thursday, 1 December 2011 18:34 (twelve years ago) link

argh, someone change the subject

regarding Speed & depression in football, this article just popped up about an MLS/Bundesliga player & his battles with depression, it's a good read

M. White, Thursday, 1 December 2011 19:21 (twelve years ago) link

interesting article but the way it's written makes it seem that he was dealing with personal and professional problems rather than dealing with clinical depression.

mizzell, Thursday, 1 December 2011 19:34 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, your wife leaving you with your child does not make you depressed, it makes you sad.

considering or even committing suicide doesn't mean you are clinically depressed
