I had no idea Marisa Monte had two new albums out...

That said, I was really wondering why come I didn't know that given my currently pathetic "12-hrs in a studio then surf the web for 5 hrs on music sites for inspiration and because I don't know anyone else in the city" lifestyle. What blogs/sites/whatevs am I missing that cover non-indie music that's still not mainstream RS stuff? And yes, I know, another blog is the last thing I need.

Srsly tho, can't really help you on that account, since here in Portugal the new releases by Marisa/Caetano/Gilberto Gil/Chico are so high-profile that I really don't follow that sort of stuff on blogs.

I like "O Universo Ao Meu Redor" a lot, so light on its feet! And those Samba songs are great to get to know, almost a mini brazilian "Anthology Of Folk Music" (haha, how awesome would a *real* brazilian equivalent to that be, tho? Holy shit.) "Infinito Particular" is a bit too MOR for me tho.

11.15.06: I’m With The Band

"Saw Marisa Monte’s sold out show at the Beacon last night. (Full disclosure: I have a duet/collaboration with her on one of her new CDs.) She is a Brazilian artist, with one of the most beautiful voices in the world, who stages her shows as if they are art events. The sound was impeccable (the musicians and Marisa all were using in-ear monitors, which allowed the acoustic instruments: cavaquinho, bassoon (!), violin, cello, acoustic guitars, etc. to not bleed into one another via the usual stage monitor speakers.)

Marisa has released 2 CDs simultaneously recently — one a record of acoustic sambas — new and old — and the other more “electronic”, where keyboards and programming dominate. Emblematic of a generation that doesn’t want to lose its culture, its past, but is at the same time contemporary, Marisa’s 2 CDs make that schizophrenia concrete, in a good way. The samba CD just won a Latin Grammy.

Anyway, the show of hers that I saw a few years ago was staged in collaboration with artist Ernesto Neto, who has an exhibit in a gallery here now. He’s known for gauzy tent-like structures that feel like a white hazy version of the inside of some creature. I had to read about Marisa Monte's albums in Urb, which is a bit off-topic to me, kinda like reading about Schoenberg on Pitchfork. (Kidding!) Maybe I should read the LA Beat. Although I wasn't so keen on just reading about Brazilian, but more in general about these records that don't fall into indie, but aren't mainstream. Maybe my other examples are bad, but Aterciopelados (yes, I know, Colombian,) and Ron Sexsmith, whatevs! Where is stuff like that tracked? Roots rock magazines? YUCK!
