cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 20:14 (seventeen years ago) link

Stripes = Full Metal Jacket

School More Interesting Than Work?

sexyDancer (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 20:35 (seventeen years ago) link

Kontroll is next on my flix list!

Jon, you know the other night when you were telling me about Duel to the Death and how it's all magical and has crazy ninja scenes?? I was trying to remember Ashes of Time to compare it to but couldn't dredge up the title from memory!! I wanted to like it, I really did -- just couldn't tell what the fuck was going on.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 20:37 (seventeen years ago) link

inland empire:

if you love lynch you will love inland empire

if you do not love lynch, you will not love inland empire

polish gypsy magic, hollywood prostitutes, do the locomotion with me

this is cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 20:43 (seventeen years ago) link

I made the mistakes of smoking up while watching Ashes of Time. Like Stalker or Saragossa Manuscript, not the labyrinth to unravel under the influence.

sexyDancer (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 21:04 (seventeen years ago) link

duel to the death is so awesome

should i smoke before inland empire
my sources point to yes

v (sleep), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 21:38 (seventeen years ago) link

fell asleep during Seven Samurai. will try again later.

grbchv! (gbx), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 21:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Jenny warned you.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 21:48 (seventeen years ago) link

watched Art School Confidential last night. kinda meh, in a long line of kinda meh movies I've seen recently. I really hope Terry Zwigoff is going to make a great movie again one day.

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 21:58 (seventeen years ago) link

if you do not love lynch, you will not love inland empire

Patently untrue. I like 3 films of his a lot -- these last two and The Elephant Man -- and would burn many of the others.

should i smoke before inland empire

NO, bcs you cannot evaluate a film properly then (ie, my barman friend who though Burton's Planet of the Apes was 'great' stoned. or you'll be s1ockli.

Dr M (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 21:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Problem with smoking before three hour movies is the problem of coming down sometime soon after the previews. I don't think THC is really necessary with Lynch, as he's already "there."
Coffee, though

sexyDancer (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 22:02 (seventeen years ago) link

i smoked before inland, it was wonderful

this is cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 22:09 (seventeen years ago) link

these last two

to which last two are you referring

this is cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 22:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Carpenter's The Thing became a whole lot more effective on pot, though I admit I sort of got lost when I tried it on It's Alive.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 22:11 (seventeen years ago) link

i yam surrounded by teh stoners

cutty, Mulholland (the masterpiece) and Inland (its demented, perhaps traumatized cousin)

Dr M (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 22:18 (seventeen years ago) link

"cutty, Mulholland (the masterpiece)"

SILENCIO

David RER (Frank Fiore), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 22:20 (seventeen years ago) link

i like inland more--because i knew this time around it was a failed pilot turned film, it was a film from the ground up

all this talk about lynch making up everything as he went along is ridiculous, he obv knew what he was doing the whole time

this is cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 22:22 (seventeen years ago) link

wasn't a failed pilot turned film

this is cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 22:23 (seventeen years ago) link

The Thing is fucking fantastic, truly great film, etc. etc.

My favorite part is when they are getting ready to torch the camp and you realize that at some point these dudes were just like, "Yeah, we're going to die here."

Jessie the Monster (scarymonster), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 22:23 (seventeen years ago) link

the thing and repo man = #1 and #2 for '80s pics.

deep space nine (deep space nine), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 22:24 (seventeen years ago) link

when smoking, skip it's alive and go straight for cohen's god told me to (anyone on the noize board who hasn't seen it, I wish I could be there when they finally do, always up for watching that again)

tonight: re-watching alone in the dark. believe this review: http://www.geocities.com/pleasence/alone/alone.html

milton parker (milton parker), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 22:25 (seventeen years ago) link

TONIGHT IS THE NIGHT FOR RE-ANIMATORRRR.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonster), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 22:26 (seventeen years ago) link

omg 'alone in the dark' is awesome. martin landau, palance, pleasance! from the director of 'the hidden' and....well, nothing else i can think of.

