"Who cares about defense from a 1B as long as you aren't Ortiz or Piazza over there."

$ to donuts, Shea plays more DH than either of those positions. Also why even go with Shea? Rob Quinlan'll put up just as mediocre stats for you.

"Matthews had the 8th best road OPS among starting major league centerfielders."

He's also had one year where he's played that well. The Angels (are) aren't paying for what he did last year. They are paying for what he does the next FIVE. Also how many of those guys are going to make $11/year anyway?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 21:46 (seventeen years ago) link

He's also had one year where he's played that well.

Yes, we've covered that.

Michael (Oakland Mike), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 21:49 (seventeen years ago) link

Alex do you realize that if not for being overpaid by the Angels, Matthews would have been overpaid by the Giants? :D

Michael (Oakland Mike), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 21:49 (seventeen years ago) link

Haha actually I'm glad that Matthews is being overpaid by the Angels (might keep 'em from making a move that'll actually hurt the A's.) I think you mistake me for Steve or Lee though. I could care less that the Giants suck (or would be overpaying for another ancient soon-to-be-has-been.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 21:53 (seventeen years ago) link

I think you mistake me for Steve or Lee though.

Oh yeah, I forgot that you are like me in that you live in the area but don't have terrible taste in baseball teams!

HI I HAVE SEASON TICKETS TO THE A'S AND MY BOSS' BOSS USED TO OWN THEM YOU DOLT(s).

btw, biggest offseason move so far: the motherkrukker going on nutrisystem and getting below his playing weight.

seriously...have you seen that guy lately?

j.q. higgins, Thursday, 28 December 2006 13:56 (seventeen years ago) link

That's terrible, he'll be less amusing to look at with MUTE on.

Texas gives Borat & Zito a weekend ultimatum, ie they're out.

Dr M (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 28 December 2006 14:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Giants give Zito seven-year, $126 million deal.

Michael (Oakland Mike), Thursday, 28 December 2006 18:04 (seventeen years ago) link

and a 2014 option for $18 million

jergins (jergins), Thursday, 28 December 2006 18:49 (seventeen years ago) link

That's a good park for Barry. I could see him being worth close to that value for most of this deal.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 28 December 2006 19:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Unfortunately for the A's it's a bad deal, because we don't get a 1st round pick out of this. :(

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 28 December 2006 19:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Barry is going to be much more valuable in the NL, in my opinion.

Michael (Oakland Mike), Thursday, 28 December 2006 19:44 (seventeen years ago) link

I can't believe the Giants had to outbid the Mets by TWO years and $51m actually.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 28 December 2006 19:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Well at least Barry doesn't have to move, I know where his condo is.

sheeeeit

Dr M (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 28 December 2006 20:22 (seventeen years ago) link

On the one hand, I think Barry Zito is one of the most likable players in baseball, even in spite of all of his John Mayer/Dave Matthewsness. On the other hand, that's a lot of money!

Michael (Oakland Mike), Thursday, 28 December 2006 20:41 (seventeen years ago) link

bit of a right-wing nut to be likable.

milo (milo), Thursday, 28 December 2006 20:50 (seventeen years ago) link

bit of a right-wing nut to be likable.

I don't really know anything about his politics. He's allegedly one of the smarter players in baseball, and is one of the most respected among the union reps.

Michael (Oakland Mike), Thursday, 28 December 2006 20:55 (seventeen years ago) link

"bit of a right-wing nut to be likable."

Is he really? I had no idea although with ballplayers it usually safe to assume they are.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 28 December 2006 20:57 (seventeen years ago) link

His favorite movie is Happiness, directed by Todd Solondz.

Michael (Oakland Mike), Thursday, 28 December 2006 20:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Haha he can't be that much of a right-wing nut then.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 28 December 2006 21:14 (seventeen years ago) link

A just plain go-go-ga-ga crazy nut he def. is though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 28 December 2006 21:14 (seventeen years ago) link

on the ballplayer scale he is practically a Trotskyite

Dr M (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 28 December 2006 21:35 (seventeen years ago) link

I saw a short interview with him (maybe last spring training) about his love of Fox News and the damned dirty liberals always tearing President Bush down, etc.. Not like he was praising Mussolini and David Duke or anything.

milo (milo), Thursday, 28 December 2006 21:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Haha really? Are you sure he wasn't joking? Barry's a weird guy.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 28 December 2006 21:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Maybe it was sarcasm, but given young/white/rich/athlete I took him at his word.

milo (milo), Thursday, 28 December 2006 21:43 (seventeen years ago) link

He practices zen buddhism and loves nofx, which doesn't preclude him from being a republican by any means, but makes it a lot less likely. Also, he collects stuffed bears and sleeps on some velvet pillow or something that he brings on the road.

Michael (Oakland Mike), Thursday, 28 December 2006 21:56 (seventeen years ago) link

re: allegedly smart ballplayers

ha! is doug glanville retired? he was an engineering major from penn or somesuch and i know mussina has a degree (maybe masters?) in econ from stanford.

j.q. higgins, Thursday, 28 December 2006 22:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Apparently Milo is right:

Being a Republican is not the same thing as being ultra-conservative. The Padres used to have several John Birch Society guys on the team -- THOSE guys are ultra-conservative.

I mean, it's sad that he might be a Republican, but about 99% of baseball players are Republican.

Michael (Oakland Mike), Thursday, 28 December 2006 23:03 (seventeen years ago) link

Alyssa Milano sez he's a conservative Republican = good enough for me.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 28 December 2006 23:54 (seventeen years ago) link

I see no shades of gray between right-wing nut and Republican!

milo (milo), Friday, 29 December 2006 03:53 (seventeen years ago) link

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 29 December 2006 08:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Zito lived in the Marina district for a couple of years while he played for the A's; he was in Alamo last year and now he's thinking about living in coastal Marin County.

Alamo! Maybe he was auditioning to be a backup guitarist in Green Day.

And now he's thinking about Bolinas... what a match!

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Saturday, 30 December 2006 16:08 (seventeen years ago) link

hey, nobody sez he's smarter than Doug Glanville. But I'd never seen any poli comments before. ah well. Hope his uni pants are tailored the same way.

Maybe this should go in the dumbass thread though it's more depressing than dumbassed and tangentially related to this year's cash-flinging offseason: Strib's Patrick Reusse sez no way in Hell Santana's a Twin past '08.

f. scott baio (natepatrin), Saturday, 30 December 2006 20:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 30 December 2006 22:52 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't see why you should be depressed, Nate. It sounds like the Twins (as usual) have cornered a ridiculous amount of solid young arms.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 30 December 2006 22:56 (seventeen years ago) link

OK, we could lose the best pitcher the franchise has had since Walter Johnson, but on the other hand, there's a dude from the same country with a similar name who's 6'3" 158 pounds and did OK in Single A! Celebrate good times come on!
