good list! there were a lot of big rap singles this year that I just hated, though (Hustlin', Touch It, We Fly High, Hustlin', etc). here's the hip hop parts of my top 100 singles (which was way lighter on rap than it's been most other years), although if I was setting out to make a best hip hop singles list it'd probably look a little different and I'd remove some of the more R&Bish stuff:

1. T.I. - "What You Know"
2. DJ Khaled f/ Paul Wall, Lil Wayne, Fat Joe, Rick Ross and Pitbull - "Holla At Me Baby"
3. Ray Cash f/ Scarface - "Bumpin' My Music"
9. Chamillionaire f/ Krayzie Bone - "Ridin'"
16. E-40 f/ Keak Da Sneak - "Tell Me When To Go"
21. Rich Boy f/ Polow Da Don - "Throw Some D's"
23. Birdman and Lil Wayne - "Stuntin' Like My Daddy"
27. B.G. f/ Mannie Fresh - "Move Around"
29. Young Dro - "Rubberband Banks"
33. Twista f/ Pitbull - "Hit The Floor"
37. Remy Ma - "Conceited"
43. Lil Wayne - "Hustler Musik"
45. Diddy f/ Nicole Scherzinger - "Come To Me"
49. DJ Khaled f/ Kanye West, Consequence and John Legend - "Grammy Family"
50. Ghostface f/ Ne-Yo - "Back Like That"
52. Pitbull - "Ay Chico (Lengua Afuera)"
60. Young Dro f/ T.I. - "Shoulder Lean"
64. Jay-Z - "Show Me What You Got"
65. Rick Ross - "Blow"
67. Kanye West - "Touch The Sky"
74. Three 6 Mafia - "Poppin' My Collar"
78. Dre f/ Keyshia Cole - "Be Somebody"
79. 50 Cent f/ Olivia - "Best Friend"

85. Daz f/ Rick Ross - "On Some Real Shit"
87. Young Buck - "I Know You Want Me"
90. Yung Joc f/ Nitti - "It's Goin' Down"

I tried to do some long list but got bored, so if I had to pick 10 it'd probably be something like:

T.I. - "What You Know"
Lupe Fiasco - "Kick Push"
Ghostface - "Be Easy"
Killa Kamillionz - "Memoriez"
Rich Boy - "Throw Some D's"
Federation - "18 Dummy"
E-40 feat. Keak Da Sneak - "Tell Me When To Go (Superhyphy Remix)"
The Pack feat. Too $hort - "Vans (Remix)"
Ray Cash feat. Scarface - "Bumpin My Music"
Trae feat. Hawk and Pimp C - "Swang (Remix)"

if "talkin to you" was an actual single, it'd be at the top

violent j (sandboxhulkington), Saturday, 30 December 2006 03:03 (seventeen years ago) link

i'm diggin both the young dro and birdman/wayne. not too into the field mob, they're a little too ludacrissed-out ("i hate you" is kinda roffley with that nu-metal screaming on the chorus)

amon (amon), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 04:01 (seventeen years ago) link

also i can't take a whole album of lil boosie

amon (amon), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 04:22 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah "I Hate You" is one of the most hilariously bad tracks of the year, no doubt. in general I like the album, though.

"if "talkin to you" was an actual single, it'd be at the top"

fuck yes

continuing in the grand tradition of ethan's homoerotic lil wayne review, i am so glad my superiors actually used "the whirlwind of beef, [they] inhale it" as the cutline on the cover this week for the jay-z/nas article. (sorry if that means looking at the paper this week makes you want to vomit, al.)

violent j (sandboxhulkington), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 16:18 (seventeen years ago) link

if only i knew amon's real name...i would have asked them to look into buying his nas-with-burger picture like they bought sean carruther's nikolai-volkoff-with-vacuum cleaner.

violent j (sandboxhulkington), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 16:19 (seventeen years ago) link

seriously, every time i hear that line in the song now i crave that garlic bread they used to have at the wendy's superbar

violent j (sandboxhulkington), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 16:23 (seventeen years ago) link

haha I hadn't noticed that, awesome.

I think my favorite weird CP graphic lately has been that picture of the cat with thick marker Xing out its eyes that ran next to at least 2 different book reviews recently (both of which had plot points about cat murder).

