Wouldn't Desmond actor have said "Eerr... we wouldn't have posters like that and we certainly wouldn't spell 'Honour' that way" to the props people??

Nobody ever listens to me. Sigh.

I agree though, that the not-quite-rightness of the London scenes made for a lovely kind of fever dream. Poor Desmond. I really like him, and he is an excellent foil for Charlie, really.

this ep really wasn't that revealing!

they made a lot of the ring going in the river. maybe hobbit boy will go after it/it'll turn up on the beach. also the jom robinson/deezy thing is a bit too much like the jin/sun thing, no?

Well I guess they were running out of new ways to portray fathers in a bad light.

I started watching Heroes, and that seems to be full of bad or absent dads too. And then there's the new series of 24 ...

I thought the scenes in the pub were some of the strangest. 16floz glasses, napkins instead of beermats, being given a napkin by the barman as he poured your drink, not paying until you're leaving - THIS IS NOT A BRITISH PUB.

I'm surprised that this hasn't come up. From the "brainwashing" scene from 2 weeks ago. Played backward , this scene has a voice clearly saying "Only fools are enslaved by time and space."

OMG POLAR BEAR PAINTINGS IN JIM ROBINSON's OFFICE!!1!!!!

watch that scene again. as soon as Des looks away from the painting, it is GONE. unsure whether this intentional or just a horizontal flip of the film for some reason, but it disappears as soon as it cuts to the next shot.

napkins instead of beermats

what is a beermat?

Okay, a coaster. I wikied it.

Some beermats are collectible items. Tegestology is a latin term defined as the practice of collecting beermats or coasters, with practitioners known as tegestologists Collecting beermats is an especially popular hobby in Germany. There is an international collector's association called IBV in Germany since 1958. The British Beermat Collectors Society was founded shortly afterwards in 1960 and currently has around 300 members spread around the world. Like the IBV, it organizes regular meetings for collectors and also publishes a monthly newsletter. Other notable clubs associated with tegestology include the South Australian Coaster Collectors Club and New South Wales Coaster Collectors Club. There are many subcategories of tegestologists, including those who are solely interested in porcelain or other specific kinds of beermats.

The London bits were much more convincing than the portrayal of Brixton in one of Charlie's flashbacks, which was hilariously bad.

I think Charlie is going to die, but we'll spend the whole season waiting for it to happen.

Also, am I the only one who finds Claire's story really interesting? There's still that whole thing about the baby being special - and I'm assuming the psychic dude in the first series was experiencing the same phenomenon as Desmond?

Hurley appears to have got over his girlfriend dying like way quickly. Isn't it about three or four days?

Anyone else find the whole "Mr. Eko is dead, the island killed him" really unsatisfying and annoying since it was never alluded to again in this episode?

surely just equally bad.

perhaps Charlie will accept his fate and go on a kamikaze mission to rescue Jack/some other herculean task to benefit everyone else.

claire's *story* is really interesting but i don't think it's come up since the first series!

That would be pretty great. Though I suppose it would take some more convincin by way of near-misses that Desmond saves him from. And then maybe the mission would serve a redemptive function and he would survive. Though he already very flagrantly cheated death one time (the hanging episode).

Metrosexual Healing (crunkleJ), Monday, 19 February 2007 05:55 (seventeen years ago) link

good point, he's already been dead (they never touched on whether he had any kind of NDE) once.

things that have not yet been mentioned/people who have not yet appeared this season:
- the two kids (and why they were out in the jungle with 'Others' bare-feet)
- rose and bernard
- rousseau
- michael and walt

oh now i remember what i was going to say last week: rousseau *captured* ben. so either: no they've never met or: he raised alex 'as a father or: it was an inside job, rousseau helped benry get inside the losties' camp.

i need to watch the episode where the phoney psychic comes clean again.

Anyone else find the whole "Mr. Eko is dead, the island killed him" really unsatisfying and annoying since it was never alluded to again in this episode?