deep space nine (deep space nine), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 22:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Mulholland really is a masterpiece of sorts, but it also reveals the limits of Lynchworld - there's just too much stuff in the way and too much reserve to really get across - so I might argue that the Straight Story, even if a small film, is better because of the Straight-jacketing.

nuneb (nuneb), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 22:32 (seventeen years ago) link

did not know it was the same director as 'the hidden'

it is just as awesome as 'the hidden'

milton parker (milton parker), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 22:32 (seventeen years ago) link

God Told Me To is fucking bananas, like if grant morrison wrote Law & Order episodes with a $2.50 budget.

sexyDancer (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 22:36 (seventeen years ago) link

the only thing the hidden has up on it is more car smashup action

deep space nine (deep space nine), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 22:37 (seventeen years ago) link

what about this:

http://imdb.com/title/tt0092632/

this is cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 22:47 (seventeen years ago) link

and i will always pair that with this:

Don't forget Seprent & The Rainbow.
(Late 80s B-flix come in 3s)

sexyDancer (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 22:50 (seventeen years ago) link

that's okay. it could be worse, it's helped by the actors.

i liked this one:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0297853/maindetails

deep space nine (deep space nine), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 22:50 (seventeen years ago) link

I'd already seen God Told Me To (which probably would've really screwed me up high).

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 22:53 (seventeen years ago) link

The Believers is great if you're a big fan of the "terrified, bug-eyed, superstitious, black man" stereotype.

sexyDancer (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 22:55 (seventeen years ago) link

it's kind of like 'mississippi burning'

deep space nine (deep space nine), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 22:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Do the Right Thing would kinda kick that shit to the curb for a bit a year later

sexyDancer (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 23:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Ashes of Time is like 100x less nonsensical than Duel to the Death

jw (ex machina), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 23:20 (seventeen years ago) link

do you still have that ninja movie?

latebloomer! (clonefeed), Thursday, 7 December 2006 00:05 (seventeen years ago) link

hank s1ockli (hanks1ockli), Thursday, 7 December 2006 02:07 (seventeen years ago) link

incidentally for those of you who are interested i interviewed manufactured landscapes director today she was really cool and smart and interesting. she also did a paul bowles doc once upon a time where she hung with him.

hank s1ockli (hanks1ockli), Thursday, 7 December 2006 02:08 (seventeen years ago) link

i checked his 'manufactured landscapes' book out of the library : D

deep space nine (deep space nine), Thursday, 7 December 2006 02:13 (seventeen years ago) link

nice!!!

you like?

hank s1ockli (hanks1ockli), Thursday, 7 December 2006 02:13 (seventeen years ago) link

it's great!

deep space nine (deep space nine), Thursday, 7 December 2006 02:20 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, best thing about Kontroll (broadcast here a few weeks ago) ws the disclaimer, and the producers were forced to put that in. Other than that, they make the most of the gothy-ness of the subway - looks good if you're watching it in the early hours.

Night Watch ws broadcast last week - saw 10 mins and that ws enough for me.

Other things

Cinema:

Requiem - German exorcist movie. This ws great!

DVD sale:

The trial of Joan of Arc (Bresson)
Nobody Knows
Cries and Whispers
Jubilee

DVDs (borrowed from library):
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind
Fantastic Four
King Kong (Naomi Watts/Jackson)
Dogville

TV:
School of Rock
Assault on Precint 13
Le Divorce - Merchant Ivory thingy w/Naomi Watts and an appearance from Stephen Fry. Naomi attempts suicide and 10 mins later its like nothing happened..

Screened The World which, despite some Linklater-esque anime sequences and minimal distribution late last year, is strong enough to probably go in my list of this shitty year's best.

Alfred Soto (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 7 December 2006 15:00 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, i found the animated bits annoying.

v (sleep), Thursday, 7 December 2006 15:08 (seventeen years ago) link

2004: "God, such a shitty year for film."
2005: "Oh, wait, my bad - THIS is a shitty year for film."
2006: "What was I thinking? This is without a doubt the shittiest shit film shit year for shit!"
