Ortiz and Ramírez combined to reach base in all 10 of their plate appearances and went 4 for 4 with five walks and four runs. Ramirez had three runs batted in.

Since the playoffs began, Boston’s devastating third and fourth hitters have been on base in 29 of 36 plate appearances, a shocking statistic.

Mariners broadcaster Dave Niehaus just got named winner of the Ford C. Frick Award, on the same day he is celebrating his 73rd birthday. This is quite an honor, since it means he's being inducted into the broadcasting wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. A deserving guy. Ceremony takes place July 25-28.

ronaloldo

Ronaldo, Andreia, Andre and the 30,000 dollar bribe

Ronaldo had the shock of his life on Monday night when he discovered three prostitutes he'd picked up were in fact transvestites with one allegedly trying to bribe him out of 30,000 dollars for keeping mum about the incident.

The three time world Footballer of the Year, recovering in Brazil after knee surgery in February, was out and about in Rio to watch his beloved club Flamengo at the city's Maracana stadium.

At dawn, after dropping his girlfriend off at her house, the 31-year-old AC Milan striker picked up a prostitute who suggested bringing along two colleagues charging 300 dollars each, and booked into a nearby motel.

But it then became clear to Ronaldo that the prostitute, Andreia Albertine, was in fact Andre Luiz Ribeiro Albertino, a 21-year-old transvestite.

The other two prostitutes were also transvestites.

When the 2002 World Cup winner realised his mistake he reportedly threatened to hit Andreia who accused him of asking her to buy him drugs, according to local press reports quoting the prostitute.

Andreia videoed the footballer emerging from the motel on her mobile phone's camera.

The video, which appeared later on the internet site YouTube, shows Ronaldo wearing a Flamengo shirt. In the background a non-identified voice can be heard saying: "This is to prove that it's really you".

Qwest to see Brazil's best
Tickets for May 31 friendly vs. Canada go on sale Monday
By MATTHEW GASCHK
SPECIAL TO THE P-I

The advertising campaign for Seattle's new MLS franchise proclaims, "The World's Game is Coming to Seattle."

Turns out, it's coming sooner than expected.

Soccer United Marketing announced Monday that the No. 2 team in the world, Brazil, will bring its famous yellow jerseys with green trim to Qwest Field on May 31 to face Canada in an international friendly.

Tickets ($35 to $125) go on sale Monday at Ticketmaster and the Sounders FC ticket office.

Brazil will be preparing for a World Cup qualifying match against Paraguay on June 14, so it likely will carry some of its top players. Its roster could feature such international luminaries as Kaka, Ronaldinho, Robinho and Alexandre Pato.

omg i'm just gonna love lou piniella now and forever

A question focusing on whether Piniella thought about shifting slick-fielding center fielder Reed Johnson to left -- in place of fresh-off-the-disabled-list Alfonso Soriano -- when he inserted defensive sub Felix Pie in center during the eighth inning lit Piniella's short fuse.

''You're damn right I thought about it,'' Piniella said, his voice rising. ''You think I'm stupid or something? God ... darn it. Thought. All right. Thanks.''

jergins, Friday, 2 May 2008 22:02 (fifteen years ago) link

got it

St. Petersburg, Fla. — Lou Piniella wasn't around to see his team lose in extra innings.

Ruben Gotay hit an RBI grounder in the 10th inning and the Kansas City Royals beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, 7-6, Wednesday.

Piniella was ejected in the second by plate umpire Mike Winters for arguing balls and strikes. After being tossed, the Tampa Bay manager came out of the dugout, argued briefly with Winters, then proceeded to kick dirt three times onto the plate.

"Today's game, I sat right back here (in his office) and watched it on TV from the second inning on," Piniella said. "Had an egg roll and a cold beer, and I watched the ballgame."

lol manny:

Manny Ramírez, meanwhile, spent a couple of minutes in the clubhouse trying to convince reporters the Sox should trade Tavarez for one of Milwaukee's sausages, the stars of the race that occurs prior to every seventh inning in Miller Park. That was after he announced that Tavarez should be traded to Tampa Bay.

uss mariner sons washburn

Washburn’s done this before, insinuating to the media that Johjima’s responsible for his poor performances. I have a news flash for you, Mr. Washburn - you aren’t pitching well because you suck. You throw a meaty fastball over the plate and your breaking pitches are something an 8th grader would be embarrassed of. Johjima can’t flash a few hand signs and tell you to throw a good pitch, because you’re not capable of it. His options are Suck Pitch #1 and Suck Pitch #2, with a side of Suck Pitch #3 worked in for good measure.

You’re lousy because you lack talent, not because your catcher is Japanese. Own up, be a man, take your ridiculous contract and shut the hell up. Thank you.

No. 1 Justine Henin retires from tennis immediately

Henin, though, won’t have any sort of farewell tour. She is quitting immediately.

“It is a new beginning for me. I feel like I already lived three lives. I gave the sport all I could and took everything it could give me,” she said. “I take this decision without the least bit of regrets. It is my life as a woman that starts now.”

haha http://seattle.metblogs.com/
The Mariners failure this year is so epic that it transcends sports. This is a study in human misery and abject failure brought on by the arrogant presumptions of a management team unwilling (or unable) to evaluate or adjust to the situation on the ground (as it were). This is a failure so spectacular that even non-sports fans can appreciate it; a failure so magnificent it’s actually made the highly organized, stay-on-message corporation known mostly for their baseball product, interesting. This isn’t mere schadenfreude, either. This is a 6 month long Shakespearian tragedy occurring 6 times a week on TV, radio, and at a ballpark near you.
