hi everyone. i am trying to take some time off from the internet and do more reading and exercise and cleaning my house. it's not working great but at least i'm trying. like sometimes i get distracted and read max's posts on gawker! i have a procrastination problem. just saying hi! i guess i can check in on the sandbox more often and it wouldn't hurt. i miss all of u.

i am supposed to ahve my 1st jury trial tomorrow and i am not sure how to do it

i was wrong, the client was v lucky and got a judge who is a stickler for starting at a certain time and the state put its witness on call and she was late so they made us an offer we couldn't refuse and there was no trial

haha not personally. it is seriously the shittiest worst most suburban dull ugly boring county. except a bunch of other counties in maryland.

like i was surprised by it but it helped make sense of other things that go on there

harbl do you find the usa/md system of government/justice more or less depressing than you used to?

ie tell me everything's okay?

hard to remember how i used to feel about it but it comes and goes in waves. sometimes i'm like what the fuuuuuuuck this is bullshit and other days i'm like ok. mostly i am just mad at it and the people who believe in it. there is a lot of false helping. people who believe that what they're doing is helping someone. for example probation with mandatory drug treatment or anger management (and if you fail probation getting more jail time than you would if probation didn't exist, so you get punished additionally rather than for the original offense) or the crap prosecutors put domestic violence victims through. also SO many people who think making drugs a crime is doing anything for anyone. i could go on!

i have a motions hearing tomorrow and i know i'm going to lose it (boss said he cannot remember ever winning a single one of this type of motion and he is 50 but the point is not to win it anyway) but i have no idea how it is even done so i am just guessing! i am stressing myself out. i am tired of doing misdemeanors and i want to be able to move up when the opportunity arises so i am putting extra pressure on myself to do a good job. people know that i am smart and i care, i think, but i am not technically skillful.

harbl do you have to pick jurors? and is there a white noise machine to hide what ppl say?

my only jury experience was in dc, which tends to adopt the worst legal practices from the 50 states, tho

yeah it's more like they are lined up in order and we strike until we run out of strikes. the judge asks the questions, which we suggest. i think in most states the lawyers get to question the jurors. there is a white noise machine, i hate that.

i got a summons! but i don't know if i have to appear until the night before!

what's this white noise business about? i've been called for jury duty a ton of times but i've never been empaneled. which is fine by me because i'd hate it. one time i got all the way to the part about sitting in the jury place, but then one of the lawyers nixed me for an unspoken reason. never noticed any white noise.

pan africa -- food was good, service was whatevs?

in dc, ppl got called up to 'approach the bench' and were briefly questioned with judge, prosecutor and defense attorney right there. but no one else in the (large) room could hear because of the white noise machine WHICH WAS REALLY FUCKING ANNOYING.

thank u all but i guess i lied again. we did too good of a job and made it poof go away. it was gonna be kind of cool because this guy who is married had at least 3 other girls that all knew about each other and had each other's phone numbers/facebook/etc. so there was a lot of cross-harassment and this lady got pissed one day after he didn't answer any of her 50 phone calls, lured him to a gas station (she was gonna get him to go to her house but he said he had no gas so she came to "help"), falsely claimed he robbed her and made 4 different reports about it to various things like 911, statement of charges, 2 different stories at the hospital. oh well! she even helpfully gave the state a printout of a facebook wall conversation she had with one of the other girls that was like "hes mine tonight imma be movin on top of him go play wit ur grandkids" lol.
