Maybe this should go in the dumbass thread though it's more depressing than dumbassed and tangentially related to this year's cash-flinging offseason: Strib's Patrick Reusse sez no way in Hell Santana's a Twin past '08.

f. scott baio (natepatrin), Saturday, 30 December 2006 20:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Patrick Reusse is an idiot.

NEWS ALERT! SMALL MARKET TEAMS OFTEN CANNOT AFFORD HIGH PRICED FREE AGENT STARS! STAR TRIBUNE WRITER SHOCKED!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 30 December 2006 22:52 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't see why you should be depressed, Nate. It sounds like the Twins (as usual) have cornered a ridiculous amount of solid young arms.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 30 December 2006 22:56 (seventeen years ago) link

OK, we could lose the best pitcher the franchise has had since Walter Johnson, but on the other hand, there's a dude from the same country with a similar name who's 6'3" 158 pounds and did OK in Single A! Celebrate good times come on!

f. scott baio (natepatrin), Saturday, 30 December 2006 23:05 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah that's not so hot. And no Liriano maybe not even in 2008, I heard.

Michael (Oakland Mike), Saturday, 30 December 2006 23:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Nate, you SHOULD be thanking your lucky stars you guys managed to have Santana for the last six (and probably best) years (and will have him for the NEXT two most likely) as opposed to bitching about not being able to lock him up for the next ten or whatever years (which you should never reasonably expected to do anyway--it was totally weird that Santana signed that three year deal last offseason for far below his market value--and which a team shouldn't WANT to do because Johan probably won't still be Johan in 2013-16.) And you should also be grateful that unlike most small market baseball teams your organization is pretty well run (probably the best run team in baseball along with the A's) and will manage to outscout or outthink most of the rest of teams out there.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 30 December 2006 23:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Being bummed about Liriano is totally fair though. That sucks. But knowing your team won't be able to overpay for a bunch of soon-to-be free agents that you shouldn't sign for that amount of money for that length of time anyway isn't something that you should really be surprised or depressed about as far as I am concerned.

He seems more like 2007's Vinny Castilla.

Vinny Castilla = NOT FUNNY (& not a guy I'd want to eat tacos with).

David RER (Frank Fiore), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 20:25 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm actually shocked that there are A's fans who think trading Blanton for Milledge is a bad deal for the A's!

Why was Ronnie Belliard only worth a minor league contract? That seems bizarre to me. The dude is a good player.

Michael (Oakland Mike), Sunday, 18 February 2007 17:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Because he's related to Rafael Belliard, & teams are afraid he'll start playing like his cuz? Honestly, unless he's banged up, I'm not sure - surprised a team like the Mets, for instance, didn't take a flyer on him.

BTW, I found an article on CBS.com about the RB signing that had this little roffle in the last paragraph:

"The Nationals also announced that director of player development Andy Dunn resigned. Assistant general manager Bob Boone and other members of the baseball operations staff will take over Dunn's duties for the time being."

David RER (Frank Fiore), Monday, 19 February 2007 00:33 (seventeen years ago) link

I was just watching a clip of Steve Phillips on Cold Pizza. He was asked how he would fix the team. So here's what he recommended (rofl):

1. Trade Rocco Baldelli and Tim Corcoran to the Marlins for Dontrelle Willis
2. Trade Jorge Cantu for Chuck James
3. Trade BJ Upton for Derrick Turnbow
4. Sign Ron Belliard
5. Move the team to San Antonio and name them the San Antonio Saints.

You mean like the entire heart of the Cardinals line-up during the 2004 World Series OH SNAP!

To be fair, he was hitting the snot out of the ball in the AL prior to the trade. Guess the switch to the NL effed up his mojo.

When I briefly wrote for a Toronto baseball publication called *Innings* in the mid-'80s, Bobby Valentine was the only manager (or player) I ever interviewed. Got about three minutes with him on the field at old Exhibition Stadium. I don't remember the wording, but one question went something like this: "Seeing as you were someone who spent a lot of your playing career never quite breaking into the everyday lineup, do you think you have special empathy as a manager for those kinds of players?" (I don't remember the relevance...Texas may have had a few journeymen at the time.) It's pretty funny to think about it now--I think I actually thought he'd respond well to such a question. ("That's a really good point...") What I got was a hateful glare and about a three-word answer.

He did get 400+ PAs twice, both before and after the gruesome leg injury.

I do think that the 2000 Mets using 10 different leadoff hitters is a nifty factoid.

My current guess for Bobby V's return to ESPN: June 2013.

I'll try to dig it up tonight--I think it was a very terse "No, not true," or something like that.
