i'm going to try to look up other people who died via auto-erotic asphyxiation and see how their death was explained on The Free Encyclopedia

Frantisek Kotzwara, musician:

"He is perhaps more famous for the notorious nature of his death.[2]" the notorious masturbatory nature i think you mean

Stephen David Wyatt Milligan, British MP:

"He was found dead in his flat in Chiswick, London in February 1994, strangled by an electrical cord during an act of autoerotic asphyxiation.[1]" - well there we go, that's frank, bravo

Vaughn Bodē, artist:

"Bodē's death was due to autoerotic asphyxiation, or perhaps the use of asphyxia as a meditation aid: his last words (to his son) were, "Mark, I've seen God four times, and I'm going to see him again soon. That's No. 1 to me, and you're No. 2."" - uh ok, that's the end of researching this topic. i am fucked up for lyfe now

Z S, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 04:06 (twelve years ago) link

as much as i internally criticize my dad for being emotionally detached, uninformed conservative, at least he never told me auto-erotic asphyxiation was No. 1

let's see, i think my answers would probably be pretty boring, but hey:

til age 6 or so: ted e. bear - cleverly named teddy bear
6-10: illustrated children's bible - i used to be really religious and read the bible constantly, but the illustrated version was like my candy that i would afford myself on occasion
10-12 i was collecting a lot of baseball cards at this time. and reading all of the stats on the back, memorizing. i had them arranged by team, and whenever a player switched teams, i'd move them to their new team. shit got complicated really quick
13-16 i kind of blacked out on this period of my life. i'm pretty sure i was just playing videogames, not hitting puberty and not talking to my dad. objects...i was practicing percussion and drums constantly. like 2-4 hours per day. i didn't even think of them as my favorite things, it was something i had to do.
17-19: ernest the furnace. yeah, i named my pipe. this really was an awesome pipe, though, legendary in certain (really giggly) circles. after a particularly spirited evening i accidentally dropped it through the train tracks of a bridge about 100 feet above the ground, didn't bother chasing after it. rip ernest
20 - i had a bootleg german dvd of kraftwerk, can, neu, la dusseldorf and popul vuh performances/videos, and it fucking blew my mind. i watched it constantly and probably annoyed the hell out of everyone i knew
21 - ? let's face it, i drink a lot of alcohol

i can't avoid mentioning the NES game Marble Madness. this was a constant in my life up until a few years ago. i am the unofficial world record holder (beaten the world record, just haven't recorded it and submitted to Twin Galaxies). i have played it roughly 18 trillion times.

Z S, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 04:37 (twelve years ago) link

i bit my nails until i was 16 or 17 and then my grandma gave me a manicure kit and i replaced my nail biting obsession with a nail care obsession. which has waned a bit in the past decade at least. now i mostly don't bite my nails because ew germs.

i haven't been sleeping enough and was so grumpy this morning - and then the power went out 15 minutes after i woke up! it was out for blocks! but it did get me out of the house to have breakfast with a friend :)

also today i bought my new climbing harness and shoes and etc and am good to go! climbing on thurs night, doing push ups in preparation.

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 04:48 (twelve years ago) link

oh man, climbing! i started to get into it this past summer. i was living with a few roommates who went the the climbing gym (and occasionally out to boulder) really frequently, and i joined them several times. i had to move out (lol sadface breakup with gf) and haven't been back since. i should get back into it. i have negative 34 armstrength at this point, but i do have decent balance and instincts.

Z S, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 04:57 (twelve years ago) link

aw man

illustrated children's bible was pretty fucking sweet; still vaguely remember shit about jeraboam and jezebel and such (tree limbs! dogs!)

kinda curious about 13-16 but i'm guessing it was much like mine apart from god-fearing parents

21+ i hear you cluckin' big chicken (did the cards winning please you at all?)

i dunno man. you're *very* recently broken up and your parents are . . . apparently not helpful (do you have siblings?)

at the risk of being weird i kind of feel like you are a male abbott, i.e. potentially incredible.

jeez, i'm on philosophers 7-9 now, sigh

the attention afforded to revelations is always a little annoying - it's definitely the most violent and sci-fi/fantasy book of the bible so i can understand - but the images in the illustrated bible were mesmerizing. sinners clutching their heads in agony, multi-headed beasts descending near video rental stores. crazy and addictive.

i have a sister. she was definitely my best friend growing up, and we're still similar in many ways. but she never left missouri and is generally way more traditional than i am these days. i'll love her to pieces until i die but i can no longer share everything with her like i once could.

being compared to abbott is pretty much the nicest thing someone could say.

Z S, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 05:07 (twelve years ago) link

i was out earlier tonight, chatting with an old friend and whatnot, and she reminded me that in high school i was known for drinking too much, puking in my hand, and politely walking it over to the toilet without spilling a drop.

Music is the biggest thing I miss about having a car. My music consumption went way down when I got rid of my last car 2004). Headphones on the bus or train are no good bc I miss ambient noise, plus I'm not mentally I'll enough to enjoy singing along on public transit as I would in a car.

Sandbox Jesse, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 05:53 (twelve years ago) link

as much as i criticize cars (and am thinking about applying for an Undriver license), there are some really nice things about it. after I broke up recently, i flew back to St. Louis and rented a car to drive around to see people, and it wasn't until about 10 minutes into the rental car journey that i realized i could scream my head off, for the first time in years. i said many bad words. it was amazing. and then i listened to music at top volume. i still dislike cars, but i do miss that outlet.

Z S, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 06:00 (twelve years ago) link

Yeh. I understand the many many problems with cars, but I never feel more at home than when I'm driving. This makes me very popular as an Ikea chauffeur. Doing that this Saturday. Also love flying - specifically taking off and landing - and airports.

ZS, you should sort it out and record your Marble Madness score for Twin Galaxies. Holding a world record would be sooooooo sweet, even if it's not necessarily something you'd want to put on your CV or whatever. I keep meaning to send in a score for Civ II on the PS, but I'm scared by the whole "need to keep awake for 20 hours while I playthru" thing.

In a dirty bar there was a dirty man who gave me his dirty card that showed his home address. There, he said, the door was always unlocked, allowing access to his glory hole. I've seen this kind of thing on Manhunt. It seems next-level depraved and creepy. And pretty fascinating, tbh.

cutehound, Saturday, 31 December 2011 19:31 (twelve years ago) link

Because a year measures one cycle around the sun, you can arbitrarily pick any day in that cycle to mark the end/start of a solar year and it would make about as much sense as any other day. When this was first pointed out to me in high school, New Year's Day lost much of its lustre for me.

Aimless, Saturday, 31 December 2011 20:00 (twelve years ago) link

Wasn't it originally picked to be the winter solstice, so that the earth was being "reborn" as the new year began? Respect our pagan history, people!