Al (Alex In Baltimore), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 16:31 (seventeen years ago) link

sometimes i kinda want to quit my job and just photoshop nonsense for the paper all day

since I finally stopped adjusting my top 06 albums and committed to a 'final' list the other day, i should post the hip hop top 10 here before I start wanting to drastically change it again:

1. T.I. - King
3. The Roots - Game Theory
5. Birdman & Lil Wayne - Like Father, Like Son
6. Nas - Hip Hop Is Dead
8. Ray Cash - Cash On Delivery
11. Lupe Fiasco - Food & Liquor
12. Young Dro - Best Thang Smokin'
14. Styles P. - Time Is Money
17. Field Mob - Light Poles And Pine Trees
21. Rhymefest - Blue Collar

Al (Alex In Baltimore), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 16:44 (seventeen years ago) link

how is the whole ray cash album? (aside from being yr number 5.) i didn't even know "bumpin my music" was a rick rock beat until a few days ago.

violent j (sandboxhulkington), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 16:48 (seventeen years ago) link

it's really consistent in an unspectacular but enjoyable way. like a baby King.

Al (Alex In Baltimore), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 16:50 (seventeen years ago) link

"Payback" is great and the "Bumpin My Music" remix is one of the best songs I heard all year. I don't like the album as much as Al and I find it confusing that he's checking out crack fiends' 'tight ass jeans.'

deej (deej), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 16:52 (seventeen years ago) link

hah uh that is Ray Cash is checking out fiends, not Al.

deej (deej), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 16:53 (seventeen years ago) link

hhaha true, that song is weird, but the beat is great. i think it's just that i forgot about the album for a while, and then put it in the car a few weeks ago and realized that there's not a single wack song on it, which is hard to say about even some much better rap albums.

Al (Alex In Baltimore), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 16:56 (seventeen years ago) link

amon (amon), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 19:28 (seventeen years ago) link

so, small enough to inhale, I guess. his column's definitely a bit overly wacky but Funny Paper = G.O.A.T.

he's a good graphic designer and movie reviewer but freelancing for him is a waste of time. i hope they treat/pay their writers better.

now i'm imagining nas scraping ground beef into little lines and snorting them

The Reverend (Rodney J. Greene), Thursday, 15 February 2007 04:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Is there anything new that's good in hip-hop right now? I'm not being rhetorical, but it's been a while since I've heard anything.

Shadowcat (A-Ron Hubbard), Thursday, 15 February 2007 05:21 (seventeen years ago) link

TVT's Hyphy Hitz comp is really good. A few odd singles I've been into: UGK "The Game Belongs to Me"; Trick Daddy "Tuck Ya Ice"; Mike Jones "Mr. Jones"; Wes Fif "Haters Everywhere".

The Reverend shines like a lighthouse (Rodney J. Greene), Thursday, 15 February 2007 05:36 (seventeen years ago) link

That UGK song is really great.

31g (31g), Thursday, 15 February 2007 06:29 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah it seems like after the glut of 4th quarter releases, there's barely been a single major label or high profile rap release in the first couple months of 2007. mostly people dropping singles and mixtapes to gear up for albums in March or later. i'm kind of using the lull to dig back into older shit. this thread was way better than the rolling snap thread on the real ILM though.

no way - rabin-bashing >>>>>>>> perpetua-bashing

and what (ooo), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:26 (seventeen years ago) link

i had a dream about a new mike jones video featuring kanye in an mf doom-style mask. wtf??

violent j (sandboxhulkington), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:33 (seventeen years ago) link

it started out sampling some children's song but then went into the lil jon beat from the heineken commercial.

violent j (sandboxhulkington), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:33 (seventeen years ago) link

actually it only covered half of kanye's face, so i guess it was more like mfantom of the opera.

violent j (sandboxhulkington), Thursday, 15 February 2007 15:35 (seventeen years ago) link

i also missed amon's "beef" upthread

One of These Things (Is Not Like The Others)
Words and Music by Joe Raposo and Jon Stone

One of these things is not like the others,
One of these things just doesn't belong,
Can you tell which thing is not like the others
By the time I finish my song?

and what (ooo), Thursday, 15 February 2007 16:54 (seventeen years ago) link

As do Nas & Kanye. As much as I hate to say it, KRS sounds like an asshat.