Yeah I was thinking about that too. I think focusing heavily on the flashback/dream/whatever took away a lot from what's going on on the Island at that moment. I mean, we really need to know what happens with Locke and looking north and I suspect by the time THAT episode rolls around, we've already forgotten why we should care.

I was just reading someone's complaint that at least part of why LOST is losing steam now is because there's too many personal subplots, whereas in the first season, everything that happened on the Island almost always involved the entire ensemble cast. It's really hard to follow what's going on with one group (Losties) when there's something else happening with another group (Kate/Sawyer) and yet another happening at the same time (Jack).

Stuck in ILX Limbo (Roz), Monday, 19 February 2007 10:49 (seventeen years ago) link

i think the rigidity of the format (ie the one character, one flashback) thing makes it really difficult for them to handle simultaneous action, which is kind of annoying. i suppose the last episode only sovered a few hours of island time, but those hours were probably covered on the prison island in episode six. i think they either need to kill a bunch of people or figure out how not to ignore them so much of the time.

temporary enrique (temporary enrique), Monday, 19 February 2007 10:52 (seventeen years ago) link

sounds like the ratings are slumping enough for them to probably try and wrap it up either this series or next woot

resumo impetus (blueski), Monday, 19 February 2007 11:00 (seventeen years ago) link

perhaps Charlie is 'next' because as with Ana-Lucia and Eko he has killed an Other (as have Sun, Sawyer and now Juliet - possible clues as to who will cop it further on in the series)

resumo impetus (blueski), Monday, 19 February 2007 11:05 (seventeen years ago) link

i doubt charlie will die really. it would be a bit straightforward.

temporary enrique (temporary enrique), Monday, 19 February 2007 11:07 (seventeen years ago) link

perhaps the spirit of rock n' roll will perish within him.

resumo impetus (blueski), Monday, 19 February 2007 11:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah I sort of wish they'd mix up the Others Island stuff with the beach/ensemble scenes in each episode a bit more. Either that or have Locke, Sayid and Jin go in there and kick arse and get Jack back asap.

but my frustration with the show was largely because i knew there'd be a big gap after the first 6. now it promises to be every week until the end i'm pretty happy with things.

resumo impetus (blueski), Monday, 19 February 2007 12:55 (seventeen years ago) link

hmm. i was off my medication.

temporary enrique (temporary enrique), Monday, 19 February 2007 12:57 (seventeen years ago) link

that or: i kind of knew the six wouldn't work, even though there were some great bits, but these last two haven't done it for me either. maybe they should have made the six *entirely* about jack kate and sawyer on the other island and not bodged the other stuff. thus ep 7 could have started with more of a bang. getting them *off* the island is/was a big chore.

temporary enrique (temporary enrique), Monday, 19 February 2007 13:00 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah like what they did with the tailies. but that would have risked alienating the section of the fanbase who aren't Jack/Kate/Sawyer fans.

Stuck in ILX Limbo (Roz), Monday, 19 February 2007 13:30 (seventeen years ago) link

Ben can't be Rousseau's husband, because he has been on the island his whole life, whereas Rousseau & fam & crew crashed there 16 years ago (I feel like I should specify "16 island years".

why lost is lost:

How to Fix It

For characters: Kill Jack. Kill Kate. Kill Nicki and Paolo (or whatever) and never, ever, ever make such a grade school attempt to introduce new characters again. Make Charlie interesting again instead of the whiny, jealous infant he became. Don't screw up Desmond. Cripple Locke and bring back his mystic bent. Let Sayid loose. More Sun & Jin. Make Sawyer say something besides "offensive attention-getter, unimaginative nickname. Sarcastic comment and/or question." Oh, and maybe explain where Danielle is after all this time.

GAWD PVNCH (yournullfame), Monday, 19 February 2007 15:15 (seventeen years ago) link
