Did we ever work out what was likely to be the best 7th-gen console?

we just dont have the livingroom space for pretending at golf/bowling/being Link.

As I understand it most (all?) games can be played by sitting on your arse and using flicks of the wrist.

Yeah, that Wii remote is something else. What will Nintendo think of next? Maybe some sort of gun with which you could shoot at ducks inside the television?

PPlains (PPlains), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 23:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Front if you want, but you know it'll be fun.
I just got commitment from the girl to buy core system when I find it, leaving me to cover the remaining 150 for zelda, xtra wiimote w/chuk, 2000 wii points and tax.
I just gotta beat FFXII first.

yeah JW has a habit of repeating things he learns the week or so prior, regardless of context. I like that about him though, reminds me of me.

Anyway:
What will Nintendo think of next?

They might think of another scheme wherein developers are given the chance to finally stretch their talent at minimal upfront $$$ while offering the highest revenue potential for any platform per unit sold, on a console which they themselves make a profit on from launch day forward, yada yada fucking yada.

Anyway if anybody else has $500-700 to throw away for the chance to play such classics as FPS: Apocalypse In The Future, FPS: Apocalypse In The Future, or FPS: Apocalypse In The Future, let me know how fun that shit is, maybe I'll eat ramen for a month and join you.

Isn't the problem with the Ninetendo consoles that they just seem so... kiddie compared with the Playstations?

If I were to buy any of these (which I'm not) I'd go for the one that is likely to get the best range, the biggest games and the most staying power and I bet that'll be the PS3.

Checked out the Wii at a local EB games when I stopped by the local zombie mall to get measured for a coat. Excite Truck seems like a fun drunk party thing, assuming you can race two cars at once.

kingfish in absentia (kingfish), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:34 (seventeen years ago) link

ExciteTruck has a split-screen 2-player.

Played Wii last night, am in LOVE. The Zelda sword-swings aren't anything more than a wiggle of the remote, but that is still way more satisfying/hilarious than button-mash + button-mash. Also, when they come out with a Wii Fly Fishing game, I will be the first in line to buy.

drunk Friendster massage (nklshs), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Also I don't think I'm alone in assuming FPS: Apocalypse In The Future is going to be way more fun on Wii, for 1/2 - 1/3 the price.

drunk Friendster massage (nklshs), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:43 (seventeen years ago) link

i might buy a XBOX 360 JUST so i can play retro Sensible Soccer online as the good gamelord intended. altho this may not be necessary if the SS.de forum comes back up.

http://ichart.finance.yahoo.com/z?s=SNE&t=6m&q=l&l=on&z=m&c=NTDOY.PK&a=v&p=s

not at $700 a pop, and the company still losing money at that price, and developers shying away. a year or two from now somebody will write an article and the title will be "blu-ray killed the playstation star." And I'll get that fucking song stuck in my head, just like I did to myself just now.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:54 (seventeen years ago) link

My main problem with the Wii is that most of the games look like gimmicky rubbish, and in the areas where it was supposed to excel (ie FPS) the limits of the controller are already becoming apparent. The only thing its got going for it is a Game Cube game. Whoop dee doo.

Nintendo: why didn't you bring out a proper console? Why have you gone down the Russell T. Davies route of destroying something good by remaking it for women and gays?

Andronicus (The One and Only Andronicus Co), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 17:16 (seventeen years ago) link

"you dudez can just play xbox is the idea right?"

So the people who actually play games buy an Xbox and spend several hundred pounds on games and accessories. The Women and Gays who don't play games buy the Wii, play Wii sports for 5 minutes, then go off and talk about shoes or something.

Excellent plan.

kingfish in absentia (kingfish), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 17:52 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't know...you'd need a hell of a lot cognative balance to think the Wii was a good idea after your remote had gone through the tele, the autoupdate had bricked your system and you'd realised that all you had to play were shit minigames or crippled versions of 360/PS3 games that would probably work better with a decent controller.

What kind of retard pays $700 on a fricking game console? There's like no argument here; unless the PS3 forms Voltron and then cleans your house and I haven't been told about it, wtf are you doing. It really doesn't have any greater game reach than the X-Box seems to and it's nearly 2x the price.

I'm looking vaguely forward to "breaking my tv" playing MIME MADDEN, btw. But that is because I am both a Women and a Gay.

No love for SNES controller, -10 points.

Oh dear.

Sir Gregory of St.Kitts (g-kit), Thursday, 30 November 2006 12:50 (seventeen years ago) link

The Snes controller was alright in a time before games companies had discovered ergonomics (certainly better than Sega's Saturn/DC strategy of adding buttons to something resembling a dinner plate) - but to release something like it in the present day is just silly. Especially if you're going to copy Sony's uncomfortable and practically unusable analog stick placement.

Predictable reference to Spastics? It's not my fault that Nintendo and chums feel compelled to include them in most of the promotional material:

WILMINGTON, N.C. - A young man accused of robbing a fellow college student of two new PlayStation 3 video game consoles was shot and killed - possibly while holding a game controller - by officers sent to arrest him.

Peyton Strickland, 18, was killed Friday at a house he shared with three roommates, Sheriff Sid Causey said.

Roommate Mike Rhoton said Strickland was unarmed when he got up from playing a Tiger Woods golf game but may have been holding a controller when he went to the door as officers bashed it in. Strickland's dog also was shot to death.

The sheriff said Strickland was shot by members of a specially trained team who went to help university officers serve arrest warrants. Causey said officers considered the arrest a high-risk situation.

"Anytime that someone beats a person severely and commits an armed robbery, I certainly would consider him a risk and a danger," Causey said.

The sheriff said the robbery victim waited in line for three days to buy the units for $641 each at a Wal-Mart. He was unloading them at his campus apartment when one man beat him to the ground while another took the consoles, Causey said.
