what if space is really, really boring

dayo, Tuesday, 29 November 2011 16:15 (twelve years ago) link

^hates life

gov. brownback blows a lot (henrietta lacks), Tuesday, 29 November 2011 16:18 (twelve years ago) link

Other way around, bub. Space is about getting out of this life, possibly out of bodies and humanity altogether. Dragons are about as vital as it gets.

Making like Melusine (Pyth), Tuesday, 29 November 2011 16:19 (twelve years ago) link

That's my theory for today, anyway.

Making like Melusine (Pyth), Tuesday, 29 November 2011 16:19 (twelve years ago) link

Space is infinite.
It is dark.
Space is neutral.
It is cold.

Stars occupy minute areas of space. They are clustered a few billion here. A few billion there. As if seeking consolation in numbers.
Space does not care.

Space does not threaten.
Space does not comfort.
It does not sleep; it does not wake; it does not dream; it does not hope; it does not fear; it does not love; it does not hate; it does not encourage any of these qualities.
Space cannot be measured. It cannot be angered, it cannot be placated. It cannot be summed up. Space is there.
Space is not large and it is not small. It does not live and it does not die. It does not offer truth and neither does it lie.
Space is a remorseless, senseless, impersonal fact.
Space is the absence of time and of matter

^^^^you can't say any of that shit about dragons

Fotherington Thomas, Tuesday, 29 November 2011 16:20 (twelve years ago) link

it's still pretty cool tho

ledge, Tuesday, 29 November 2011 16:28 (twelve years ago) link

mine was a vote for space, BTW

Fotherington Thomas, Tuesday, 29 November 2011 16:28 (twelve years ago) link

Space is infinite and therefore symbol for an infinite number of possibilities, it's the widest canvas possible to project the self.

Dragons on the other hand have always been convenient shorthand for fears of the unknown, fears of the Other: remember the old maps that imagine a flat world where you could just sail and sail until you fell of the edge? And what awaited you there? "HERE BE DRAGONS"

(might be a reason to prefer dragons, actually)

gov. brownback blows a lot (henrietta lacks), Tuesday, 29 November 2011 16:29 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, man, I'll take human life right here! All that stuff you just said about space repels me like fucken' magnets.

Making like Melusine (Pyth), Tuesday, 29 November 2011 16:32 (twelve years ago) link

I prefer space because living in fear is a waste of time.

Important evidence for your consideration:

if it were space v dinosaurs tho, well, that's another story

dayo, Tuesday, 29 November 2011 16:44 (twelve years ago) link

You can't dance with dragons, but you can dance as freely as you want when you are in space. You're not bound by stupid old gravity.

Where does the bottom of the ocean fit into this equation?

La Lechera, former application inspector for the (league of women voters), Tuesday, 29 November 2011 16:44 (twelve years ago) link

Dragons are "monsters" and stand in for the unknown and un-conquered of all kinds. In particular, reptilian figures are often linked to that which is unknown about the earth/nature. I'm a big fan of that.

Making like Melusine (Pyth), Tuesday, 29 November 2011 16:46 (twelve years ago) link

That is a compelling idea, and I love nature and its unknownness, but it's such an earth-limited view.

La Lechera, former application inspector for the (league of women voters), Tuesday, 29 November 2011 16:48 (twelve years ago) link

I vote dragons because reptiles in myth get a bad rap and I think they're way more important than the sagas/Grimm Bros let on.

Since most dragons appear to have six limbs, I don't think they are reptiles. I guess they are some kind of giant insects or crustaceans?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 29 November 2011 16:50 (twelve years ago) link

snakes have no limbs, are they not reptiles either?

OH NOES, Tuesday, 29 November 2011 16:55 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, but the maximum number of limbs a reptile can have is four. Even snakes are descended from tetrapods.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 29 November 2011 16:58 (twelve years ago) link

Can't really imagine a kids' movie about training your space

M. White, Tuesday, 29 November 2011 16:58 (twelve years ago) link

What the hell do you mean, "most" dragons??

Making like Melusine (Pyth), Tuesday, 29 November 2011 17:01 (twelve years ago) link

snakes are just giant limbs

smh, Tuesday, 29 November 2011 17:01 (twelve years ago) link

Anyway, I think this piece of evidence should win the argument:

Tuomas, Tuesday, 29 November 2011 17:03 (twelve years ago) link

dragons w/ jetpacks?

well played.

gov. brownback blows a lot (henrietta lacks), Tuesday, 29 November 2011 17:04 (twelve years ago) link

i'd rather shoot around space as myself than as a big old dragon

dayo, Tuesday, 29 November 2011 17:06 (twelve years ago) link

This had hitherto been a contest between the sci-fi future and the fantasy past

M. White, Tuesday, 29 November 2011 17:07 (twelve years ago) link

I also think of it as interior space/dragon and exterior space/space, though? Like space is gonna make us as we know "us" obsolete, or so different that we won't know where we came from. (I was thinking the other night while wringing out laundry about what a world without gravity or with very weak gravity would be like, and realized the differences in how we would live were eclipsed by the greater differences in what would have evolved as "human" in the first place.)

Whereas dragons are gonna show you what was already in you that you didn't even know about; primal, secret things.

Making like Melusine (Pyth), Tuesday, 29 November 2011 17:15 (twelve years ago) link

Aw see I already know those things and I am ready to float in space, thank u

La Lechera, former application inspector for the (league of women voters), Tuesday, 29 November 2011 17:17 (twelve years ago) link

guys

imagine a dragon made out of stars

"Some legends even speak of the dragons being a comet from space and this is definitely another additive to this scenario due to the fact that comets usually accompany fire."

predator vs dragon

daramaracas.jpg (p much resigned to deems), Tuesday, 29 November 2011 17:21 (twelve years ago) link

I feel like space would only be palatable if FTL travel was provided. otherwise it'd be a BIG BORE.

dayo, Tuesday, 29 November 2011 17:33 (twelve years ago) link

"Are we there yet?"

M. White, Tuesday, 29 November 2011 17:37 (twelve years ago) link

FTL is a vague term with vague outcomes, stasis probaly the way fwd imo

daramaracas.jpg (p much resigned to deems), Tuesday, 29 November 2011 17:41 (twelve years ago) link

xp - And then what, a dragon? Everything is a journey, you will never get there.

La Lechera, former application inspector for the (league of women voters), Tuesday, 29 November 2011 17:42 (twelve years ago) link

think about all the space pollution space travel would bring - what if we changed the universe from a red shift universe to a blue shift universe because people were choosing mass produced spaceliners from betelguese V instead of artisanal, locally sourced cruiseships from alpha centauri?

dayo, Tuesday, 29 November 2011 17:44 (twelve years ago) link

in dragons, no one can hear u scream

mookieproof, Tuesday, 29 November 2011 17:45 (twelve years ago) link

Outside of a dragon, space is a man's best friend; inside of a dragon, no one can hear u scream.

Making like Melusine (Pyth), Tuesday, 29 November 2011 17:47 (twelve years ago) link

also we are already experiencing space, every day! do you know how much space there is between an atom's nucleus and its electrons?????? think of all the atoms in your body!!!!!
